- Reviewed in the United States on June 24, 2019Al Ewing tries to wrap up a saga of the Inhumans, a favorite of mine that gets chronically misused in the Marvel universe. After trying to have them substitute for the X-men in what largely seemed like a misguided MCU-driven decision, various writers have struggled to get them to align correctly and to get a clear tone for the Inhuman's book. The multidimensional nature of the plot here doesn't so much help. The art is remarkably inconsistent although enjoyable at points.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 16, 2018I came to this series really hoping that Al Ewing could breathe new life into the Inhumans, but it's just not happening. Here the royal family heads into deep space in the hopes of finding something to replace the Terrigen Mists and continue Inhuman culture. But these are fundamentally unlikeable characters, and nothing makes them any more likeable as they go.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 20, 2019The first collected volume of “Royals” had a good deal of potential that never quite came together. Writer Al Ewing offers some nice moments--including an interesting take on Maximus--but the plot often lags. Having the art team led by a constantly changing committee doesn’t help, even when different styles are used to indicate various periods and changes of time. There are some solid character moments, especially for Maximus and Medusa, but too much time and attention are paid to non-entities and even some longtime Inhuman characters play a, at best, forgettable, role. While this is not a bad collection by any means, the potential is never fulfilled.
