- Reviewed in the United States on July 6, 2016Highly recommended for anyone interested in studying in the States, whether they are highschoolers or college students thinking about the future or are professionals wondering how to make a large life change with family in tow.
Dr. Marin breaks down the entire process from why it is worthwhile to dream big to how to achieve your goal of studying in the US. He writes candidly about his own humble background, with insights that will both inspire and motivate students and professionals who can see themselves and fellow countrymen in his journey. More importantly the book provides a clear idea of how higher education in the US works in a way that breaks down myths about studying in the US. This helps makes clear to potential students all the possibilities available to them in a country and educational system that operates very differently from those in Latin America. For example, he explains how hiring processes mean professors with degrees from and connections to prestigious universities (ones foreign students have likely heard of) can be found at universities throughout the country that foreign students may never have heard of or considered (the lesson being you don't need to go to Harvard or Yale to get a good education and professional connections).
The book also covers the realities of studying abroad providing information and resources for dealing with fear of failure, establishing a support network, integrating with locals and helping spouse and children make the transition.
Since the book is available as an ebook anyone with a smartphone can read it easily so it makes a great gift for any Spanish speakers in your life seeking encouragement and guidance for studying in the US.
