This is not a product for those who are not technically minded. You do need to be able to read a wiring diagram and find the correct wires to connect the unit correctly.
The process is not too difficult if you just want the remote starter function, but become more involved if you want the other features. This is because the wires required for the remote starter function are mainly found just below the steering wheel and come from the harness that goes to the starter switch. You will have to remove the knee panel on the driver's side to access the wiring. You do also have to wire in a remote disable switch under the hood, which means either finding a way to run a wire through the engine compartment bulkhead, or drilling a hole through it. You can also run the Tach wire through the bulkhead, or just use the automatic tach function as I did.
You also have to connect a wire to the brake switch, usually found at the top of the brake pedal, or you can trace wires back to the fuse panels, which can be a bit trickier.
Allow several hours to do the online research for your vehicle's wiring and for making sure that you have the correct wires. I strip off about a 1/2 inch of the wire's insulation and then poke the new wire from the controller through the strands, twist them together before soldering them and finally protecting the joint with some thick plastic tube (you can slit the tube and then bend it backward to open the cut and slip it over the wire)and then use insulation tape as extra protection. The extra precautions are important as these wire carry a lot of current and you don't want any bare wires touching. You probably already know to disconnect the battery wires when doing this to disable the air bags. Check the details for my vehicle before doing any work.
The wiring gets a bit more tricky when you have to trace wires for the rear screen defogger, locks lights and the other extras. You will probably end up removing lots of panels to get at the wires. Good luck!
I used to swear by Haynes manuals with their once excellent photo sequences to show everything, but now I swear at them as the manuals now show a few generic photos and don't have the same details anymore. You can find all the wiring info, and also possibly a YouTube video online which may be more helpful and free.
I really like this unit for its range. It transmits much further an any other unit I've fitted over the years, and works well from inside my house and workplace.
The hard part in fitting any remote is tracing the wires and making the connections. If you are a DIY mechanic and know your way around and electrical circuit you probably will not have too much trouble fitting this unit but allow plenty of time and be patient.
If you aren't a practical person with some wiring skills then go to a professional and have them install one of their remote starters, as blowing up your car's electrical system or setting it on fire will ruin your day.
Pros: 1. The system works very well, I haven't really had any flaws since wiring this system up to my father's truck. It does what it's suppose to do, Lock/unlock and remote start. 2. The range the remote reaches 300ft, the antenna that comes with the product works very well also.
Cons: 1. The remote seems a little bit cheap but for $40 your getting a good deal overall. The instructions from Avital (DEI electronics) are a bit confusing but it's just another reason why most people do end up going to a car alarm dealer to have one installed instead of doing it themselves. 2. Depending on how you install the system yourself if you have to install your own door lock relays there is a 1 second delay between lock and unlocking the vehicle. 3. After shutting down the vehicle in remote start mode I have notice I have to wait for 2 to 3 seconds before I can lock the doors because the vehicle will not lock right away, I don't know if it's because of the door lock relays I created or the device itself. 4. Wish this system comes with a 2 way remote so it can page and let you know if the vehicle successfully remote starts or not.
Overall my father is very happy with this install. Of course it doesn't provide the full 100% comfort of feeling like a factory alarm system since like any aftermarket car alarm/remote start system it does have it's hiccups from time to time. Even the viper 5706v installed on my charger does have a hiccup once in a blue moon. I think I'm just so proud of myself for installing one of these for the first time by myself and save alot of money. If you want something simple that provides you with lock/unlock and remote start rather you drive a 1972 TransAm or a 2011 Dodge Ram without any of these features by all means this is something you should invest in.
On to the actual operation of this thing. I have tested this up to 600 feet away from my second story office window without any issues; that being said, I opted to install the antenna on the front windshield above my mirror. I have not had any other opportunities to test the range on this yet. The lock/unlock feature is simple and works well (I just need to get used to it since my factory FOB doesn't work when the car is running). Being a one way system, as long as I can see my car, I can still tell if it started or not as my parking lights and daytime running light come on.
I would NOT recommend installing this yourself if you: 1) are NOT comfortable tapping into your cars wiring (especially ignition wires). 2) Have limited or no experience with electronics. 3) Do not own a decent multimeter or 4) are not comfortable with tearing apart your car. The only prior experience I had was installing a few car radios and being able to read some simple wiring schematics.
