So when I saw this new version being released, I picked up a copy for my family and his. I'm very pleased with the result: The board is now on board game stock and the teeny tiny cards are replaced with larger ones, and aren't required to be placed all over the board ahead of time. (Tokens are now used to denote which rooms have been cleared, which is a sensible improvement.) The basic rules are actually printed on the board, which is a good thing, since the actual instructions are a little unclear about some rules and aren't organized terribly well.
The little generic plastic tokens have been replaced with cardboard standees, two for each character class, one male and one female. The classes have changed since 1979 -- elves, heroes, superheroes and wizards have been replaced with their functional equivalents of halflings, clerics, fighters and wizards -- and some of the monsters have been replaced. All of the art has: The very old school D&D art of the original has been replaced with what looks like art culled from the third and fourth editions of Dungeons & Dragons, which is either a feature or a bug, depending on your tastes.
But the total package is put together better than the original, the map, while technically identical, has been redrawn with better and clearer art and adding the rules to the board makes play go a lot faster. I'm thrilled with this new edition and curious about what this summer's refresh of the game (in time for the release of the fifth edition of Dungeons & Dragons, which this serves as a gateway drug for) will do to it.
For regular use, I'd recommend getting some Reaper Bones miniatures instead of using the unsatisfying cardboard standees -- compare those with the plastic miniatures inside a game of Talisman, for instance, and you can see which will be more fun for kids -- and maybe some cooler dice from Chessex.
But this is a great relatively quick family board game. We play it regularly with our six-year-old, who's the master of swooping in on treasures dropped by wounded family members in battle. (And, perhaps wisely, this edition doesn't include rules for players fighting each other, just monsters.)
Definitely recommended for fans of the original and those looking for a way to introduce younger family members to the world of Dungeons & Dragons.
This is basically a game of getting loot and making it out of the Dungeon with enough of it to win the game (before the other players do). Your hero enters a room, fights a monster and if your hero wins you get a treasure. When you have enough treasure to win the game you must head back to the entrance and make it there alive. .
This is a great fundamental introductory to Dungeons & Dragons for kids.
It teaches two things. Strategy and basic math. If you have kids (girls and boys), they will all have fun playing it. (Its not just a boys game). Pictures on the pawns depict female elves, wizards etc and my daughter loves it.
The pictures for the monsters are well done too. Snakes, Spiders, Orcs, Werewolves, Dragons....
There is also optional solo rules for single player gaming.
Other reviewers complain about the cheap quality but I didn't really think so. Based on certain other products maybe so but I simply didn't see it. Our cat chewed on a player pawn and nothing happened to it! The board is solid and folds out and all the cards and artwork are top rate.
Highly recommend this game and its very well done.
I've really enjoyed the more difficult, more expensive D&D games (Ravenloft, Drizzt). This is vaguely similar - move heroes around and kill monsters - but much simpler. Gameplay summary: take turns moving your hero around the board exploring rooms; each room has one random monster of a certain difficulty level; if you kill the monster, you get treasure; accumulate a certain amount of treasure and return to the center of the board. There are four hero types to choose from, each has certain strengths and weaknesses; some are better against higher level monsters, others can get around the board easier. Higher level monsters provide more treasure, but the heroes capable of defeating the higher level monsters need more treasure to win.
It takes about 30-60 minutes to play.
The game components are almost entirely cardboard... sturdy enough, but I felt like the heroes would have been better as wood/plastic. The box has no storage elements, so the many cards / marking tokens can get jumbled together between plays; you'll want some baggies, rubber bands, or the like so you don't have to resort everything every time you play.
A good value in the $20-30 range.
