About the Author

Jan Tregidgo has been making bobbin lace since 1980 when she attended a weekend course at Missenden Abbey. From that moment she was hooked and she has been passionate about bobbin lacemaking ever since. As a trained teacher, she has been teaching lacemaking since the late 1980's: locally for Portsmouth College Adult Education classes, at residential colleges and for the Lace Guild. Jan also teaches creative textiles and has combined her modern textile techniques with her traditional bobbin lace skills to produce 'LetExist' - her 21st century approach to contemporary bobbin lacemaking. Jan was awarded a medal of excellence by the Lace Guild in 2007 for her lacemaking skills in a piece of traditional Bedfordshire lace.

Overall I give this book a 5 star rating. I expected a book that just illustrated the different patterns. It starts with a large section on explaining setup. It is a little intimidating, but the progression is logical and thorough. The book then goes into what are called 'samplers'. These are progressive samplers with each one introducing a stitch or technique. The more intermediate and advanced samplers begin to introduce options for adding colors to specific sections, modifying sections, etc. There are 25 different samplers. In my opinion, this book will take you very far in mastering the art. The book ends with adding beads (and probably by extension, tokens), designing and adapting lace patterns, Joining and Mounting lace, and lastly a troubleshooting chapter. The only negative I found is that there were three blurry photos. They weren't blurry to the point where you couldn't make out the point, but blurry enough to look unprofessional. Especially when compared to how crisp and high resolution the other photos were.

This book has the best photo's illustrating the techniques. The wide variety of stitches, techniques and how to's will give any lace maker a great reference book.
It's not just for reference. A new lace maker could follow along trying out each technique. The illustrations and photos shown use colored threads, and you can clearly see how the stitches are formed by following the colors. This is a great idea that I haven't seen very often. And, this one is the best I have seen so far. There are also a few patterns to complete items, once you have mastered the stitches.
I have recommended it to a few beginning lace makers and they have also found it excellent to use and are slowing build up there knowledge and improving their techniques.

I had already seen a copy of this book before I bought it and that was what prompted me to go find a copy for myself. The pictures are large enough to see the detail and the author takes you step by step through the process and with different colors for each bobbin pair so that you can see the progression. It's very detailed and just what most of us need. So many bobbin lace books show a pricking, tell you the number of bobbins (maybe) and the size thread to use. From there on in, you're on your own. This book was extremely affordable compared to many of the other bobbinlace books which are far less informative and therefore, just sit on a shelf gathering dust. I believe if you want a "dying art" to continue, you have to make it understandable and available, which this book does.
