This book was everything I needed and more! This book was also nothing that I was expecting by any means. It was so much better!

Ethan and Ivy move quickly, that's for damn sure. I love that Ethan had bits of his mother and father's personality. I loved seeing him in his role at the head of the family. He was a king, he acted like a king, and people treated him like a king. Ivy was his perfect match for queen even if her priorities were seemingly different than his own.

I loved the build up to Dona's potential story, and the whole dynamic between Ethan and Wyatt. The entire family dynamic was entertaining as well. Between all the layers of the family, especially the aunts and uncles. It was a nice little dose from the first series. All of the action, blood, sex, love, and angst from the first series is in this book, but done on such a different level. Getting the children's view point on their parents love, and the way they were raised was interesting compared to what we've already read. I love seeing things from another perspective and I feel like JJ McAvoy did that flawlessly in this book!

All I can really say is this story was so good. I don't want to ruin anything, so I'm going to leave it at that. So well written, such a wild and crazy ride, and the way everything pans out and ends... ugh just slow clap for Ethan and Ivy please.

I read the Ruthless People series before reading CoV, but you do not HAVE to! Do I highly recommend you do? Yes! Is it a requirement... not really.

This book was really good. I think that you can beat appreciate this book if you read the earlier series, “ruthless people”. But getting back to this book, it was captivating, interesting with spice and lots of action. I enjoyed every minute of it. As always, JJ’s writing is great. I recommend the audiobook, the narrator does a fantastic job

I loved this book! I enjoyed Mel and Liam but didn't like how they seemed senselessly callous and didn't really seem like they valued anyone other than themselves and their own children. But Ethan.... at first he comes off as the same cold and unattached character his mother and father were but then... he opens up. You see the wheels spinning in his head, you see how far in the future he plans, you see the ties he has to his family and how he will do anything to protect them. How he puts his family first. You are able to truly see that, while he is ruthless, he is not so without reason. He truly is not the instigator. He is very much an anti-hero I can get behind.\

And have I mentioned how much I love Ivy? She is a badass with a heart. She is everything that Mel couldn't be. She is strong, she is ruthless, she is Callahan.

While there were still quite a few typos in this book, there weren't as many as in previous books in this series. I'm not a huge critic when it comes to grammar as long as the writing, the plot, and the characters are good enough to make me not care. This book did that. I was able to only slightly flinch at the errors because the book was so good. I truly felt a connection to these characters that I just didn't feel for the ones in the parent series.

The one thing I hate? WTF is up with that ending? "Et tu, Dona," is right. How can you leave us hanging like that?? Horrible.... almost as horrible of an ending as the one in RP. That ending really did suck... I can't get behind it. This ending though.... it... no words. I can't even.... but it's because I can't wait for more!

So glad I ran across this series and stuck with it even if I wasn't completely crazy about mel and liam. Because Ethan and Ivy have completely made up for any shortcomings of the parents. I can't wait for the next book.

I thought nobody could top Mel.
Ivy was not who I expected Ethan to like but as JJ McAvoy loves to surprise us I fell in love with her. She was brave, courageous, and crazy. Ethan was the ultimate puppet master. This love story was unconventional and perfect in its won way. The Ruthless series continues in this story and I am so glad. We got to see glimpses of Uncle Declan and the clan and I was in love. I wish we got to see more of them.

Donatella... I reserve my judgment for her for the next book. But was of right now I would love to give her AND Wyatt one Tight Slap. Wyatt my favorite sibling left the coop. And damn if Ethan wasn't a genius bringing him back.

JJ McAvoy waved a tale that I would recommend to anyone. I sincerely hope this series continues on for many generations. I'm not ready to say goodbye to the Callahan clan.

    Oh my goodness Ethan...

Okay, if you have not read the Ruthless series, you have missed out on some serious mafia ruthlessness!!! Now, this book is about the children of the main couple of the series. And it did not disappoint! You know sometimes things can be a bit redundant with the children in a spin-off book; well with this book there are similar scenes but not really, it don't make you feel like this again. I take that back, there was a similar bathroom scene with the previous girlfriends of the husband and son, well with this book, the laugh out loud humor is phenomenal. Okay, one line spoiler... "I couldn't carry her out on my head" referencing leaving her to die.
The laugh out loud moments were so awesome, seriously I had to put my Kindle down and just laugh, more than a few times throughout the book. The sex scenes did not disappoint for little Ethan and he is truly not his Dad or his Mom, so you don't worry about mini-me's. Although Donatella disappointingly got on my nerves.

The mafia was the mafia, we did have hands being cut, people killed, family injured and betrayal. There were also corrupt officials like any good mafia.

You will not be disappointed, get this book and the previous series. I CAN NOT WAIT FOR THE NEXT BOOK!!!
I hate I could not put this book down and read it too fast, I just have to read it again.

5.0 out of 5 stars JJ's mind is insane
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 16, 2017
It takes a special mind to write mafia books. Your characters can't just be ruthless, they have to be calculating. They have to be so many steps ahead they're not even in the same place as their adversaries anymore. As I've said before, the Ruthless People series borders on OTT a lot but with this spin-off it seems to be slightly more grounded.

Ethan is the son of the Mad Hatter and Bloody Melody and basically there was no way he was ever going to be anything resembling normal but just like his parents, he has a wonderful public persona. Ethan was raised as the first child of the Italian-Irish alliance and it's nice to see that continued. He was a bit colder than I was expecting but I found myself trusting him and his decisions pretty early on regardless.

Ivy, Ivy, Ivy. In any series where you have to take the place of someone as insane as Melody Nicci Giovanni Callahan, you might think it would be impossible to even try. Instead Ivy is not only a great character, she's the perfect other half for Ethan as well. I found that I really loved her personality and the manner in which she dealt with things. She wasn't afraid to get her hands dirty and she wasn't afraid to let people know what she was thinking. I loved her.

Evelyn is still alive and kicking as are her sons (yes, I said sons) Neal and Declan, the uncles are more background but Evelyn really has a special bond with Ethan that was lovely to see.

We get introduced to Wyatt and Dona to see where they are at this point in their lives. It's certainly...interesting. I cannot wait for their books to see my final thoughts on them (hint: I only currently like one of them).

I didn't like how Liam was seen through the eyes of the kids, given the events of the final book I was under the impression he wouldn't have been a terrible father and yet, he really disappointed me.

The cliffhanger though! I can't see anyway out of it that ends well for all the characters (which is why I'm not an author, let alone a crime/mafia author) but I'm still hoping beyond hope everything works out in a way that doesn't break my heart.

I've read Ms. McAvoy's Ruthless people and so this book was just a continuation for me as I wanted to know what happens to the children. I feel like the first book of the series was a complete let down.
It just seemed like it was written by somebody else entirely. The ending of this book just did not make sense. I'm not sure at this point if I would buy book 2

Good book, good story, but like ALL of the previous books, did no one proof read or edit the final copy before it was published ? Too many spelling mistakes as well as words the wrong way round or missing or printed twice.
I would still get the rest because I enjoyed the story, but really when writers ask us to leave a review because it really helps them how can we believe them when they obviously don't read them, if they did they would surely , after this many books , have the errors corrected.

Love this book more than the ruthless series. Fell in love with both Ethan and Ivy (definately made me question my sexuality) the characters are perfectly designed to connect to your heart strings. McAvoy definately done it this time. I will not be a spoiler... Just read this book... promise you will love it.
