- Reviewed in the United States on October 6, 2013This was just the thing I needed when my son was entering his senior year and we were navigating blindly through SATs and the college application and financial need process. I could get tips from the school and from the PTA on academics, but Just One More Thing gave me “permission” to talk to my son about critical life skills that needed to be covered. He needed to think about having a roommate and so my discussions with him about the status of his room expanded to what he would do with a roommate. Discussions on what his church attendance would look like in college led to a chat about Convictions and on how he could link up with some of the para-Christian groups found on campuses that are geared to late teens and early 20 somethings. The book gave us a syllabus that we did not follow chapter by chapter, but that helped us to raise topics that we might have never considered. I read it through first and although I hoped my son would read it on his own, it was something that he knew we were referencing which gave our conversations some validity. Now I have 5 copies to give to friends - doesn't matter if they are Christian or not - this is a great tool to help smooth out the transition out of high school and into the real world.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 21, 2023Started reading with our 8th grader, definitely opens up dialogue and helps to have Scripture support.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 7, 2013Having just sent my first daughter off to college, I still wonder at times if I told her everything I needed to tell her. Did we talk about the really important things? Did we cover the hard-to-discuss things? Does she know how to make the right decisions? Does she know how to operate the washing machine? Will she eat well and keep her dorm room clean? Basically, is she ready?
Just One More Thing Before You Leave Home was written by David Gudgel from a list of conversations he had with his three children before they launched into the world. Now they're recorded in this book for other parents to use with their own children. The book is grouped into ten parts, with three chapters in each part. Its topics include relationships, choices, money, time-management, painful circumstances, careers, moral dilemmas (drinking, gambling, entertainment), sex, spiritual commitments, and practical tips.
Each chapter begins with a personal story that draws you into the subject and helps you relate with the author. Then he gives guidelines from Scripture and general wisdom to help guide the young adult to making the right choices. The chapter concludes with a few discussion questions to help the reader apply the chapter to their own life, or to facilitate discussion between parent and child.
The advice in this book has all been excellent. I haven't read anything that concerned me at all. It's exactly what I want my kids to read/hear as they set out on their own. The book is written with respect for the young adult and not in a demeaning or condescending tone.
Although the book is excellent, I can't see myself sitting and reading it aloud with a teen. I could see having two copies, assigning the reading for a week, and then meeting together to discuss it over coffee. For my daughters, who enjoy reading books about Christian life, I probably would be able to just give it to them to read, and discuss it as they feel led.
Just One More Thing Before You Leave Home is a wonderful resource for parents of teens and young adults. It would make an excellent graduation gift! Or send a copy to a young adult who's already out on their own, trying to find their way. I plan to send it off to college with my daughter after Thanksgiving.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 3, 2013About the Book:
Is your teen successfully prepared to leave home? Just One More Thing is filled with practical advice to help teens transition out of the house and into the rest of their life. In the book, the Gudgels use stories, perspectives, and dialogues to discuss 30 indispensable topics to help teens survive on their own, including: worldview, financial challenges, use of time, career moves, moral dilemmas, sex, painful experiences, and spiritual life, among others. Written from a Biblical perspective, the book is more of a guide to making good decisions than a lecture on how to live. It's perfect for a parent and teen to go over together or to give as a thoughtful gift. This is a book they'll reference for years to come.

My Review:
All parents at that dreaded point of their child leaving home, hope that we equip them well enough for the world out there. The author and his family are no different they wanted to make sure their children knew where they stood as they offered Biblically based advice on everything from choosing room mates to love to the ever challenging spending that all young people struggle with there first time away from home.
The authors are very in depth and helpful and have created the perfect example for every parent to go by when sharing this book and counseling their child. The authors have created a list of 30 common topics and then shared these with their three children to create a talking point with them. The author approached it as a meal shared with his children so that each of them knew where the other stood on each of the topics but he also used it as a gateway to teach them.
This book is the perfect help for parents. A real must read!
