My second go-round, I worked with 1 inch slices. That was completely manageable. I didn't have any problems with it hardening too quickly, or with the rest of the stick hardening while it's sat there, etc. I cut the rusty parts off of an outdoor patio chair, and then used a cleaned threaded steel dowel to set the chair at the right height and give me something to build around. I worked in thin layers. It worked absolutely perfectly. It adhered to itself very well, and I did not have any problems with an adhering to the pipe for the patio chair, or to the threaded dowel. To repeat myself, though, I did degrease the threaded dowel first.
My only complaint would be that I could not get it smooth. I tried, but little bits would stick to my nitrile gloves. I tried using a plastic fondant smoother I found on clearance, and it stuck to that too. It would be helpful if the company put on the package what materials might work as a non-stick tool for smoothing it. Because this way, I had to build it up bigger than what it needed to be, causing me to need more of the product then I would have had to have used, and then now I will have to grind it down to smooth. But overall, I'm grateful that this product exists, that it's so inexpensive, and that it's so easy to work with.

Setting time was quicker than anticipated as I had over worked the putty on first try.
Second try was perfect, excellent bond to hinge, and overpainted now, everything seems sound.
