"How fast can you play?"
"What guitar do you have?"
"Who is better, Eddie Van Halen or Steve Vai?"
For metal fans in the 80s, these were common and important questions. Tune in to MTV, pick up a magazine, or walk into an instrument store, and more often than not you'd be exposed to what is now known as shredding - the fast, virtuoso soloing popularized by musicians like Vai and Van Halen, Joe Satriani and Yngwie Malmsteen, Randy Rhoads and Dimebag Darrell. Inspired by these pioneering guitarists, thousands of young musicians would spend hours at home in their bedrooms, perfecting both their playing and their poses.
Though shredding fell out of favor during the grunge/alternative rock era, it has become increasingly popular again in recent years, spurred by the rise in popularity of bands like Children Of Bodom, DragonForce, and Trivium. Drawing on more than 70 exclusive interviews with key shredders past and present, author and guitarist Greg Prato has assembled the definitive guide to the fastest players of them all.

Review

Prato shreds it (sorry!) on this stellar oral history of shredders. --Vintage Guitar Magazine

An amazingly comprehensive look at the lineage of some of the greatest guitarists of all time in their own words. I greatly enjoyed the format and stories from the wide range of players represented.
--Eddie Trunk, Trunk Nation SiriusXM Radio

Prato's already worked out the magic of getting oral history right with his definitive grunge book,
Grunge is Dead. Now tackling guitar shred, artfully covering the main hub and then all the spokes that make the wheel go round and round, Prato talks to all the luminaries--this is serious interview snagging here--and lays down the somewhat obscure and challenging story with great flow and lots of humor from the speakers, shredders and those who have to deal with them (like Graham Bonnet). What results is a weighty academic work, an erstwhile history of heavy metal, really, but manna from heaven if you are a guitar player. Forewords and afterwords by Alex Lifeson and Uli Jon Roth underscore the substance Prato has laid down here. --Martin Popoff, book author/journalist

I love this book! I personally know many of the guitarists featured, but I'm also a huge fan of their work. I've never read a book about famous guitarists and how other famous guitarists view them. I was captivated from beginning to end. This is a "must read" for anyone that loves the guitar and really a "must read" for anyone that loves music. I highly recommend this book!
--Michael Angelo Batio (Nitro guitarist, solo artist)

Told by the guitars players themselves, this book gives personal insight into what makes them who they are, and how they got there. Guitarists talking about the guitarists that made an impact and gave inspiration. I'm so proud to be included in this book.
--Ron "Bumblefoot" Thal, solo artist & Guns N' Roses guitarist (2006-2014)

I vividly recall devouring magazines like Guitar Player back in the late '80s and early '90s...reading this book evoked a lot of memories from that time, but with one significant difference: back in the day, these kind of insights into other players' approaches and perspectives would trickle out in tantalizing monthly installments, whereas Greg's book facilitates a more voracious approach. Reading it felt rather reminiscent of being able to "binge" on the whole boxed set of a TV series, rather than having to wait for each new episode to air. A fascinating read, if this kind of guitar playing is your metaphorical "cup of tea."
--Guthrie Govan (The Aristocrats, Asia, GPS, & solo guitarist) If you base your decision on whether or not to buy and read thisfascinating book simply by what Michael Angelo Batio, Ron "Bumblefoot"Thal and Guthrie Govan have so eloquently said....you couldn't besteered onto a better course! The only thing that I could add is thatthis book could also serve as a sort of "bread crumb" path for the upand coming new guitarists to be led into a way of thinking, that couldvery well put them in a position to be in the next book like this in the future...if you read closely! Greg Prato is not only a great writer, and I am also honored to call him friend, but the way his mind works inputting this together the way he did, can only enrich any guitarplayer's knowledge and nudge them closer to where they want tobe...simply by the written word! --Craig Goldy (Dio, Dio Disciples, Dream Child guitarist)

Greg steers the ship and lets the truth do the talking. With
Shredders!: The Oral History Of Speed Guitar (And More), same result - Alex Lifeson (who wrote the foreword) gets you preparedfor the journey...then fasten your seat belt to the land of guitaraerobics. A MUST FOR ANY FAN OF SPEED GUITAR HEROES!!! --Keith Roth, Ozzy's Boneyard & Electric Ballroom

Although this is not a short book, music fans and guitar enthusiasts will find themselves engrossed and not able to put this book down. Prato never disappoints.
--Screamer Magazine

Greg Prato covers the history of shredding from its early days (the most influential early shredder cited as Eddie Van Halen) through to the current day. The oral history style of the book means that each chapter subject (e.g. Steve Vai, special effects, Shrapnel Records, etc.) has related quotes and anecdotes along with views from musicians and journalists. Edited well in this book, this format is entertaining and provides a fascinating view of guitarists talking about their peers
--Fireworks Magazine

What's particularly cool about this book, is it that you feel likeyou're traveling back in time to the dawn of shred during your reading. On topof that, you don't need to know who all the players are to beengaged.Shredders are a 5/5 book. A super fun read that I recommend to any andmusic fans!
--All That Shreds Website

A deep dive look at some of the best lead axemen (and women) of hard rock and heavy metal,
Shredders!: The Oral History of Speed Guitar (And More) is as fun of a read as it is highly informative. --No Echo ("2017 Holiday Gift Guide: Hardcore, Punk + Metal Books" selection)

This is a great book about a relatively underappreciated era of unsurpassed musicianship. The author does a fantastic job of categorizing those groundbreaking musicians and uncovering the stories behind their success. A must read for 80's era rock guitarists and fans of the genre. This is, quite frankly, a book that needed to be written to fully bring to light the paradigm-shifting artists of the day, many who are still making great music. Well done!!

