I wish I had read Ken Macrorie's UPTAUGHT A Professor Discovers His Students on the Way to a New University before I starting my career as a high school English teacher. This book made me rethink my entire approach and philosophy on what it means to educate others. Macrorie shares from his personal journal and the writings of his students as he recounts his successes and failures as a teacher of writing on his way to what he called a "third way" of educating others. If you need a book that will make you laugh (and cry), this book holds that opportunity.

Might be THE best book on teaching, appreciating and understanding students and what writing is all about. I have been trying to get this into Kindle format but it is hung up. Get a copy and read it.

In college I used to cruise the library shelves and pick out books, randomly, and then sit down and leaf through them just for fun. I happened to pick out this book. I was hooked on it right away. For the next week, as time permitted, I'd go back to the library pick out the book, and sit down and read it some more. I came across the part where he suggested we write in the margins of books as we read. I started making notes in the book as I read it. A couple years later, I went back to the book shelf and started thumbing through the book again. Someone else had written in the margins, too! They argued, agreed, and added their own reactions to the book, and my writings, as they read. I was able to have a discussion about the book with someone I'd never met. Eventually, the book disappeared completely from the shelf. As an English and creative writing teacher, I have always extolled the virtues of "marginally" discussing a book with someone. Every writer/teacher should have this book on their shelf.
