1) Make sure you have room where you want to mount the thing. I had to re-route the intake air and exhaust pipes from the furnace (3" PVC) to free up the necessary real estate. Honestly, that was a bigger pain in the neck than the entire humidifier install process.
2) I installed on the supply side, well above the air conditioning evaporator (A-coil), and plumbed in cold water. Flipped the switch after completing the installation and watched a hygrometer in my kitchen climb from 11% to 35% over the course of a few hours. It has maintained a consistent, comfortable level of humidity sense. Lots of questions about where to mount it what kind of water - the arrangement I described is working very, very well.
3) I cut the hole in the duct using a jig saw with a 30 tpi bi-metal blade. Hot knife through butter. Quick, clean, straight cuts. Drill a few half inch holes in the waste area for places to start cuts. Also, cut on the inside of the line. There isn't much meat left over to install screws; making the hole a little tight helps. Speaking of screws - the holes provided in the bottom of the mounting bracket are inside the cut template - no meat there to put a screw in. Use your imagination and find another spot. I put them in the lower, outside corners of the space that house the drip panel. Just enough metal left to drive some #8 self drilling screws.
4) I used the included saddle clamp to tap into the copper pipe feeding my water heater - down stream from the valve so I have a way to cut water to the humidifier without shutting off the main. These little contraptions work surprisingly well and are very easy to install. Do the plumbing between the two appliances with 1/4 inch soft copper tubing. Directions on the package are clear enough - just follow them and make sure the connections are tight.
5) Wiring is easy if you're patient and can read a simple schematic. Get a spool of 18-5 HVAC wire to make the connections to the furnace and a spool of 18-2 to make the rest. Just connect the terminals where there are lines drawn between them - it really is that simple. If there is a line between W in one spot and W in another - you guessed it, connect those two points with a wire. Bonus points for using the White wire in the 18-5. And in case you weren't an art major, C means cyan...which is a fancy word for blue.
6) You probably won't need to drill a hole in your house to install the outside temp sensor. I ran mine through the make-up air intake duct. As luck would have it, mine exits the house under my deck so the sensor is well protected from snow and damage. Unless a squirrel gets a hold of it. Hmmm. Didn't consider that until now. I should probably post a sentry. Or maybe just post a note. Does anyone here speak squirrel?
In summary, it works really well. You can probably handle the install. If you're impatient or completely unfamiliar with hand and power tools, suck it up and pay a pro. No, you're not getting "ripped off" - he/she is a professional in their trade and ain't living in a mansion on the hill.
You'll need these items:
Something to cut the ductwork with. I used a cut off wheel on an electric angle grinder. I traced the template with sharpie, then cut it out with the angle grinder. It was cake and the lines were perfect. No way I could have done it that neatly with tin snips.
You'll probably want some foil tape too. I put it around the edges to ensure an air tight seal since it's on the supply plenum.
You'll need copper tubing. The same exact size you use for an ice maker on a fridge. (They include the saddle valve) Length depends on how far your supply plenum is from your water pipe that you're tapping into. They suggest you tap into a hot water pipe. Don't tap into PVC. Use the saddle valve on a copper pipe. I tapped into the copper pipe on the hot water side of my hot water heater about a foot above my water heater. (you'll know it's the hot side because the inlet side is cool to the touch and the outlet is hot. the hot one is the one you want) You'll also need a tubing cutter if you don't plan on using the entire length. You have to use a pipe cutter to get a clean safe cut. If you try to cut with dykes or shears, you'll smash the pipe and it'll leak. Use a proper pipe cutter. They're cheap. ( like $2 at a hardware store)
You'll also need the (typically clear colored) rubber hose that's 1/2" inner diameter that's used to go from the drain on the bottom of the unit to the floor drain. If your HVAC installer was nice, they may have left a T junction and a CAP where your AC system drains its water to that you can stick the tube into for drainage.
If you don't have an outlet near the unit (3 ft cord I believe? maybe 4 or 5? it's fairly short) you will need to cut the plug off and hard wire it into your mains. My furnace has an electrical switch (like ones that turn bedroom lights on and off) on the side where the power goes into the furnace and lets you turn power on or off in emergencies. The hot and neutral wires go into the furnace from that point. You can tap into those and just use those wire screw cap things to join them.
You'll also need small gauge wire to run between the furnace control panel, the humidifier, and the humidifier's control panel. Something around 16 gauge should be fine. WIre strippers aren't necessary but are cheap and will save time.
Cable tires are handy since you'll have a nice webbing of wire coming out of the bottom of the unit that you can cable tie together for that professional look.
I didn't bother with automatic mode. I hear it's not reliable. I set it up as manual mode. The instructions will have details on how to do that. Automatic mode requires running a wire to the outside of your house somehow, where you hook up a temperature sensor. It's a pain and I didn't bother. If you plan on running manual mode too, just buy the manual control version of this humidifier and save yourself ~$50
That should be nearly everything you need to get this installed.

We bought a second one for our rental property since it suffered from the same issue with the hardwood floor. The house would also get squeaky stairs in the winter. 48 hours after install, the stairs stopped squeaking. The rental property has its furnace in a tight closet where a convention bypass humidifier would not have fit. Installation was simple, but this time I used the 24v transformer and humidity control supplied with the unit. The controller and humidifier was mounted on the cold air return of the furnace due to the tight space, and supplied the unit with hot water. Again overnight is raised the humidity to the set point of the controller. I did not setup the unit for automatic mode with outdoor sensor as I don't see the point. The outdoor sensor will automatically lower the humidity inside when very cold outside to reduce condensation on windows. However, the entire point of installing the system was to maintain humidity a a constant level during the winter to avoid damage to mouldings and hardwood floors.
