Exceeded all my expectations
I am not super computer savvy, so it took a few tries to get it connected to my wifi. Once connected however, it's performance is amazing it's color and intensity can be totally controlled I was able to duplicate my traditional incandesant lights exactly ! Next came connecting them to the Amazon echo device which was a fairly straightforward affair took about 20 minutes for the first bulb, about five minutes for the second bulb

Doing research on smart bulbs, I originally was gonna go with WeMo or Phillips Hue but I ran across LiFX and decided to go with these because you didn't need a bridge or a something to connect to your router. It seemed simpler.

After I received the bulb, it didn't connect right away, it took about 3 times but still it wasn't a big deal. It was about a total time of 3 minutes for it to connect. The bulb is awesome, I like the option of themes and shades that are available. The cool thing is scheduling when I want it to come on and turning it off without getting up. The future is Here!

Here's the problem though, the app only works some of the time. They never stay connected, at least once a day its gonna say bulb offline. When it does you have to turn it off manually then flick the switch back on which defeats the purpose of having smart bulbs. So basically, I have a $40 sort of smart bulb. Maybe that's why the other bulbs come with a bridge. Since, I just ordered one bulb to test it out, I might go with another brand or just kill this experiment altogether.

Update:

After a week of going in and out, I did contact support by email. Then a day or two without I guess they updated them and now they and the app work like They're supposed too. I'll give them 5 stars now.

Bought it for a gradual sunrise wake-up alarm, and it works perfectly for that purpose. The packaging is very well done and the bulb feels quality made. Easy to set up, and the app is very simple to use. It is larger than a standard bulb, so may not fit some fixtures, which is the only reason I'm deducting 1 star. I submitted an enhancement request to allow fading from one color to another, and received a prompt response that the feature is in beta test, so impressed with the support. Overall highly recommended.

Update: Bulb worked fine for 2 weeks, then one day the auto turn off timer didn't turn it off. Two days later the auto turn on timer didn't work, and it had lost wifi connectivity. Went through all the troubleshooting steps, numerous times, and it won't connect to the network. Just too unreliable and flaky to keep.

I've always hated the 2700k color temperature of incandescent lights and the 3000k of halogen was only a slight step up. On the other side of home lighting was the blue and cold temperature of florescent lighting. I've always wanted something in between but it simply didn't exist. Not only that, I've always wanted a light bulb that would allow me to change the color temperature. During the day when daylight is coming into the home is when the 2700k color temperature of incandescent lighting seems most offensive to me and that's when I prefer a higher color temperature of 5500k but at night I prefer something closer to 3500-4000k. For something warmer, like a candlelight dinner, a 2700k color temperature is appropriate. When I'm reading, I prefer 4500k.

A light bulb that gave me this type of control was all a distant dream before LED bulbs like the Philips Hue bulbs broke into the scene. The Hue bulbs though, seem too expensive to me and too dim as well. The Hue bulbs have the added benefit of not only being able to change their color temperature but also their colors. That's a neat feature but more of a neat trick than something that's actually useful. Lifx also makes a color changing bulb that doesn't require you to buyer a starter pack with a hub and 3 bulbs like the Philips Hue's but those are still too expensive for simply being light bulbs.

What I really wanted was a light bulb that was cheaper and brighter than the Philips Hue or the original Lifx bulb and that's exactly what we have here with the Lifx White 800.

In a way, it's the light bulb of my dreams but its not perfect. There is an added complexity to them because of the smart features and if you are using iOS (iPhones and iPads) then you should be fine. The iOS application is mostly solid. Occasionally I have to manually turn the light bulbs on and off to get them to respond to the app but mostly they update and work flawlessly.

If you are on Android though, you may find these bulbs frustrating to use. The app for it is half baked and although I have updated the bulbs through my iPhone 6, my Nexus 7 tablet continues to ask me to update the bulbs but fails each time I try. Then the bulbs become unresponsive to the app and I have to turn the bulbs on and off again to have them respond. This happens on iOS too but its very infrequent, on Android I feel like more often they don't work.

It seems to me that Android has a large user base so I would hope that Lifx would work harder to take care of this demographic, they are only hurting themselves by getting Android users a half baked app but that seems to be the case for a lot of Android apps when compared to their iOS varients, but I digress.

I love these bulbs but I do have a couple of wishes.

1. I'd like a physical remote. Using my phone to control the lights works well but I'd like a physical remote to control them. Call me a Luddite but in a day and age where we can't get away from looking at LCD screens, I'd like to have something tangible to control the lights. Yes you can still turn the lights on and off from your wall switches and these lights do retain the brightness and color temperature you had set them too, but I'd like to do all of this through a physical remote control.

2. Please list the CRI of these light bulbs. CRI is a basic lighting statistic but it's mysteriously missing from the specification sheet. I'm guessing the CRI of these light bulbs is low and that's why Lifx has left it out. I've looked at a number of objects and comic books under the lighting of these bulbs and I have no complaints about the quality of light. That may just be me though. I am sensitive to the color temperature of lighting but I may not be as sensitive to color accuracy.

Overall these light bulbs are excellent but Android users may want to stay away unless you'll be happy with setting the light bulbs brightness and color temperature and sticking to a wall switch to control them with only the occasional change up. I should also note that while I have not had any issues with the size of the bulbs, they are much larger than regular A19 bulbs so fixtures with tighter spacing will not accommodate these bulbs.

Works fine. Huge hassle to set up with Alexa. A sponsored link on Amazon brought me to puchase it. The set up instructions are so bad, and the website lacks detailed steps to get it set up with Alexa. Alexa app skills rating for the LIFX skill was around 2 1/2 stars. So here's fix, hopefully save someone a headache. Screw in blub, turn on light, download LIFX app. Run LIFX app and create login and password. Then select wifi (supposed to be same as Alexa is on), it'll find device then send wifi configuration to it. (If it configures for over 5min just close app and reopen should be done)* then in app you will see the light all set up and be able to turn it on and off. All easy stuff. Then goto Alexa app download skill LIFX and login to your account.
What happens next is your supposed to have Alexa discover the device, tho she wont. It won't happen. Then you'll spend way to much time trying to find the answer, and think about returning blub. (Like alot of comments)If you do figure it out you'll want to write a review like this one.

(Website instructions no help, at all, just makes vague reference to make sure linked to cloud. They actually have a How to set up a cloud link, which just tells you to create an account, not how to link a bulb to cloud. They also keep referencing the word Cloud and your LIFX Account, interchanging, as in the same term.)

****So fix is, in the LIFX app, little > next to your blub. Click it then at very top of screen to left of the little star is a symbol. Click symbol and then tell it to link to cloud. Then it'll ask you to create name. Once that's done Alexa now can find the device. Please let me know if this helped. Had to rant little, just wasn't clear cut instructions.
