The actual painting process was exhausting (it's a very thick paint once you add the powder so you have to put a lot of elbow grease into the painting) but the results were fantastic! The wall came out beautiful with 2 coats and it's easy to clean with a damp soft cloth. My only big complaints are that chalk markers tend to not work well because they bleed into every tiny imperfection in the wall surface but that's not likely the result of the powder or paint so much as the wall. Just something I felt worth noting to folks who plan to use this the same way we did.
Overall, I'm really happy I picked this powder. It's economical, worked well, and comes in a size that is a good match for a single gallon of paint project. Would really recommend it!
I lightly went over the painted surface with steel wool which removed the sheen and distressed it with fine grit sandpaper; then I applied Minwax clear furniture wax to seal it. My first attempt at chalk paint and I am happy with the results. The 5 lb bag will last a very long time and make lots of different color chalk paints.
I painted a picture frame using left-over pale green flat wall paint and tinted it with black fluid acrylic craft paint to create a sea weathered gray paint. Then used the above formula to paint it. I did not use steel wool on the frame. It looks awesome!
.
The whole idea is to get an even layer that is opaque and thick after it dries. I mix in paint and depending on the material I will add a small amount of school glue to the mix. Especially if I am going to use chalk pastel. The glue provides a surface that will take pastels if you time it right. Then when then when I am satisfied with the mixed media I put several layers of clear acrylic gloss to seal it all in after a couple days of curing. Just don't use glue if you plan on using color pencil. That was a big mistake I made on a recent piece. Also do several experimental mixes. The baby powder to chalk ratio is a little tricky at first.
I've tried other calcium carbonate brands, and I have many half used bags laying around. That's because none of them compete with this one! This 5lb bag lasts me months! And I paint 5-7 days a week.
You'll need any paint, latex (these are mostly your wall paints) or acrylic (these are mostly your craft paints), a mixing cup, a spoon, an 8 ounce container (or larger/smaller depending on your needs, just adjust accordingly), 3-4 tablespoons of calcium carbonate (add more/less depending on your preference on how chalky you want your paint), and HOT water.
Pour your paint into the 8 ounce container. Measure out approximately 3-4 tablespoons of calcium carbonate and add it into your empty mixing cup. Then, slowly add HOT (as hot as the tap allows) water until you make a thick pancake like batter. If you prefer a runny paint, add a bit more hot water. I prefer thick paints since I mist my surface as I paint to avoid brush strokes. Stir the mixture until the calcium carbonate has completely absorbed, takes about 30-45 seconds. Then add the mixture to your paint, mix well. Now you have a perfect chalk like paint that can pass for any big name brand! Happy painting 🖌
