- Reviewed in the United States on September 19, 2018Wow, what a great story. I could not put it down. An archaeologist gets thrown into a life on the run after finding incriminating evidence on a major corporation. A veteran of the last war and a snarky AI ship help her escape but all is not as it seems as they search for the truth to bring down the tyranny of an all encompassing and murderous conglomerate.
Don't expect to be able to get anything else done once you start this, it's that good. Enjoy!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 18, 2020The storytelling and writing are well above average. I'd like to see more of this series, and he's clearly left it open for that.
That said, I really hope to see more character development in future stories. Many SF writers underestimate the importance of strong characters in favor of rebellions and space battles, forgetting that their characters are what drive all of that. Check out Sarah King's work to see how good characters take a good story to the next level. Looking forward to reading more of his stuff.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 28, 2020I do not recommend you buy this book and start reading it too late in the evening, or you will stay up far too late and not want to put it down. Now I have to go see if it is a series or not and get the others. I enjoyed it a lot, and if it is a series, look forward to seeing how they expand from here. I also wonder if the bots are more than they seem...yes it is worth reading it to understand that comment. 😃
- Reviewed in the United States on July 21, 2024If you like Mr. Martin's writing and want to read a science fiction space opera, this book has you covered.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 10, 2021Well written, interesting characters, good plot. Ships need better weapons. This story demands a sequel with a .itt.e more romance. The world has much potential.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 12, 2019I really loved the blurb and was looking forward to diving into a space adventure. I felt the writing was a bit stalled at some points and the ending felt rushed. With how long this book was you get hardly no information on the past of the two main characters. Alien hardware is noted but not many details. I just felt like this could have been a great book and was let down in the end.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good read
Read it on KU.
Really enjoyed this one. Unsung heroes on the wrong side unintentionally.
And big corporations full of dirty deeds.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great read.
Larry Martin did a great job on this space western feeling tale of corporate greed run amok. The hero is flawed and way too hard on himself while his female counterpart is stronger and smarter than him.
But they are better together than apart and are soon kicking butt and taking names.
A terrifically fun read and a good commentary on our future, rolled up in one big, scary, funny novel.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant Space Action.
First in a series, the story practically leaps off the pages. There’s plenty of battle action, multifaceted characters, and a budding relationship between two characters who are polar opposites. There are good guys and bad guys and lots of space, the Big Black. Makes me wish I could be there!

4.0 out of 5 stars Conspiracies, scrap yards and guns - in space! Yeah!
Great fun read. Lone salvage hunter saves the girl from corporate mercenaries on a lonely planet and they ride off across space pursued by baddies, team up with pirates whilst plunging deeper and deeper in to galactic wide corporate conspiracies, genocide and mayhem....what's not to like? Well, the typos. But that's the only bad bit.
Yes, I would have enjoyed another 200 pages to add to the depth of character and enrich some of the environments, but the action was all there.

5.0 out of 5 stars Top stuff
What a great read, good pace, likeable two main characters and a spread of quirky support individuals to make it interesting. Hopefully a second book soon!
