“Bound to intoxicate.” — Eloisa James
Love blooms unexpectedly when an American arrival to Regency London becomes a pawn in a bet between two ne’er-do-well aristocrats. For Austenites with a yen for a hero who is humbled into good sense and a heroine who learns to value sensibility. — Kirkus Reviews
“...a fun and flirty Regency-set romance that beautifully showcases this author’s flair for writing wickedly witty dialogue and crafting superbly sexy love stories. — Booklist (starred review)
“Rodale’s witty, romantic third Keeping Up with the Cavendishes novel spices up Regency England... Romance readers weary of insta-love stories will glory in the slow, eminently believable development of physical and emotional intimacy between Claire and Fox. Rodale expertly blends sensuality and genuine admiration in this superb romance. — Publishers Weekly (starred review)

- Reviewed in the United States on November 28, 2017Although I first looked sideways at the pairing of Claire and Lord Fox, they ended up being my favorite pairing of the three first in the series, and that’s hard to do when Alistair Finlay-Jones is in the group, and for the sake of all that’s Austen: the first book has Lord Darcy. This is a very strong series.
Lord Fox was not at all the type of hero I thought I’d enjoy but Claire is one of my very favorite types (brainy, no-nonsense, honest). Because she fell in love with him for all the right reasons, I fell in love with him, too. Completely. He is everything good. He is all heart (and let’s be honest: I’ll take the rest of his body as well, thank you). He defends what is right. He says what he means. He also makes up multiple names for Claire’s Royal Society of People Who Remain Awake While Discussing Numbers. Fox is the epitome of a good guy without being obnoxiously so. Claire also has many estimable traits, especially in the way she cares for her family as the eldest sister. The Cavendishes, at the end of the day, are a family that cares about each other. Claire puts her siblings before her and leads them gently in a way that is not annoying but instead is admirable in that older sibling way.
Fox is exactly the sort of man Claire needs: one who supports her pursuits, even if he doesn’t understand them well enough to pursue them himself. For so long, she thought she’d only find happiness if she married another math genius, because who else could possibly love her? But all she needs is someone who loves and respects her for exactly who she is and whom she can love and respect in return. There is much to love and to respect about Fox. I was so happy to see Claire and Fox both together in their a happy ending. Sometimes, a story just works. It was a wonderful experience.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 31, 2017Somehow, I had gotten the impression that Lord Fox would be akin to Henry Higgins and that Lady Claire Cavendish would parallel Eliza Doolittle in Pygmalion/My Fair Lady. In fact, Lord Fox does make a wager that he can turn her into a lady acceptable to the haute ton. However, he does not have Lady Claire's cooperation, nor is she even aware that he hopes to change her.
Claire, one of three American sisters suddenly thrust upon British society when their brother unexpectedly inherits a dukedom, is quite happy the way she is and doesn't care much whether or not she fits into British high society. While she wears fashionable clothing (thanks to her aunt rather than her own preference), there's always something slightly askew. She wears spectacles and keeps her hair pulled back severely into a rigid bun. Her conversation in company is also odd, as she insists upon bringing up subjects that interest her but are shocking (for a woman) among her new peers. Rather than polite topics of conversation, she is disconcertingly forthright.
Her passion is mathematics and science. She is eager to meet the Duke of Ashbrooke and would love to visit the Royal Society, of which he is a leading member, to discuss and ask questions about the difference engine he has pioneered. As far as Claire is concerned, the chance to meet him is the only advantage of her new social position.
Lord Fox is quite the contrast. He loves competition and always wins, whether it's boxing or horse racing or wooing the ladies. He's a handsome, charming hunk of man, a loveable rake, and he enjoys being a darling of the ton. Heavy thinking? Not so much.
No one is more surprised than Claire when Fox singles her out at social events. They're clearly a mismatched couple, and his pursuit of her is a mathematical problem to her that just doesn't compute.
I do enjoy this author's light, playful writing style. Fox has various amusing names for the intellectual group Claire is enamoured with (such as Royal Society of X = Boredom) and suffers from an excess of Male Pride, which is frequently alluded to. There are also clever overlaps with the stories in the previous two books in this series involving the antics of Claire's sisters, Bridget and Amelia. Claire, as the eldest, is distressed to find that her own concerns have distracted her from protecting them as she believes she should. In all these books, my favorite scenes are invariably when all the siblings are together, teasing each other, getting on each other's nerves as only close-knit families can do.
As much as I enjoyed the story, the characters, the humor, and the writing, I wasn't as pleased with the resolution.
**SPOILER ALERT**
Once Claire learned about the wager, I didn't find her logical mind working all that logically when she decided to win it for him. It would seem that a better way to test Fox's true feelings would be after he'd LOST rather than helping him win. Either that, or the bet could've been called off if Lord Mowbray and Lady Arabella Vaughn were happily paired and Mowbray lost the desire to best his friend elsewhere. I didn't like Claire pretending to be something that she wasn't any more than Fox did!
**END OF SPOILER**
I think the first two books had much better conclusions.
Still, it was entertaining, and I'm glad I read it. I look forward to the next in this series, It's Hard Out Here for a Duke: Keeping up with the Cavendishes. This aptly named book is about James Cavendish, the girls' brother, the new Duke of Durham.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 15, 2017I have been enjoying this series from the beginning and the third installment lived up to my expectations. Ms. Rodale can always be counted on to deliver a good story with well rounded characters. Hero Fox has been jilted by his fiancé and his male pride is bruised. Looking to give his self esteem a boost and remind everyone that he is the darling of the aristocracy he makes a bet with his friend that he can turn any woman into the most popular woman in society. Friend chooses Lady Claire, a brilliant mathematician who pushes gentleman away with her intelligence and is looking for a meeting of the minds in her mate. I won't spoil the story for you, but even as she knows they don't fit she finds she likes him despite his inferior intelligence. A highly good read and an interesting Regency twist on the movie She's All That.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 28, 2016I love Maya Rodale, but while I enjoyed this book I don't think it was her best. I think her characters always have amazing chemistry. But the hero and heroine in my opinion were kind of a mismatch. I was excited to read this story, I always look forward to the excerpt of the new story from the previous book and I thought it was going to be better than it was. I think I was kind of disappointed how weak the hero was. He had no substance to him. I just find it hard to believe how she portrayed the hero that a girl like the heroine would fall in love with him. Not saying that it wasn't a good read, it was just okay. It didn't stand up to all her other books. I think Maya has spoiled me with how romantic all her other books are and this one just didn't do it for me.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 27, 2018It was pretty good. Probably my least favorite of the three, but I’m glad I bought it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Needed real humor
A bit of a let down from the previous novels of the series - the most interesting part of this story is that it is the fictional story as perceived by Rodale of the real Countess of Lovelace who was the first computer programmer with Babbage. Why Claire could not be wittier and not so stodgy I don't know but with all the mathematical content in this story it did need humorous scenes to balance the heaviness. I also thought that Fox was made out to be a fool - maybe this was supposed to be the humor but it was overdone and not believable to the character

4.0 out of 5 stars Pygmalionvariante

This book was such fun to read - a modern rom-com Historical rather than a traditional read. Several laugh out loud moments and lots of amusing scenes kept me entertained right the way through. I loved that Lord Fox was not the sharpest knife in the drawer (very brave for an author to do this) Fox and Lady Claire were an excellent match with great chemistry in my opinion. The epilogue rounded off the story perfectly.
This is the third book of the series and all three stories are so beautifully woven together that you can read all as stand alones, but they are very much enhanced if read in order. I'm looking forward to James's story. 5 stars.
