First off the install was a breeze, 2 screws and your done. The instructions made me laugh a bit when it suggested using my hands to bend the rubber butt pad. This thing is pretty thick and solid rubber there's no way I could bend it any noticeable amount. I did place one end on the floor and used some leverage to bend it just enough.
I haven't been able to shoot with it yet so I can't comment on the actual main function. It does add length and feels a little more comfortable holding it now.
The butt pad fit pretty well on my rifle, it certainly isn't 100% though. Knowing how old and how quick they must have pumped these rifles out they are all not going to be a direct copy of each other. The small differences across these rifles would make it impossible to get a perfect match for an add on part. That being said the fitment issues are very minor and could be solved by sanding or trimming the rubber pad a little bit. The fitment wasn't enough for me to knock a star off however, that's how minor it is.
For a range test, I put 20 rounds of 202 grain soft point rounds through it, 10 rounds of 192 grain heavy ball FMJ, and 10 rounds of 150 grain FMJ through it. I noticed the reduction in recoil against my shoulder instantly, it felt more like I was firing a .308. Obviously changing the contact point from a steel plate to a rubber plate would help, but I was very impressed. Usually after 20 rounds of 7.62x54r I end up with a bruised shoulder, using this rubber recoil pad I had no discomfort.
I myself didn't have an issue with the recoil from an M44 before using this, but every time I go out to the range with some friends or family they always refuse to fire my M44 after the first round because of the recoil. So I bought it more for them than myself, but given how much more comfortable it is to fire, I'm starting to like it too. Biggest advantage of that is now the people I go shooting with can use my cheap 7.62x54r ammunition instead of the more expensive stuff.
However, other reviewers have stated that this pad is too hard to really absorb the recoil, while others found it acceptable. After inspecting it, I saw the pad has 6 holes on each side of the recoil pad, but they do not go all the way through. This leaves a solid rubber spine down the middle of the pad. So using a drill and bit that matched the hole size, I drilled 4 of the 6 holes all the way through.
The only reason I didn't drill all 6 was because one of the holes near the bottom is also where the screw that holds the pad on goes through, which means if I messed up and removed too much rubber it could possibly break loose. Not wanting to risk that I left that hole undrilled, and in the interest of aesthetics I left one near the top undrilled so it would look uniform.
I took the rifle out today, and I can honestly say the recoil pad performed very well. Say what you will, but I was in pain after just a few rounds from this rifle before; I shot several rounds from this pad today and now it's just a nice push instead of a sharp kick. I did not fire the rifle with the recoil pad BEFORE drilling it, so I'm not sure how much my modification helped, but I think from simply pushing on it with my hands it definitely is absorbing more energy.
It only takes a few minutes to drill the holes out, just have a nice place to do it since all the hard rubber bit make quite the mess. I included a few (bad) pics above so you can see what I did.
Hopefully this will work for you as well, and make shooting this wonderful rifle a pain-free joy again :)
