i was a bit worried since rating was low but it seem to be because people dont read the product description before purchasing, this product does not come with maps but you can mark way points onto a blank map to find your spots next time you hit the lake.
for the price it is probably the best unit you can get, my next one will be the 7sv for sure!
I think this is the best inexpensive sonar in the market for a couple of reasons.
1. It has a dedicated BACK button. With the cheaper Lowrance units going back a screen or two is not an intuitive process - it bugs the heck out of me to no end.
2. The GPS seems to be a little more sensitive than the Lowrance units. This is super important to me. As a newbie sonar user, i think the toughest thing to do is *stay* on a certain structure or a school of fish. With my Lowrance, I'd spend a lot of time paddling around in circles and semi-circles because the GPS wasn't sensitive enough to detect small movements. The Garmin is better at that. On top of that, the Garmin has one feature that i find super useful. It has a compass tape on top. You can use the compass tape to navigate to, or stay on, a spot, while devoting 90% of your screen to the sonar function. I love that feature.
The 5" screen give *just* enough real estate to use the map/sonar functions side by side.
In terms of the actual sonar function, it seems to be on par with the like-priced Lowrance units - they're both good. I'd have to give the build quality nod to Lowrance though - they just seem a bit more robust. I also don't like how Lowrance plays games with their models - some have GPS, and some don't. IMO, a fish finder w/o GPS is virtually useless.
The *one* feature that's lacking is that there is no easy way to move data like waypoints back and forth between these units and your computer. I like using Google Earth to pre-plan a trip, and right now, it's a tedious process whereby I have to hand-input coordinates into the Garmin. I almost dinged a star for this, and I would have if the unit didn't do the other things so well.
All in all, I'd take the Garmin over the Lowrance units.
