Product Description

In the River, players struggle to create the best pioneer settlement out of a new, uninhabited world. In order to best your opponents, you must construct valuable buildings and cultivate your River banks into harmonious and productive settlements. Expand your territory, conserve resources, and block your competitors from victory along the way. Every decision counts in this fast, streamlined tile-and-worker and placement game. As an added challenge, as you progress in the game, Your workers will periodically settle down and stop working for you, so your pool will get smaller and the decisions tighter. Very accessible and uidly thematic, the River is an elegantly smooth game packing a strategic punch for the whole family. Fans of Days of Wonder and the worker placement genre alike are sure to love this brand-new title from the award-winning Studio.

The River

The River transports players to a rich land full of possibilities as they attempt to survive and thrive, building the best settlement in the new world to earn the highest score.

Every player must manage their River board as they explore this new world and claim terrain, collect resources, including food, buildings, and new settlers, and earn bonus tokens.

Managing Terrain tiles on your River board is key to producing and storing the right resources along with scoring Victory Points at the end of the game based on matching tiles in the River boards columns.

Producing resources is important to expanding your new settlement along the river; however, you must ensure you have the facilities to store your goods, or they’ll go to waste.

Entry Level Euro Game, Challenging without being Onerous
Summary: In "the River," players accumulate victory points through building buildings and clever land placement. It is a game for two to four players and takes about 40 minutes to play an entire game from set-up to victory. Each turn, a player has several choices of actions to take ranging from collecting resources, to ensuring he is the "next" first player, to building buildings, and swapping land tiles to increase their scoring. There are a lot of nice touches in the game including the each building built scores less points to the beautiful artwork and top production values for the componentsOn to the Dr Games’ Criteria …GO/NO GO Criterion• Complexity: (GO) The River is not super complex, but you will want to spend a little time going through the rules. The basic moves are straightforward, collect resources, build buildings, etc, but there is some added chrome to remember, such as if you preposition a building then it costs one less of any attribute you choose to build.• Balanced: (GO ) Everyone has equal chances to win.• Chance (GO) There is some card counting that is useful, and understanding how many resources are left and what the impact would be are also helpful. That said, there is a fair amount of chance in what cards will come up, and they can make the difference in scoring strategies.• Clarity: (GO) The rules are nice and well written, but you need to play through the game a couple of times to get everything down• Reasonable Time: (GO) You can complete a whole game in 40 minutes.Bonus Criteria• Social: Unlike other Euro games that allow you to either directly challenge or to indirectly "block" another player, the River is relatively friendly. You cannot objectively help another player, but it is hard to hurt another either.• Unique/Interesting Mechanics: The anti-hording, first to build gets the most points, is a brilliant addition to play.• Informed: No so much.• Rewards Throughout: As you build buildings you gain victory points that cannot be taken away. The final reward comes at the end.All in all this is a fun game for the whole family.
