Precious Remedies Against Satan's Devices (Puritan Paperbacks) Paperback – June 1, 1968
Brooks lists seven reasons for writing this book. The first reason is enough...Brooks says, Satan hath a greater influence upon men, and higher advantages over them than they think he hath, and the knowledge of his high advantage is the highway to disappoint him, and to render the soul strong in resisting, and happy in conquering.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 24, 2013From all the Puritan literature I have read, this work stands at the top of the list. Brooks is so vivid, so practical, so focused on Scripture and the challenges of the Christian life in a sinful world, his words are pure gold. As a side benefit, reading this also teaches us how to outline and develop a logical argument.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 25, 2018This is certainly a remedy for warding off the attacks of the enemy. I refer to it often. It gives one a good perspective and insight of how clever he is and knows just how to discourage and tempt us. Praise God for Thomas Brooks.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 14, 2012This book is very concise and offers to-the-point reasons for why a believer should avoid sin, and then gives tangible examples of how that is to be done, according to the Bible. If you love the depth of insight that the Puritans had into the Bible, then you will love this book. Written in 16th Century language, like the King James Bible. Very encouraging!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 2, 2011I am a lover of the Puritans! Having done my doctoral work on a Puritan, I am very familiar with their writings. This particular version of "Precious Remedies Against Satan's Devices" by Thomas Brooks, is a great blessing. The difficult words, no longer or rarely used today, and some of the archaic sentence structure have been modernized without removing the beautiful prose and original flavor of author. This particular Kindle version is much more accessible to readers who find it difficult to read Elizabethan English. Thomas Brooks, along with Thomas Watson, are the two most readable puritans and this particular version makes Brooks even more accessible to readers today. The puritans were students of their own hearts and they wrote out of their own self examination. Brooks knows how to apply God's Word in a clear, direct, and encouraging way. I highly recommend this book for anyone wanting to grow in Christ likeness!

5.0 out of 5 stars A rare look into the devices of the enemy, and the solution to resist temptation.
After a season of backsliding, my close friend recommended this book to me.
It was so informative, and everything I was ignorant of I started to see so clearly. It's like Mr. Brooks understood in a way similar to Paul in Ephesians 6, an understanding of war. This book has helped me a lot to be more observant and to see what lies ahead before I get to it.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 30, 2015The writing is a style from a much earlier period which takes a while to pick up. But it is extremely well organized and methodical and all points are backed up by scriptural references. I plan on re-reading. It can be a good tool for real change. Already using a few of the arguments to preach to myself.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 25, 2012Regarding the content of this book, I agree with those who have given it five stars. The reason I have rated the Kindle ebook version at three stars is because of the lack of an active table of contents provided. But rather than not purchasing this item based on that reason, I think (as I have suggested previously with other ebooks with that same problem) in its initial reading a reader could establish a table of contents with locations in a computer spread-sheet to facilitate later readings of this material. The content is worth the extra effort to do that.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 31, 2019I am sure I will be blessed by this classic, but don't waste your money on adding the audiobook. This is the first time I was disappointed with audible. They should have warned the buyer that it is one of those stupid computer generated voices. Absolutely irritating to listen to which makes it completely useless.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is one of the best books I've ever read
This book will bring peace to the disquieted conscience and water to the wellsprings of your soul. You could probably read it many times and still find hidden gems of carefully guided thought patterns to soothe the troubled mind.

5.0 out of 5 stars A comprehensible manual in living a victorious life in Christ
The book comes with its own recommendation from the person who wrote the brief biography on Thomas Brooks to open the book: "His reputation as a writer of treaties for the heart has never been clouded. His literary style is always lively. Like many of his contemporaries he drew his sermon-illustrations from the Scriptures themselves, from everyday life, and from ancient classical literature and history. The amalgam is invariably interesting and edifying." (p.II) This observation I can testify as an authentic reflection of the writer and this book.
But this is a serious matter that the author is dealing with. He opens the book with the statement of his motivation: "I shall leave this book with you as a legacy of my dearest love, desiring the Lord to make it a far greater and sweeter legacy than all those carnal legacies that are left by the high and mighty ones of the earth to their nearest and dearest relations...My desire to you are, that you would make it your business to study Christ, his word, your own hearts, Satan's plots, and eternity, more than ever;... For a close, remember this, that your life is short, your duties many, your assistance great, and your reward sure; therefore faint not, hold on and hold up, in ways of well-doing, and heaven shall make amends for all." (p. 18-20) Interestingly Brooks notes "The strange opposition that I met with from Satan, in the study of this following discourse". This intensified his resolve to write this treatise so as "to shake and break his kingdom of darkness, and to lift up the kingdom and glory of the Lord Jesus Christ, in the souls and lives of the children of men." (p.17)
From these, one can sense the urgency and sincerity in this treaties, something that the Puritans never fail to convey in their writings, according to my experience. This book is not the easiest to read because it is jam-packed with truths in the most intense form. It is not a book that you skimp through but go through at a steady pace over a period of time. It is one of those books that should be digested slowly rather than read speedily. There is a lot in there to reflect and contemplate. Brooks himself observes that "It is not he that reads most, but he that meditates most, that will prove the choicest, sweetest, wisest and strongest Christian." (p.21)
The subject matter I find very helpful. Brooks notes that one of his motivations in writing this book was because it had not be attempted before. In that kind of depth and comprehensiveness, I will not be surprised that this still holds true. What is the application for us? Battling sins is daily struggle for Christian. Christ's victory does not feel like reality in our life. We often feel lost, hurt, disabled, perplexed, and trapped in situations, and Christ cannot be more distant and irrelevant. Now, this book is a comfort for two things: (1) Satan's plots and devices are exhaustive! It can be numbered and counted through. (2) There are remedies - and they make up the longer list than the former! We are on the winning side!! "Being forewarned is being forearmed." If we have thought through Satan's schemes in advance, the remedies do follow. Our Christian walk should be more effective and profitable for Christ's sake. But the challenge is: do we have the diligence and devotion as the Puritans to heed to and to act on these remedies? I feel we are used to life at peacetime and economic boom time that we don't know much of working hard. We expect food to be served to us on a plate, and we lose the hunting skills. Life is so convenient and comfortable (especially more and more are available and accomplished at the click of buttons!) that we become less and less resourceful and resilient. Passivity and inertia are what modern day trends we are fighting. But Brooks says, "Christ, the Scripture, your own hearts, and Satan's devices, are the four prime things that should be first and most studied and searched. If any cast off the study of these, they cannot be safe here, nor happy hereafter." (p.15) In the advanced countries, most people are literate, but are we reading and what are we reading? That is what makes a difference between defeat and victory. It is not that we don't know the winning formula, but whether we will seize it and obey. How do we overcome our wilful ignorance? "An ignorant heart is an evil heart." (p. 211) "Ignorance is the mother of destruction." (p.212) "Ignorance is a sin that leads to all sins." (p.212) It is a moral issue.
"A man may lawfully sell his house, land and jewels, but truth is a jewel that exceeds all price, and must not be sold; it is our heritage: 'Thy testimonies have I taken as an heritage for ever' (Ps 119:111). It is a legacy that our forefathers have bought with their bloods, which should make us willing to lay down anything, and to lay out anything, that we may, with the wise merchant in the Gospel (Matt 13:45), purchase this precious pearl, which is more worth than heaven and earth, and which will make a man live happily, die comfortably, and reign eternally." (p. 21) May the counsel not fall on deaf ears, but spur us on to cherish and possess this treasure and pass it on faithfully.
