Product Description
ZWave motion sensor compatible with SmartThings
Every Z-Wave smart home depends on data for truly intelligent automation; automation that makes a smart home actually smart, responsive, and secure. TriSensor provides your smart home with its 3 most essential pieces of intelligence.
3 different sensors are crafted into TriSensor’s impossibly small finish. A Motion Sensor to monitor a room’s occupancy, a temperature sensor to manage its environment, and a light intensity sensor to manage connected lighting.
3 sensors.
1.77 inches small.
Motion Sensor, Temperature Sensor, Light Sensor.

Motion Sensor.Useful as a Z-Wave automation or security sensor, TriSensor detects motion with accuracy up to 23 feet – 40% bigger than its nearest competitors. |
Temperature Sensor.Automate your home’s heating and cooling; read real-time temperatures in rooms between 14~122°F with accuracy of ±1°C. |
Light Sensor.Automate your home’s lights; read and analyse how bright lights are in a room between 0 to 30000 LUX with ±3% accuracy. |
Perfect scene trigger.
TriSensor is one of the best sensors that helps trigger your home automation scenes with other devices.
Walking in a room and lights up when it’s dark, works with your thermo controller to keep your room neither cold or hot, keep your house safe when unexpected intruder comes.
Highest level of security.
TriSensor is Z-Wave’s only 3-in-1 sensor to offer the very best level of security: S2. Making it perfect as a security and alarm sensor, S2 means that TriSensor has anti-hacking features including AES-128 bit encryption and ECDH key exchange. TriSensor and S2 keeps your home smart and secure.
TriSensor’s Z-Wave Plus and S2 features also a 50% reduction in wireless power-consumption versus older Z-Wave devices and a wireless range up to 67% greater.
Easy setup and flexible installation.
At only 1.77 inches in size and weighing only 50 grams, TriSensor is really small. That means it can be placed almost anywhere in your home. TriSensor offers 4 different installation possibilities: in a corner, as a shelf sensor, as a beam sensor, or recessed in a ceiling cavity with Aeotec’s Recessor (available separately).
ZWave hub required
TriSensor uses Z-Wave Plus to communicate wirelessly. That means you'll need a Z-Wave hub to use it.
Visit aeotec.com/z-wave-gateways/compatibility.html to find out which hubs TriSensor works with. Some software and gateways which SmartThings is compatible with include Aeotec AutoPilot, Aeotec Smart Home Hub, Fibaro, HomeSeer, SmartThings, and Vera.

Customers like the size of the motion detector device. They mention it's small and fits in the same reservoir as the Multisensor 6 uses. That said, some complain about the quality, saying it'll be unreliable and of low quality. They also dislike the battery life, and disagree on compatibility, performance, motion detection, temperature reading, and ease of installation.

The unit's light sensor is helpful because it means you are only triggering the room lights to turn on when it is actually dark. SmartThings lets you include this parameter when programming the action to turn on the lights.
With SmartThings, you can also program the room light(s) to turn off when motion is not detected for a period of time. This motion sensor is accurate enough to handle it.
It has a noticeable green light in the upper-right corner of the front face that flashes when it detects motion. It is noticeable and brighter than typical. According to the documentation and some forums, you can access the customization parameters to disable the green light and adjust a few other parameters. I didn't dive that deep. These options aren't on the surface in SmartThings and require more advanced knowledge.
Of course, you can use this motion sensor as a trigger for all sorts of things. I'm just using it for my Hue lights.
I'm not using the temperature sensor but it does work.
Overall, I am satisfied with this sensor. It reliably picks up motion and the light sensor makes it perfect for my application. I am getting no false triggers. Plus, it's small. The only downside is the green light on motion. It's a little bright. Minor.

Overall I'm pleased with the purchase, and it mostly works as expected. I dropped off a star because it doesn't always register, so I wind up having to wave my arms around like a lunatic trying to get it to trigger in a dark room. That's only once in a great while, but it's frustrating when it occurs.
The setup was a pain with a Zstick as you need to follow special instructions in the manual available online from the mfg. Those instructions were not in the printed guide.
The sensor never stopped working even as temperatures reached -28°F. The battery that came with the product appears to be low quality, and the battery level dropped like a rock in the cold weather. I suspect a higher quality battery will fare better in the cold weather.
UPDATE 1 year later:
Still going strong on original batteries (i've disabled the LED, that'll massively and quickly drain your battery). It has been very consistent. I use it to turn some dim lights on in my bedroom when I head to bed and it is very consistent at reporting motion and then reporting no motion to turn the lights back off. I wish it had humidity sensing capabilities. I bought this for ~45 USD last year and I dont think the 70$ price tag is appropriate. I would definitely buy it again but it's definitely not 70$ worth of hardware or technology. 45$ was already a _bit_ pricey for what you get but I think 70$ (as of the time of writing this) is unreasonable.
Top reviews from other countries
Motion is detected over a fair distance with fairly large movements, and reported instantly. The online manual says range is 7 metres but the marketing claim is 9.5 metres, however, there is no statement of field of view, which I'd estimate at about 120°. Around 30 seconds later (with no motion) the state reverts.
Temperature and light is reported as accurately as needed but it is not clear how often it reports those in. The temperature sensor is within the product and is very slow to respond, to the point that it seems stuck. The light sensor can report quickly, but doesn't. There doesn't seem to be a fixed schedule to readings. Sometimes, the SmartThings app says the sensor isn't connected but then it suddenly corrects itself. It seems to read often enough for my automation, but I'd rather know how it works to ensure my schemes are robust.
It seems that every time it updates to the hub, a green LED flashes. This may be useful but it is bright. Fortunately, it is brief, but it is a bit distracting at night (I am using mine as a presence sensor in my living room to activate lights when things get dim).
The battery is a rather large CR123A lithium 3V. This seems a foolish decision as that same battery size also comes as alkaline 1.5V. It won't work with the latter. Also, there is nothing to prevent someone inserting the battery the wrong way around other than some none-too-distinct polarity marks moulded in the plastic.
The instruction manual makes a complete hash of the pairing procedure. It tells you to replace the rear of the product after pulling the battery tab but then says you need a five digit number that is printed on the inside of the rear cover. It also requires you to push a button that is not labeled and is hidden next to the battery.
The rear cover does not come away from the product smoothly and is awkward to replace.
This is a functional product, but Aeotec really should have put more effort into describing it better.
When it works, I like that it provides the room illumination.
