Product Description

Product Description

First released in 1975 and revised throughout the 1980s and early 1990s, the Dungeon! boardgame lets you explore a multi-level dungeon in search of treasure guarded by terrible monsters. The deeper into the dungeon you go, the deadlier the monsters and the greater the treasure. The player who returns to the beginning chamber with the most treasure wins!

This re-release of the classic
Dungeon! boardgame stays true to the original but incorporates several revisions made to the game in later editions, giving players the most fun experience possible.

Fun game, decent quality, rules are missing a few details
I also played the old '80s version, and this is a good rendition of it. It's just as fun for two players as it is for more, and it is super-simple to learn. The build quality is mostly good, but the individual player tokens and the cards are a little sub-par. That said, the price is low, and the build quality of the board and the rest of the tokens are great - what you might expect from your average Eurogame. Also, the play (for two players, anyway) is quite quick, so it's easy to play when you don't want to get heavily involved. Our first 2-player game was roughly 30-45 minutes, and we've had games as little as 15-20 minutes.Taking the above at face value, however, the rules could use some more clarity. There are some situations that are simply missing from the rules, perhaps requiring a little errata. For example, there is a card called Crystal Ball that allows you to peek into a room in advance to see what monster and treasure are there, at the cost of not moving that turn. If you're a Wizard, you need to return to the Great Hall occasionally in order to recharge your spells, waiting one turn without moving each time. Technically, you could "not move or attack" by recharging your spells, thus also peeking into a room for each spell you recharge. The rules do not state that this isn't okay, but is this an accidental omission or an intentional decision? This means that the Wizard could spend a few turns wandering around and attacking, then teleport back to the Great Hall and sit there recharging spells while also plotting and planning their next few moves, knowing exactly which rooms to go and attack, clear them out, then teleport back to the Great Hall and repeat. One might argue that this also means that you are giving other players time to catch up... but that's already present in the Wizard's normal recharge process, so that doesn't change.Another rule requiring a little clarity is the Teleport spell for Wizards. (It seems that most of the confusion is around Wizards, doesn't it?) Teleport states that you can move instantly from one chamber (that's "chamber", not "room", and this matters) to another chamber instantly... so long as the destination chamber is in the same Level or on a Level next to the current chamber. However, the Great Hall is a chamber that is technically next to Level 6. It seems a little too easy to simply pop back and forth between the Great Hall and Level 6... but the rules seem to indicate that this is okay. One other rule (again about Wizards!) is that you can seemingly stand just outside a room, fire a spell into that room, and risk nothing because the monster won't chase you or leave the room. This mechanic seems very unbelievable (setting aside the fantasy aspect of the game, of course), as any sentient creature that can see someone shooting a fireball at it is going to want to do something about it. (Especially, say, an Evil Wizard?) But no, the rules say you are somehow safe by standing outside the room, so plink away, cowardly Wizard! To sum up, it's a fun game, great for young or old, new players of fantasy boardgames or seasoned players looking for a little mindless hack'n slash, and is decent build quality. The rules are generally easy to follow, but could use a little clarity here and there, costing this review one star. I'll change the rating to five stars if Wizards of the Coast publishes some errata to update these points. One thing Wizards has also done is release some variant rules that add value to the game, such as the ability to roll dice instead of just moving 5 spaces each turn (which can become tedious) or a cooperative play option. Those rules may be found here: [...]
