Midnight Nation Paperback – February 4, 2003

4.5 out of 5 stars 141 ratings

Midnight Nation is a thought-provoking story with religious overtones about a police officer in limbo who goes on a cross-country search for his soul, but encounters some mighty obstacles along the way. When Midnight Nation was first released in 2000, J. Michael Straczynski's provocative storytelling and the fantastic art of Gary Frank (Action Comics, Squadron Supreme) captivated readers with its mix of action, horror, and drama built around a message of hope, loyalty, and sacrifice. Collected now for the first time in a deluxe, oversized hardcover, this edition includes Midnight Nation #1-12, the Wizard #1/2 issue, a spectacular cover gallery, and never-before-seen extras!

Brilliant!

Brilliant!
This is a fantastic trade paperback. Straczynski's writing and Frank's artwork come together with freshness and originality. The story has a lot of great Heaven and Hell stuff, kind of like Garth Ennis' "Preacher" books with a bit of X-files thrown in. It's pretty intense, definitely not for kids. It's nice and long, so you can settle down for a good read. And you won't see the ending coming, it's handled very well. This was a joy to read. Check it out!

This is one of the most intriguing,thought-provoking books you'll EVER read,in the graphic-vovel/comics genre or OTHERwise!! You'll be forever on the edge of your seat, and find yourself genuinely concerned about David and Laurels safety,as they journey on through danger, deceit and denial!! Loved how"Arthur"explained the"rules"concerning his helping them on their long quest, including:"Rule 4;I get to ADD more rules whenever I feel like it." Then he later adds:"Don't ever interrupt me when I'm talking, and never EVER interrupt Laurel when SHE's talking;last guy who tried that, she smote him." At that David asks"SMOTE"?!?" Laurel half-embarrassingly offers:"I keep busy." Another time David asks her how FAR is it to their destination, and Laurel frankly says:"The distance between HERE and there." Laurel actually shares a mantra with me,with:"That IS the answer to the question you asked;I give answers, not EXPLANATIONS." Nice touches on the Biblical front include where Lazarus hears David after having his ears assaulted by a LOUD,shrill whistle exclaim:"Jesus!!"in alarm, and looks around hopefully with:"WHERE?!?"as he's been waiting on Jesus' return since being raised from death BY him!! Also,as a believer with considerable Biblical knowledge, appreciated Lazarus' resurrection from his OWN perspective with;"I remembered talking in Bethany in the afternoon with my sister Mary, and Martha, then suddenly getting very, very sick and waiting on Jesus to come see about me,but three days passed and He never came, and I found myself resting peacefully and comfortably in darkness, thinking this was the end, when I heard someone call my name." After that,I ate,and though it tasted good,I was never hungry, never got tired, and never worried...I just "WAS". So,I went to Jesus to see what I must do,because it was His fault I was back right?!? But He just told me:"Wait until I shall return." So I waited, and waited, and waited(as scenes of Lazarus standing in Ancient Egypt, the Victorian era of Europe, the Dark Ages are pictured)and waited. He must have forgotten about me!!" I also liked how the Adversaries' lies about God and Creation seem to carry validity,as the Adversary always mixes his lies in with a pinch of"logic"and TRUTH,as to get the listener to weigh his words, and therein lies his great snare!! Only afterwards did I catch the hints to Laurels true nature,as the Adversary kept urging her to quit being a pawn, and rebel, like he did,and join him, with a chance to reunite with the love he once had for her!! Noticed how"The Other Guy"wistfully mused:"NO one is SO far fallen that he can't return." But incredible was the sheer emotion displayed when David considers the ramifications of sacrificing for Laurel:"Look,I've come SO far,but..." She says:"I know;I forgive you David."when he interjects sadly:"I guess I put you through A

