I bought a back up carbinator canister at Staples before my little one ran out. They assured me that they would take the small one in exchange when I was finished with it. But now they're out of stock. Fortunately, we have a local kitchen shop that also told me they would take the small one in exchange. Today, they did just that. They charge two dollars more than Staples, but the manager of the store is a SodaStream enthusiast, so I trust that they will have the canister in stock. Having a back up is a very good idea. Another good idea that I learned here in the reviews is to order extra bottles. Keeping one in the refrigerator with still cold water in it all the time assures that you will have the chilled water ready to carbinate when you need it.
I haven't used any of the flavors that came with my SodaStream. I like my sparkling water unflavored (except that often I use it for cocktails!) If I do decide to flavor some, I'll use one of the natural recipes that are easily available online. The flavoring packets that come with the machine have artificial ingredients, and I'm not into that.
I really haven't done the math to see if down the line, I'll be saving money with this. I suspect I will. But as an avid environmentalist, I appreciate the fact that I am no longer buying my seltzer in plastic bottles. Even though I was recycling them, I know it takes energy in the recycling process, and I don't know how many actually were recycled instead of adding to the endless plastic waste plaguing our planet. Also, the machine takes no electricity to operate. Only a few manual pushings of the button. Also, the seltzer I was buying at the store usually lost its fizzle within a day, and I was discarding it (although I was giving it to my houseplants, so I wasn't wasting water). The SodaStream seems to make just enough sparkling water for me to consume before it loses it's fizzle. A real winner for me.
All of the syrups that come in the starter pack, even the non-diet contain SUCROLOSE! Nowhere does it say that on the front of the packaging! It is only on the ingredients list. I do not drink diet drinks because of the artificial sweeteners so I figured I'd be good to go. SUCROLOSE is a diet drink ingredient! SodaStream should clearly mark this on the packaging!
The good news - There is a line of syrups called "naturals" and they have great flavors like ginger ale, lemon-lime and even a natural cola. These are made with real sugar and taste great!
Now for the machine! I have always wanted to get one of these but didn't think it was worth the cost. With all of the hype I decieded to buy one here on amazon and figured I'd go with a "starter" model.
Pros: It is light, easy to use, easy assembly.
Cons: It is big and takes up a lot of counter space, seems a bit flimsy and cheap plastic, 1/2 of the starter syrups are diet and the other half are sweetened with sucralose.
I had it put together in a few minutes including the small starter CO2. I chilled my water and made some lemon-lime from the starter pack and this is when I figured out it had artificial sweeteners in it. I was lucky because I had ordered the ginger ale from the natural line of syrups (all sugar) and it tasted awesome!
Hints to better soda: Chill your water but not over chilled. About 42-45 F is perfect to get the maximum carbonation. Add your syrup slowly and make sure you angle the bottle or it will fizz up and spill over. When you are carbonating the water give it an extra couple of pushes to get the perfect carbonation. Seal the bottle and refrigerate.
I also purchased a couple of extra 1 liter bottles so I could have items ready when I wanted them.
The starter CO2 is just a small amount (made 5 liters for me). Take this to a big box store to get the medium size or even the big one to keep CO2 for when you need it. Buy an extra CO2 so you can swap one out before you run out at home.
I think this is really worth the price. One of my biggest gripes has always been hauling the soda from the store to the car, from the car to inside the house, and then storing all of the 12 packs - then having to recycle all of the cans! I have a reverse osmosis water filtration system on my home water and this gives me perfect clean crisp water to start with. I'll still buy coke and pepsi from time to time, but this is now my everyday alternative.