The first time I read a book "written" by Greg Prato, I thought that the guy is either clever or lazy. He basically gets a cast of musicians and other music-industry-related people together, and then asks them questions or presents topics. Greg then puts their replies together in a book. But when I think about it, I often don't care about the author's opinions and just want to read what my favorite musicians have to say, especially if the author is not very knowledgeable and/or does not seem to care for the artist/band they are writing about. As a guitarist who started playing in 1983 this book is right up my alley! I loved reading what some of my favorite guitarists had to say about shredding, Shrapnel Records, guitar magazines & tablature, and many more topics. The book is almost 400 hundred pages so it is a bargain and a good read. There are also some cool pictures. The only thing I did not like about the book is that there are a few guitarists that I'm not interested in, but that is to be expected. Anyways, it is worth getting, 4 1/2 stars!!!!

I am still reading this book and really enjoying it! I am 72 and discovered speed guitar/shredding through a friend, who has been immersed in metal music for the past 40 years - writing songs, singing, shredding himself, when he was performing! I am so fascinated and excited by this music genre and am inspired to learn to play electric guitar myself. This is a wonderful book containing many interviews with the Guitar Gods, who made music history and shredding an art form!

Just a bunch of disjointed interviews bound together into a book. Some fun anecdotes, and some fun stories, but lacked some cohesion.

This book is outstanding!!! Brought me back to the days when metal ruled. Could not put this book down and especially loved the section where the artists themselves talk about their gear. Great book for players and fans alike. Now I must check out other books from this author. I see he has many!

Having been a fan of this writers previous oral skills I found this presentation to be drop to your knees worthy. The writer clearly has a skill in getting each shredder to show there full package. None of the interviewees seem shy in opening up and letting it all hang out which definitely shows how comfortable they are with Prato's no nonsense ability to let them be as open with him as they want to be. All in Prato has again shown every other schlock just how rock hard his taste for the perfect oral history can go. Buy this but beware, Prato will soon have you shredding down to pure rock status.

Imagine being in a queue three hours before the doors open at either a G3 or a Malmsteen gig. Imagine also that your gig buddies in that queue are the likes of say, Mike Varney (Shrapnel Records founder), Jason Becker, Steve Stevens, Vinnie Moore, Jennifer Batten and Jas Obrecht (Guitar Player magazine editor). What would you be talking about to kill time? Shred of course! This is exactly what "Shredders!: The Oral History of Speed Guitar" feels like: a conversation among like-minded people passionate about an esoteric subject of which you happen to be a silent witness.

"Shredding" in musical circles refers to the ability to play an instrument, in this case, the guitar, at high speed and with surgical precision. This is the general consensus albeit playing fast all the time is not a prerequisite.

In Greg Prato's distinctive "writing" style, he has collated interviews from an impressive and diverse array of guitar players, bass players, guitar magazine editors and columnists on the subject at hand. The interviews have been spliced and organised by chapters to flow into one coherent whole that covers the whole spectrum of the Shred world.

The book delves in depth and in considerable detail on the subject by looking at Rock and Metal in the pre-Shred era; dissecting the works of the trail blazers (Eddie Van Halen, Randy Rhoads, Yngwie Malmsteen, etc) and standard bearers (Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, etc) of Shred; analysing various techniques and methods of practice; discussing guitar magazines, tabs, tools of the trade, instructional videos and stores that have been instrumental in the growth of the Shred movement. Notable institutions such as Shrapnel Records, the home of Shred, Guitar Institute of Technology (GIT) and North American Music Merchants (NAMM) are all discussed at length.

Finally, Greg Prato wraps it up by looking at the end of the movement, how it has survived in the modern day and queries stand out guitar players of various eras about their own favourite compositions.

"Shredders!: The Oral History of Speed Guitar" is an engrossing book that will appeal to guitar players, pique the interest of fans of the genre and enlighten music history buffs.

The only shortcoming of this compendium is the lack of a non exhaustive nomenclature of recommended albums to listen to. Whilst this might end up being a subjective exercise, it would at least provide the uninitiated a starting point. To attend to this oversight, I have included, in no particular order, my own list of favourite Shred albums below:

- Van Halen - I
- Ozzy Osbourne - Blizzard Of Ozz (and Diary Of A Madman)
- Yngwie Malmsteen - Rising Force
- Vinnie Vincent Invasion - S/T (and All Systems Go)
