You should try the Red Velvet recipe it is to die for!!
Great bargain, easy to use great quality
I couldn't wait I went ahead and mixed up the cake mix I had in the cabinet figuring I was going to burn the first few batches based on prior reviews. I figured once I got it down pat I would break out the big guns and make a scratch cake mix to actually dip and put on sticks.
However I was pleasantly surprised I only had a single mishap. I over filled the first time and it looked like Saturn cloned itself and was attached to every clone. Because I used a boxed mix of devils food cake which is airy and fluffy. When in a cake pop machine and cake bakes it expands so you really need to pay attention and fill the bottoms up almost all the way full as if the tops need a bit of space to nestle in leave a smidge of space between batter and the top. It is going to be one of those fine line situations.
I honestly would take suggestion from prior reviews and say use a pipping bag and tip so you have more control of the batter flow into the little wells. I would go as far as to say that if they put a reusable piping bag as an accessory even a higher cost it would be worth it to not loose any batches of cake balls when in a sprint to make 300 of them 12 at a time. ( I was afraid to trust one of those floppy silicone molds for cake pops and the old fashioned way seems gross with what has been going on health wise in the world) This was the perfect solution for my needs. I am sure I will be using it for a while to come.
The tiny prongs are almost perfect for pulling the cake pops out I don't know if its user error or they just aren't wide enough but I keep stabbing my cake balls with them instead of them either rolling up on to the prongs or being put between the two prongs like a little glove. I would suggest instead putting in a melon ball shaped scooper 1 1/4 inches so you can gently caress the pops out of the machine with out harpooning them like you are spear fishing.
The cake pop stand came in handy it holds 12 pops at one time. I would however say I think it would be a better value for you to put in the 3 tier one that screws together its made out of clear plastic and it it a flat surface with holes in it for the pop sticks. They are about 6.99 on Amazon and hold about 30 cake pops total which would be pretty close to the whole cake mix if controlled dispensing is possible. . I think if you added the little changes I mentioned you could easily charge $55 or $60 USD for this "bundle"
Anyway long story longer I suggest buying one of these for anyone who loves making cake pops. Just don't forget to order some bags to wrap your cake pops in. I got 100 clear bags and some cute colored polka dot bows on Amazon for $5.99 USD as a set with sticks.
I am sure these will be a hit at my Bingo game on the weekend. I will edit and add photos of my first batch which I affectionately call the cake flops.
Thanks for reading hope this was helpful and you bought one to try out yourself.
E~
I followed the chocolate cake recipe provided in the brochure that comes with the unit. The book suggested that you use a piping bag to fill each cavity with approximately 1 tbsp of batter. I used a spoon instead of a piping bag to fill each hole which was very messy. Next time I'll try the bag.
Next I experimented with cooking times. The first time around, I oiled each cavity pretty well with vegetable oil. I cooked the first batch for 3 minutes, opened it up and turned each over as people had suggested and then closed it up and cooked for an additional 2 minutes. They came out a little hard and on the drier side. After experimenting with different timing I found, for me, cooking them for 2 1/2 min first, flipping them over and then an additional 1 1/2 min worked out perfectly. It might depend on the type of batter you use so you'll have to experiment.
For the most part that cake balls came out perfectly. They cook in just a matter of minutes and cool down very quickly. I am going to freeze half of them for later use. The batch I made according to the package instructions made almost three dozen balls.
Pros:
Easy to use
Makes consistent size balls.
Cooks in just minutes.
Balls are all cake instead of half cake and half frosting as with the handmaid balls.
Cons:
Balls are a little small. One bite for adults and 2 bites (maybe) for kids.
Clean up would be easier if the plates were removable.
I hope this helps anyone who is trying to decide whether they should buy one of these or not.
