Happily consumed with her academic career, Professor Avery Wainwright never planned on becoming sole guardian of her octogenarian Aunt Birdie. Forced to move Birdie—and her failing memory—into her tiny apartment, Avery’s precariously balanced life loses its footing. Unearthed in the chaos is a stack of sixty-year-old letters. Written in 1951, the letters tell of a year Avery’s grandmother, Alma Jean, spent teaching in the Indian school system, in the high desert town of Winslow, Arizona. The letters are addressed to Birdie, who was teaching at the Phoenix Indian School. The ghostly yet familiar voices in the letters tell of a dark time in her grandmother’s life, a time no one has ever spoken of. Torn between caring for the old woman who cannot remember, and her very different memories of a grandmother no longer alive to explain, Avery searches for answers. But the scandal and loss she finds, the revelations about abuses, atrocities, and cover-ups at the Indian schools, threaten far more than she’s bargained for.

Real and Triumphant. A Great Arizona Writer!

Real and Triumphant. A Great Arizona Writer!
You can't drive down Indian School Road in Phoenix, Arizona without wondering about the name of that street. I've lived in Arizona for 25 years and the things I learned reading this book are at once, illuminating and heart breaking. Kelli Donley's prose puts you in the middle of poverty stricken America from the dusty farms of Nebraska to the cactus of Arizona. A story of two young women in different times, 1950's America and present day. Donley has a way of putting the reader in the moment. The more you read the more you'll feel for these characters and the hard lives, and harder truths they come to learn about a past few want to remember.

I rate this book as one of the two top readers I’ve read this year. So entertaining and not knowing what will happen next keeps u turning the pages. Can’t say enough about this book you must read.

I loved Kelli Donley's latest novel. The history lesson made me uncomfortable as an American's whose ancestors might possibly have been part of this atrocity somewhere in N Western Pennsylvania. Yet, the compassionate strength of those who recognized this and did their best, even while struggling themselves, gave me hope for humanity. I could easily see a connection to the atrocities today and wondered how I might find a way to help those in need. Thank you Kelli, for another great novel.

Counting Coup is set in the present time, but I was blown away by the particular slice of American history that's woven throughout. The treatment of the Native people is equal parts fascinating (because I have very little knowledge of the subject) and horrifying, especially considering how relatively recent the story is set in America's history. I also felt that the plotline involving the heartbreaking, complicated reality of caring for an elderly loved one suffering memory loss was portrayed very accurately. Overall, it's a page-turner that will leave you wishing you had a little more time with the characters you come to know so well.

Loved the book. Story was very engaging. I knew some history of the Phoenix Indian school, but this book has motivated me to learn more about this very sad history.

This is the author's third book and it is even more amazing than her first two novels. I literally could not put the book down. Well written and the story mingled with historical facts make the book an intriguing read. The author makes you feel as though you are experiencing the story yourself. You will not be disappointed!

The story and setting were good, but neither the characters not the plot were developed enough to earn more than 3 stars.

Another extremely compelling and beautifully written story from Kelli Donley. I’ve enjoyed all of her books, but this one especially was difficult to put down once I started it. Anyone who is from or has visited Arizona should read it for a new perspective on a little-discussed part of the state’s history. Five stars for sure!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book! As an Arizonan, and part of a family who fostered Native children, it hit close to home. I appreciated it as a good read and as a source of part of history that a lot more people need to be aware of.
