Editorial Reviews

After Bach comprises Brad Mehldau's recordings of four preludes and one fugue from J.S. Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier, each followed by an After Bach piece written by Mehldau and inspired by its WTC mate. "There have always been elements of Mehldau's style that recall Bach," writes Timo Andres in the liner note. "After Bach surveys their shared ground as keyboardists, improvisers, and composers, making implicit parallels explicit."

Hopefully the days of simplistic prejudice against any Bach/jazz crossover are long behind us. It's such a rich field. Jacques Loussier's Goldberg Variations stand up well today, and what strikes now, all these years later, about Brubeck's classical-inspired work is the musical thought that's taking place. Same here. Of course Vikingur Olaffson has done some remarkable Bach reimaginings too. Related is Richter's reinvention of Vivaldi's Four Seasons. This is terrific solo piano work; there is such control here, careful construction of sound, and what's remarkable is that there isn't a clear division in the music between Bach's original and Mehldau's new composition: his material flows out of the Bach. I don't know how 'composed' this material is, or whether it's emerged out of improvisation. What is clear is that it does come from sincere respect and appreciation of Bach, fugue and the baroque temperament, but travelling to purely contemporary piano. It's not a background mood music, but asks for purposeful listening. Mehldau balances straight Bach with his own responses 'after Bach,' but if you knew the work of neither and listened to the whole album you'd experience it as a wholly developing unity. Some albums you buy and listen to a couple of times, and then it sits on the shelf, you'll put it on again one day.. This one I've found myself coming back to again and again. It fits in a hole somewhere for me. For one, I'm glad someone's doing this kind of work. Oh, and it's too short. I could have done with another couple of tracks. I'd certainly welcome a follow-up album. It's good to see that the reviews here have been largely positive. I don't imagine that Mehldau reads Amazon reviews, but I hope he's had enough positive feedback to give value to revisiting this project. Good stuff, but if what you want is more jazz-takes on Radiohead, this isn't the one.
