Sedentary Nation -- The Answers are Not Found in the New Millennium, They're in 1910: Sifu Slim's Guide to Getting Off the Sofa Kindle Edition

4.8 4.8 out of 5 stars 18 ratings

“Sedentary Nation” recalls pivotal moments of the history of physical movement. Despite modernism and the decreasing use of the physical body, the book shows how almost anyone can easily benefit from a program that has a payoff of improved health, youthful look and energy, better sleep, and clearer thinking without the physical toll and battle fatigue that often accompany other approaches to wellbeing and fitness. Expanding on that, the author details how, as Chinese philosophy explains, you can change your thinking and the body will follow. By sharing knowledge and practices from those he respects the most and cites throughout the book, including Jack LaLanne and Bruce Lee, Sifu Slim describes his own journey of self-mastery. “Sedentary Nation” is the result of several hundred interviews and over a decade of research. It stands as both wellness guide for the busy, modern era and humorous memoir of a life spent living the wellness walk.

Review

"Sifu Slim's narrative is a fresh approach to body-mind fitness and is so full of common sense, logic, and promise that following his philosophy and program could very well change your life."--Wendy Allen, PhD, clinical therapist,co-author of "The Business and Practice of Coaching"******"Though people talk about the Paleolithic diet and the hunter-gatherer lifestyle it is rarely presented in context. This book reveals extensive anthropological and historical evidence that provides that context and enlightens the reader of the significance of being true to our own cultural and biological heritage."--Dr. Tom Rook, chiropractor for more than 30 years******"Sifu Slim's book couldn't be more timely for the direction we as a society and planet are heading in community and health. Whether you are new to the movement of living 'natural' or someone who has long been a health advocate, Sedentary Nation fuels a spark to reshape yourself and the world around you."--Isaac Osborne, ASI, AET, posture alignment therapist, owner of Motion Unlimited******"This book hits a home run in capturing the problem of our era. More than 20 years ago, before I went into practice, I thought most of my patients would be people who did physical labor. The opposite is the case: Desk workers have more problems because they don't move all day. The irony is the more educated move less!"--Dr. Donald Liebell, D.C., B.C.A.O., Va. Beach

From the Author

What do electronic gadgets have to do with sedentary lifestyles?Answer: Everything.******You may be thinking that prostrate means lying face down. Itdoes. It also denotes "completely overcome and lacking vitality, will, or power to rise."1 People complain they are so wired and tiredthese days. Some of the sluggish don't even want to get up to goto the bathroom. Loads of people do admit they'll make the effortto move in the direction of the freezer and microwave. Exhaustionbreeds sedentism and sedentism itself breeds further sedentism.Sedentism also lends itself to excessive eating and drinking. ******We are programmed, and in fact we're adept, in consuming food andbeverages, especially the easy-chew food. Food marketers, foodscientists, and our own intensifying addictions easily arouse theimpulse-reward centers of the brain. The pursuit of food, and othernecessities like firewood, water, and shelter, is what kept us doingphysical movement for eons. Now, because of sedentary jobs andother "conveniences," we are no longer mandated to move. The majority of Westerners can spend more than eight hoursper day on digital electronic gadgets, both for work and play. ******What is the number of hours you log?The answers to many of the problems of inactivity, diet, lethargy, stress, and relationships are not easily found in the millennium.Yet they're readily observable in 1910, a time of movement inrelationship to food, family, and work.******The move to wellness is a journey, not a destination. This bookinvites you along for that journey.

Sifu Slim believes in learning by doing. He lives in between Santa Barbara, California and Europe where he enjoys outside maintenance workouts (see MaintenanceWorkout.com) each and every day.

That time for me, usually early morning at or before dawn, gives me the peaceful opportunity to connect mind, body, and spirit. It also was a historic tradition for our ancestors of the Homo species. Getting up early and moving was important to hunter-gatherers and farmers.

The default setting in all of this is to keep moving. Move each morning, move during the day, and stretch before you go to sleep. That tells your body that you need it. It will respond by strengthening itself and you will become more balanced and, with a blessing, more well.

“None of this gets any easier,” he attests. “But feeling good on a natural high never gets old.”

When he turned 53, a contact told him: “I present you to others as a guru. That’s really who you are. You have done your work, you continue mastery of self, and you help others. Why don’t you roll with that?”

“What about the sense of humor of the kid who grew up in New Jersey?” I asked.

“Keep it. Having a light heart makes time pass more quickly, more joyously. Laughter is good. Besides, your being trapped inside the body of Gilligan is obvious and it’s hilarious.”

“Okay,” I responded. “Sifu Slim is now a fully-fledged Sifu.”

The goal now is to maintain that through work, daily practice, and honoring life.

Sedentary Nation is a great source for inspiration to change your life for the better. After reading the book, I definitely feel encourgaged to get off the couch and get moving. I have the book on my ottoman in front of the tv as a reminder to get up from my easy chair. I have incorporated stretching into my daily schedule. Now, the tv may still be on, but I am stretching or using hand weights. The chapter on daily living is a practical way to make positive changes in your life. Sifu Slim's book has had a positive infulence on me with his wisdom and encouragement to get moving. Sedentary Nation brings forth a lifetime of knowlege in an easy to read resource.

An inspiring book to get you moving with applications to use today and entertaining and fun insights from history! I have read Sedentary Nation twice now and keep going back to certain sections that have great tips. Having lived in different places ranging from big city to countryside, I could really feel the difference in how movement is part of daily life. Looking back at history makes you realize how daily tasks actually kept people fit and with all the convince today it is not always the best thing for living healthier. Sure we save time at the moment, but not in the long run.
I recommended this book to some friends who also liked it!

I work in the world Sifu Slim discusses--busy, busy, busy. Since the age of 15, I have been working. Then, two masters degrees came along a bit later. One was in my 20s and one in my 30s. These years of study were a welcome break from my work life. Vacations are something I look forward to. There I have time to regroup. Sifu Slim's message is to take a "vacation" and recreate the mind, body, and spirit every morning. If we start the day with that, we have a good chance at keeping in balance no matter the challenges that may come up later on.

I have always been interested in wellness and I have studied over the years different ways to shift my mind out of the fast world we live in today. This book has reminded me that I can make the shift! Just because the world is digital and I have emails in my inbox doesn't mean that I can't live differently, I can! Thank you for reminding me about the life of my ancestors and encouraging me to live differently. I am getting up now to move around for a bit!
