- Reviewed in the United States on January 18, 2023This is the best box set I have ever bought. I purchased it after watching the phenomenal film series which is recommended to anyone with even the slightest interest in music and American history. It is an extraordinary undertaking full of amazing music, fascinating characters and incredible archive. This box set is the deep dive into the music around the series and it is simply breathtaking. The song selection is a revelation. I had no idea music as raw and exciting as this was recorded in the 1920s and 1930s. The sound quality is phenomenal. The musicians sound like they're in the room with you. My dad has lots of 1920s complications and none of them sounded even close the extraordinary audio on these discs. The liner notes are hugely informative filled with amazing photographs and pictures of almost all the 100 artists. And there are lyrics for all the songs with even translations of the Cajun songs. I think its one of the best albums ever made and I expect it to reveal new insights and pleasures over the years to come. Bravo!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 18, 2017This first came to my attention when my local library got the book, shortly before the premiere of the TV show. (BTW, unlike most of these tie-ins, the book is probably 85% different material than what they show, mostly additional background the performers and what had to be done to track down their stories, and a lot of information about the recording process. Really good, in some ways better than the show.)
About one chapter into the book, I pre-ordered this set. As I already have cd versions of about 60% of the songs, it was kind of a questionable purchase, but I'm glad I went ahead. These recordings sound "clean" without being "cleaned up", in the sense that you really feel like you can hear everything that was originally recorded without the "enhancements" some engineers do to brighten the sound, bring some parts forward to meet modern expectations, or erase what they feel were mistakes. There is also a noticeable absence of scratches and static, which I know some purists feel takes away from authenticity, but which I've always felt the original listeners would just as soon have done without if the technology had allowed it.
If you are at all interested in the history of non-mainstream recorded music in this country, this is a worthwhile starting point.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 20, 2017Everything said about this music is true - it's a national treasure, both in historical importance and in the quality of the music and the performances. Moreover, engineer Nick Bergh has seemingly worked magic with all of the American Epic tracks: the sound here is simply breathtaking. Most of these tracks are available elsewhere, lovingly restored and remastered by top-notch engineers of major recording companies...and they're all rendered obsolete by these recordings, which must now be considered the definitive remasters.
A unique feature of both this Collection and the American Epic: The Soundtrack is that the producers have included lyrics for every song. The result hits the mark, providing context for the modern listener to appreciate this diverse array of artists from nearly a century ago.
Note that the single-disc Soundtrack actually includes 4 tracks that are omitted from this Collection. They are: Frankie (Mississippi John Hurt), Cocaine Habit Blues (Hattie Hart and the Memphis Jug Band); Up Above My Head (Sister Rosetta Tharpe); and Jole Blon (Breaux Brothers with Louis Michot). The first three are historical recordings, while Jole Blon is a new recording performed for the American Epic film.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 6, 2022The under $40 price is amazing. This set is worth far more. I've paid much more for sets of this nature Makes a great gift for someone whose into American Roots Music,Country & Blues. Or yourself! The mastering is absolutely outstanding. I own some of these songs on other sets & compilations & this is the best sound of any of them. Buy it at this price.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 14, 2023Due to family sickness, these items have not been given yet to family members intended for, so can not
rate how the items received perform for them, but both items received intact in new condition. Looking forward to when recipients can receive them and give me feedback on their performance. Thank you so much! Have a Good New Year!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 10, 2020Music on my ipod (yes, I still use one of those). Now I'm told, that I should buy a new phone with more memory. Why the phone and the ipod are both paid for, and I use the phone all the time. The ipod comes when I'm driving and want to listen to music; or when I take the train to the city and I listen during the ride, waiting for the train, and usually, waiting for a doctor. That's what most of my trips to the city involve.
Of note, Amazon sent me two copies of this Collection. Why, I don't know.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 9, 2020The reverse engineering using rebuilt equipment similar to what was available in the 1920s has produced the best sound of these rural folk artists. Clean, clean, clean. Full of charming Americana, I can't say enough good about this music. Treat yourself and buy this collection. You will not be sorry!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 13, 2020Just buy it. The recording of modern artists on nearly 100 year old equipment is amazing. Pure music. No studio tricks. Amazing. Both sonically and historically.

5.0 out of 5 stars You owe this to yourself
You! Yes, you. I know why you're here. You have an expansive and explorative taste in music and are curious as to whether this collection of old oldies is worth investing in for a physical copy. Hell, you've probably already sampled the merchandise on Spotify and know full well that this is an absolute gift to anyone who loves music beyond the boundaries of their time: the songs aren't just of historical interest, they're also visceral and beautiful. Given how long they all predate Chuck Berry, it's incredible how many of these recordings flat out rock. But I digress: the physical package is gorgeous, a large hardback book complete with lyrics, photos and intelligent linear notes. Where some boxsets pack their discs in awkward, snappy plastic, the five CDs here are slipped into thick and glossy card. Every care has been taken to make this appeal to epicuriates of music: this has clearly been a labour of love for the manufacturers/designers. I'm glad I got it for less than £40, but having now owned it I would have happily paid at least £60. So consider this package a reward to yourself for all those years spent going down those less travelled paths of music. Go on, treat yourself.

5.0 out of 5 stars I N D I S P E N S A B L E ! ! !
Un complément indispensable à l'extraordinaire compilation "American Pop: An Audio History - From Minstrel to Mojo On Record, 1893-1946" de 9 CDs sortie en 1998.
