Build -
The phone has a glass front (Gorilla Glass 3), and although it's 2 gens behind in regards to Gorilla Glass, I haven't had any scratches appear on the front while it's been in my pocket with keys, etc. It also features a fingerprint scanner on the front. The back is a textured plastic that helps with grip compared to most newer phones that use a metal body. I'm fairly confident that the phone will survive minor drops, although I'm not too concerned due to the price of the phone compared to most flagships. I also appreciate that the back is removable and the battery can be replaced. You don't need a sim ejector tool for a sim tray, as the sim card goes directly into a slot under the removable back. It also features a micro-sd slot for expandable storage. I am unsure as to the IP rating of the phone, but it boasts a oleo phobic coating to help protect against moisture.
Performance -
This phone is very snappy for the price and specifications. I haven't had any slow down when browsing the internet or using social media. I generally don't play games on my phone, so I can't speak to that, however I'm confident it won't have any issues playing basic games (such as candy crush, etc). I expect the performance is probably due to the near base install of Android 7.11. There's barely any software installed other than some basic Google apps and the Moto App. Very happy with it.
The fingerprint scanner on the front is very snappy as well, I didn't notice any perceptible slowness when opening the phone using it.
The battery has lasted me an entire day with moderate usage, I generally end up with around 25-30% battery remaining at the end of the day.
Network -
Doing speed tests on T-mobile's 4g LTE, I was getting around 22-23 mb/s download and 7mb/s upload - sufficient for my needs. I haven't had any issues with reception so far, and connecting to wifi has worked as expected. I was able to connect to both my general wifi network and my 5Ghz network without issue. Streaming Netflix, Youtube, and HBOGO videos have been fine without any buffering. I've also used this phone in my car with Bluetooth to stream Spotify and haven't had any issues - the audio came through fine. Calls over bluetooth have also come in fine and based on my testing my voice came through nice and clear.
Display -
The 720p display is sufficient. I didn't notice any big difference between this and the full hd screen on my daily driver, however this is subjective and others may be bothered by it. I didn't notice any issues watching youtube or netflix on this screen. Colors are decent and individual pixels weren't perceptible by me like you would normally see on budget smart phones.
Camera -
This is the only real negative thing I can say about the phone. The camera is sufficient for snapping photos if you need to, but it isn't anything special. It has a rear 8 megapixel sensor and a front 5 megapixel sensor. The interesting thing is that the front also has a flash, which I haven't seen on many phone recently. The camera quality is to be expected at the price point, and it won't take amazing shots, but it works.
Pros:
- Price to performance is great
- Sufficient for general usage
- Expandable storage
- Near stock install of Android 7.11
Cons:
- (Note: The button on the front can be used for navigation, view the edit for info. This is no longer a con) The finger print scanner is just a finger print scanner. I'm used to it also being a home button, so this can take some getting used to.
- The camera is mediocre at best
- No notification LED on the phone
Overall, the negative parts of this product can be overlooked fairly easily for the price point of the phone. If you are looking for a smartphone that covers the basics of social media, calls/texts, and minor media consumption, you really can't go wrong with this phone. I'm actually considering using this as a daily driver for a little while until the new iPhone/Pixel models are released. I'm definitely keeping this phone as a backup in case I have any issues with my other models.
Update 9/22 - a user informed me that the fingerprint scanner on the front can be used for navigation using the built in moto app. Essentially it reads when you swipe left or right on the fingerprint scanner and will either act as the "go back" or active apps list function. You can also set which side does what, which is nice. It works fairly well, but I noticed I have to slow down my swipe because otherwise it reads it as just hitting the button and goes back to the home screen. I'm used to using the on screen nav buttons now though so I'll turned it off.
Build Quality - This phone has (as far as I can tell) an all-plastic body. The back it textured and feels nice to hold, and the body itself is surprisingly slim. Despite being all-plastic, it doesn't feel cheap, and with the battery inserted, it has a decent amount of heft to it that makes it feel like a more substantial piece of tech. Also, I just wanted to note that Corning Gorilla Glass 3 is a marvel of modern technology. Combined with an oleophobic coating AND a splash resistant coating, the screen on the Moto E4 cleans up incredibly nicely, and is nearly impossible to scratch with simple day-to-day use. Hell, even trying to scratch it PURPOSEFULLY proves to be a difficult task. Although it won't hold up very well to long drops onto hard surfaces (plastic backing isn't that durable, and Glass 3 can be VERY brittle on impact), the Moto E4 should have no problem being stuffed into rough pockets or handled with greasy hands.
The OS - Android 7.1 Nougat, pure and simple. It rocks, and it's the most recent OS you can get right now. (What? What's this OREO you speak of? Pshhhh...)
The Processor - Certainly, there are faster processors out there if you're willing to spend more cash. DO NOT, however, discount the MediaTek CPU in this phone as incapable. Android Nougat 7.1 runs incredibly well on this device, and the processor, no matter how much crap reviewers will give it, can stand up to pretty much anything you throw at it (that is, if you're not playing demanding 3D games on your phone... like... I can't even think of any). Really, you have nothing to worry about with this processor. It does its job very well, and it shouldn't put you off from buying the phone.
The Display - Vibrant and very sharp, and it seems that 720p resolution is perfectly adequate for a device of this size. Frankly, for $130, this phone's display is very good.
The Camera - If anything, I'd say that the camera is the weakest part of the phone. It has LED flash for both the front and rear cameras, which is handy in certain situations. That said, the HDR function is a little on the slow side of things, and the image quality could be sharper. Still, it's not bad for a phone this inexpensive. It works pretty well, but it's definitely no reason to buy this phone on its own.
The Speakers - They're alright. Probably the same idea as the camera for most. They're alright, and that's pretty much it. Hey, the cuts in cost have to come from SOMEWHERE, right?
Anyway, if you're looking for a good phone that's still "relevant" in 2017 and won't make you sad for lack of performance (or of funding), buy this one. You'll like it, I promise.
