High-spirited high jinks on Christmas Eve put Frank Cross (Bill Murray) in a ghostly time warp in this hilarious take-off of Charles Dickens’ 'A Christmas Carol.' Cross, who has made the meteoric rise from the depths of the mailroom to TV network president, is mean, nasty, uncaring, unforgiving and has a sadistic sense of humor - perfect qualities for a modern-day Scrooge. Before the night is over, he’ll be visited by a maniacal New York cab driver from the past, a present-day fairy who’s into pratfalls and, finally, a ghoulish, seven-foot headless messenger from the future.

'Scrooged' delivers pretty much exactly what you'd want from a late 80s Bill Murray-starring, Richard Donner-directed, Danny Elfman-scored modern (80s) PG-13 re-staging of 'A Christmas Carol.' It's endlessly amusing and avoids the sappiness of most Christmas fare without becoming an out and out anti-holiday movie.
If there's an issue with the movie it's that the end suddenly has Murray going for broke in a bravura, stunningly sincere monologue that's not really supported by the movie that preceded it. It's a great moment that actually primes us to enjoy the following group singalong closeout completely unironically, but the character's transition isn't terribly convincing, and so your reaction is more "where did that come from?" when it could've been "wow this is brilliant" if they'd managed to nail the set up.
Another side effect of realizing the movie's going for more weight in the end than it indicated beforehand is that it has you going back and re-evaluating other character bits, namely Murray's relationship with Karen Allen's character. They never make a convincing couple, but that doesn't feel like a problem until you see the end actually try to legit hit you in the feels. Still, I admire the attempt and I think it makes it a more interesting movie than if they hadn't gone for it.
I gotta mention Alfre Woodard, who finds just the right register to play Murray's secretary. She's got a spine and isn't at all afraid to let her boss know how she feels, but she's dutiful enough that they still have an oddly functional working relationship. Now that reminds me another thing missing from the end: we really ought to have seen Murray finally give her the bonus and raise she deserves! We can assume he's going to, but come on, she's right there, they missed such an easy crowd-pleasing moment.
By the way, the 4K UHD release finally has the special features (including a commentary by Richard Donner) that were originally planned for the mysteriously cancelled "Yule Love It Edition" DVD from 2006 see the light of day. It's been 15+ years, but I guess like Karen Allen says, "it's never too late!"
