Ghosts are more than just stories for sixteen year old Lucy Vitalis and her paranormal investigator father. Ghosts are their livelihood. But when they move to small town Sterben, Kansas for a case, Lucy discovers that not everyone takes the undead as seriously as she does. What she finds instead are eccentric locals, the Ghost of William Shakespeare, and a dark secret that threatens to send the entire town into hell if she and her new friends can't stop it in time. It's a race for survival in this paranormal comedy featuring a colorful cast of characters exploring the powers of friendship, murder, and exploding ducks.

I know how to survive a ghost story!

I know how to survive a ghost story!
I can now confidently say that I should be able to survive a ghost story! This book was absolutely hilarious, and if you've ever lived in a small town, you will definitely relate to how realistic the crazy beliefs and society of Sterben, Kansas are. There are many details put into How to Survive a Ghost Story that make it so special. For example, each chapter starts with a quirky survival tip that's almost reminiscent of Zombieland, and there's even an appearance from the ghost of Shakespeare himself. The characters are outrageous and loveable, and you find yourself rooting for them despite their flaws. I loved all the hidden references and found myself eager to figure out what hijinks the crew was going to get into next. If you're a fan of mystery and comedy, do yourself a favor and read this book!

4.0 out of 5 stars Paranormal Comedy Indeed!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 2, 2020
This indeed was a paranormal comedy and though I very rarely even look at these genres, I'm glad I did here because this book really did deliver on what it promised.

The plot was interesting, certainly the aspect of having many ghosts in one town, half of which you'd never expect to be here. Choosing the ghosts, and the ones that appeared, was very well done and I appreciated the choices made - *cough* William Shakespeare *cough*. Although I would say the plot took a few chapters to really get going.

For characters, they were all diverse in nature. I could follow every character as if they were real people. Lucy was blunt and a little obnoxious, which was brilliant! You don't see a lot of MC's being those "harsh" qualities when they're actually really real to have. Her friendships built slowly as she wasn't the overall type to make many friends - for her it was quality over quantity - but when she made them, they were genuine and well put together. You could feel the trust while also the learning between the new characters on how to be friends still.

The comedy was simple but that's all it needed to be. You don't need over-the-top systems here. My favourite little jokes were definitely the one about "ducking" and "ducks" - if you know, you know - and then the names of the people in the town. Classic humour.

Ending wise, it was very simple and it was nice to see smart characters finding loop-holes in systems! I appreciated that no one was silly or came up with overly complicated ways of doing things. Loop-holes for the win! Smart characters for even more of a win!

But also speaking of endings, THAT ENDING! It was almost open-ended. The book could close but there were also more questions left, new ones at that. The story was concluded but also a little mystery lingered.

Bonus: The chapter titles were GENIUS!

WOW!

Okay, so I know Maddie (the author) a little (twitter and Instagram friends via our love for books) and I bought her book as soon as it came out. Like literally the same day. And I do not regret it one single bit!

This story is brilliant. I'm a huge fan of supernatural genres of anything (books, movies, TV shows). And this book was superb.

It was written brilliantly and would shock me right up to the last line of the book. I'm literally on edge to find out if there will be a sequel or if this is one of a kind. Either way, I'm a happy book worm right now!

You should absolutely read this book if you're into supernatural, ghost stories which will keep you on the edge of your seat.

Maddie, I absolutely loved it! Well done doll, so proud of you :)
