Body Parts Paperback – August 15, 2017

4.3 out of 5 stars 76 ratings

Never Let Me Go meets The Island for YA―perfect for fans of Cat Patrick and Suzanne Young.

Raised in an elite foster center off the California coast, sixteen-year-old Tabitha has been protected from the outside world. Her trainers at the center have told her she’ll need to be in top physical condition to be matched with a loving family. So she swims laps and shaves seconds off her mile time, dreaming of the day when she’ll meet her adoptive parents.

But when Tabitha’s told she’s been paired, instead of being taken to her new home, she wakes up immobile on a hospital bed. Moments before she’s sliced open, a group of renegade teenagers rescues her, and she learns the real reason she’s been kept in shape: PharmPerfect, a local pharmaceutical giant, is using her foster program as a replacement factory for their pill-addicted clients’ failing organs.

Determined to save the rest of her friends at the center, Tabitha joins forces with her rescuers, led by moody and mysterious Gavin Stiles. As they race to uncover the rest of PharmPerfect’s secrets, though, Tabitha finds herself with more questions than answers. Will trusting the enigmatic group of rebels lead her back to the slaughterhouse?

Jessica always thought her penmanship would improve with age. She even wished for it on her eleventh birthday. To improve her legibility and speed, she hijacked her grandma’s typewriter—a really cool one with white correction tape—and started creating fictional worlds.

That same grandma took Jessica to her first writers’ group meeting where she shared a story about fairies. The writing sucked, but with time, her craft began to improve. Sadly, her penmanship has not.

Today she writes Contemporary and Speculative Fiction for Young Adults. Story ideas often strike at inopportune times, and she’s been known to text herself reminders from under the covers.

Suspenseful, romantic, mysteries have always been a favorite read for me and this book filled all three genres.

“Suspense” because Tabitha has always trusted those who run the orphanage she grew up in. That trust is violently broken when it becomes apparent she was carefully raised for her body parts. This unbelievable shock hurdles her into a world of distrust, even in those supposedly trying to help her.

“Romance” because there is Parker who loves and protects Tabitha as they grow up together in the Center of Excellence. She trusts Parker completely and makes a promise when she leaves the orphanage, one she plans to keep. Then enters Gavin, her rescuer, someone she is attracted to, yet his secrets arouse suspicion and distrust.

“Mystery” because Tabitha periodically has flash backs of a life before the orphanage. What happened to the people in her visions? Who is head of all this evil that surrounds her? The only way to find out is to escape and there seems no way off this gruesome Island of fear!

The author does an excellent job of introducing each character so you easily grow to love or hate them. She cleverly heightens the suspense through good versus evil by allowing the later an occasional win.

I gave this book 5 stars because this author’s creative use of intrigue captured my interest from the very beginning. The suspense kept the pages turning, the romantic competition added spark, and I couldn’t wait for the mystery of Tabitha’s visions from her past, and the “who” behind PharmPerfect to be solved. I highly recommend this book for young (and older) adults.

There's a medication you can take to be stronger. Another one to make you smarter. Another to make you more beautiful. Another to make you faster. In fact, there's a medication for anything you want to change about yourself. You can take your pick and you have money to burn so you can take as many different types as you want. You continue taking them all because they work so well. Then you find out your liver is failing and you need a transplant or you'll die. Do you question where your new liver is coming from? Do you brush aside any ethical dilemmas you might stumble across in the process and decide to go ahead with the surgery anyway? After all, your life is on the line.

I'm not quite sure how she did it but Jessica Kapp reeled me in by the end of the first page and had me on her hook until the end of the book. Body Parts provides a very interesting (and quite scary) commentary on both the organ transplant and pharmaceutical industries.

In the beginning of this book we meet a group of children at the Centre who are being trained to be as healthy as possible in order to increase their chances of being placed with a foster family. Each child has lived in hope that their dream of belonging in a real family will come true. We follow Tabitha as she's given the news that a family wants to foster her and when she subsequently learns that nothing at the Centre is as it seems. Who can you trust when everything you've been taught growing up turns out to be lies?

I loved a lot of the characters, especially Mary, but felt like some of the peripheral characters blended into each other a bit. I enjoyed the uncertainty I felt along with Tabitha regarding who she could trust, and liked that some characters had motives that weren't always immediately apparent. Some minor irritations, such as the ending feeling rushed and finding the Insta-love annoying at times, didn't detract from my enjoyment of this book. I found myself wanting to rush through to find out if my suspicions about certain characters were valid and who would be saved from getting slaughtered for spare parts.

I kept thinking as I was reading that a scenario like that described in this book isn't so far fetched that it's not within the realms of possibility. Is it really that much of a leap, when there's already distrust surrounding big drug companies and so many stories about black market organ theft, to believe they could easily merge into one hugely profitable venture?

Yes, I'm still happy to be an organ donor, but not until I've finished using them. Young adults and adults alike will enjoy this book and I'll be looking out for future books by Jessica Kapp. Thank you so much to NetGalley and Diversion Books for the opportunity to read this book.

How far would you go to achieve perfection in your appearance, mental and physical abilities? Body Parts is a distopian novel about a society obsessed with their appearance and physical achievements. PharmPerfect, a pharmaceutical company, develops the drugs that provide the desired results, but at a tremendous cost to their drug addicted customers. Organ failures are the ultimate cost.

From the first page, Jessica Kapp's novel draws the reader into a society where the promise of perfection is valued more than innocent human life. This fast paced, terrifying glimpse into the future is a page turner. The characters are well developed and what motivates their actions keeps the reader questioning who can be trusted until the very end.

I highly recommend Body Parts. It is skillfully written and will leave you with the question, "How far would you go?" I look forward to Jessica Kapp's next book. She is an author with a creative mind and talent.

Minus the finger prints on the book and the candy wrappers in the pages (this was supposed to be a new book), the book itself is an excellent read, I didn't want to put it down. I cant wait to read another book from this author. Highly recommend this author and Body Parts, you wont be disappointed.
