    Works great with Linux
This was practically plug and play with Linux (Ubuntu). I use gqrx software, which is fairly user friendly. Right away I was able to pick up ATC, police, and fire. On the second day I decided to try to pick up NOAA satellites, I was able to get the downlink from NOAA 15 and NOAA 19, I saved the wav file and used noaa-apt software to decode the wav file and get an image of the earth with cloud cover. If you plan to do this, you can use gpredict software on Linux to track satellite, alternatively you can use the orbtrack website.Make sure you look into how to use the dipole antenna. You can use omnicalculator website to calculate the length of each leg, for instance to tune the antenna to 137 MHz, each antenna needs to be 20.4” long. Also the antenna needs to be oriented correctly, it should be vertical with the coaxial part facing up for local signals. I took a few pictures to show the splitter with the cover removed, you can see that the coax cable goes to the left, I marked that side with some electrical tape, so I can easily see that that antenna needs to be facing up. When trying to pick up satellite downlink, the antenna should be horizontal and bent to 120 degrees (V shape). If you want an easy and strong signal to try to pick up in the US, I would recommend the NWS broadcast which can be found at 162.400.000 MHz in the narrow FM mode.Bottom line, this is an insane amount of fun for the price, and isn’t too difficult to figure out. Other reviewers mentioned that there are plenty of tutorials online, but I didn’t end up using them. With Linux there were no driver issues that others seem to have experienced with windows. Here is the shell command to install SDR software in Linux:sudo apt install rtl-sdr gqrx-sdrThen reboot and with the SDR plugged in, use this shell command to make sure it works:rtl_test -tThen run the gqrx software and under device select the Realtek option.I have only had this for 2 days and have figured out quite a bit in that amount of time. Any tech type person would definitely enjoy it as a gift! Make sure you get this brand though!!If this review has been helpful please click yes! Good luck!

Managed to pick up HF on the 10 6 & 2 meter bands as well as shortwave and some strange show on MW hosted by two women who were playing songs about aliens and talking about Area 51. Luckily I happened to have 10 meters of 24 awg stainless steel 430 laying around so I wrapped this around my centre dipole and ran it from the house outside and all the way along my washing line. So I managed to get some good reception, great fun I can’t wait to built a 1-30mhz HF antenna then I should be able to listen to some interesting stuff. Just to mention the heat issues around this dongle when I was playing around with FM and tuning in some local radio stations my dongle did get quite warm although after I attached the wire to my centre dipole, ran it outside and switched to HF there was no noticeable heat generated after this? In fact the unit kept quite cool. To get the HF bands check out the v3 user guide it’s linked at the bottom of the quick start guide and all the info like enabling the Q Band and attaching a wire to your dipole is there. I’m looking forward to building a 9:1 unun which should be with me tomorrow, thanks Amazon I’ll get my soldering iron out ready. Build quality is also great and this is very much a genuine RTl-SDR it’s also very easy to use although I can imagine this hobby could become very addictive. So don’t expect to stop your purchase at this kit which is great value as you get quite a bit of stuff for your money. As mentioned though you will soon be on the hunt for an upgraded antenna, depending on what you want to do with your new SDR that is. I would definitely recommend this product as a start and am going to have another play with it as soon as I’ve finished this review. Have fun.