ALL of this for nothing." Then Laurel looks"wounded"by this comment,as a tear falls from her eye as she replies:"For "nothing"?!?"when David makes his hard decision with an honest profession of his feelings for her!! Loved how David when thinking twice about sacrificing for Laurel says:"Look,I've come from SO far to get this,but...." At that Laurel says:"I know;I forgive you David."as David concludes with:I guess I put you through ALL of this for nothing." Laurel visibly"wounded"by this statement, tearfully asks:"For"nothing"?!?" David then confesses his feelings for her as he makes a very hard decision, which makes the Adversary, watching events from afar say:"Well,I certainly didn't see THAT coming." Theyoung, skinny girl showing concern for a troubled-looking David was the PARAGON of good writing,as she walked back to her mother, before ashooting last glance of David from a distance, while softly saying:"Thank you"was .the PARAGON of good writing!! Just HOW well-written is this tale?!? Well,it inspired me(an adroit writer in my own right)to create a resourceful character patterned after Laurel, called"Audra Rose Black"who endures a similarly harrowing adventure while manifested in a form belying her true, transcendent nature!! Be warned to pay close attention, when David meets his future-self on the road,as things can get pretty confusing, especially when the perspectives of this meeting gets changed from the future-Davids perspective with the present-Davids by the author!! Gary Franks pencils bring this whole epic to"LIFE"with the excellent emotion illustrated in the characters faces and eyes!! Reading this on the heels of suffering a massive stroke which hit AS I was reading issue"#10 of this series, and ravaged my body, decimated my memory(with the"removal"of a QUARTER of my frontal cerebral cortex)most of my"friends"and my career, made the whole concept of"falling through the cracks"all too real!! Laurel is a relentless, driven lady, who is DEADLY in hand-to-hand combat, and manages to be"sexy"and attractive, withOUT giant"D-cups",a"bubble"butt,or running about in a sleazy outfit, revealing too much cleavage, seemingly picked-up off the set of some campy 80s' XXX-rated movie!! Gary Frank proved that thin can not merely be"in"but can even be a"TEN"with Laurels lithe figure!! Not only pleasing in appearance, she had a"cute"persona,as she grew angry at one point and barked at someone:"Look,I've been on the road a LONG time and I'm damned TIRED of it,and I'm NOT in any mood to answer stupid questions!! I loved the numerous times she'd threaten to kill David with:"If you do that ONE more time,I swear I'll kill you."in a calm, frank manner. Loved the part where David undergoing one of the Adversaries"experiments"of"playing God"frankly stated:"This is profoundly stupid." I had more delight in reading THIS well-written book, than I did viewing the last FOUR,insipidly-written Hollywood offerings on the silver-screen. Midnight Nation is something to BEHOLD!! Going to get another copy to give to a bright, chipper young lady at my church,so she can experience what a clever intricate story is,in this day of HORRIBLY-scripted garbage like"The Walking Dead". If you enjoy a good epic, with excellent character-development,and a steady plot development,"Midnight Nation"is just what the doctor ordered!! You'll want to read this one, over and over and over AGAIN!! Loved how David thought deeply about the ramifications of sacrificing for Laurel with:"Look,I've come from SO far away to get here,but...." Laurel understandingly says:"I know;I forgive you David." Then David says wistfully:"I guess I put you through ALL of this for nothing." Laurel visibly"wounded"by this statement tearfully replies:"for"NOTHING'?!?" At which point David finally professes his feelings for her,and makes his decision, which makes the Adversary watching events from afar off say:"Well,I certainly didn't see THAT coming." Then to add a CROWNING touch,to an already ACME-level story, the skinny girl seeing David sitting on a park bench looking troubled, then asking:"Are you o.k sir?"was the PINNACLE of story-development,as she walks back to her concerned mother, before looking David in the eye from afar and softly saying:"Thank you." It's been quite a while since any movie, book or television series left me sitting around with a smile affixed on my face.

    J. Michael Straczynski grew on me. I came up with David Michelinie on Amazing Spider-Man and suffered through some terrible writers and a few that weren't bad but a bit out of touch for years until Straczynski took over in vol. 2 around issue 30, and I dug him until I didn't, which, from what I understand, wasn't exactly his fault. Fast forward to around the covid shutdown, and I started reading his AWA books, and they were amazing. I didn't know about Midnight Nation a book that came along around his Spider-Man years I just knew it was Top Cow and I'm a mark for that imprint so I bought the run and stuffed it in my Top Cow long box never expecting to read this story and I'm not sure why I did. I'm not sure why I bought this digital copy. I guess it just was (and once you read this book, you'll understand why it just was is pretty significant). I love a good road story, and I love when that road goes somewhere. I loved where it took me. This is a hidden gem in the dollar bin. A comic that'll never be worth anything and in (as of this review) my 34 years of collecting and reading comics, the dollar bin has some of the best comics you'll ever read. This is one of those books. It has that great Top Cow art by Gary Frank and is as solid as and early Valiant writing and then some. It's a story that stays with you and obviously meant something to JMS. However, you find this book take a day or more and check it out. You'll definitely feel you got your money's worth.

Midnight Nation (inexplicably labeled as Vol. 1, as I don't think there was ever any intention of continuing the story) is an outstanding graphic novel. The art is very good throughout with some memorable images that support the story. But this is really Straczynski's show. As a die-never fan of Babylon 5, I'm happy to follow JMS wherever he'll take me. Though he can at times be a bit wordier than need be—and there's a certain plot point that recalls Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure, as well as an aspect of B5—I love his rhythms, sense of humor, and, most of all, his ability to evoke real emotion.

The premise requires a bit of acceptance on the reader's part, but if you give yourself over to some of the far-fetched aspects (even for sci-fi), the reward in the conclusion is well worth it. I didn't think I had connected with the characters to any large degree as the story progressed, but the payoff at the end revealed that these characters really do have an unexpected depth.

The only thing I wish they'd done differently in assembling this collection was if they'd presented the cover images for each issue/chapter in their original location, rather than gathering them at the back of the book. On the one hand, I see why they wanted to keep the story flowing as one continuous story. On the other hand, it felt like reading a novel with the chapter titles deleted. A brief pause to admire the cover art at each break would have been a little better. Nevertheless, this is a great story, well told, with adult themes, intelligence, and wit. It's a great use of the graphic novel format, and I highly recommend it for fans of the genre.

Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 31, 2013
I read this book last night for the first time, liked it. liked it a lot. Then this morning i read the bit after the apparent end and was left breathless. I read a lot of graphic novels, so many i have to hide them to avoid looking like the geekeiest boy in the village, which i totaly am buy the way. Few, very few are this good, near none have this amount of heart and what used to be called bottom to them(look it up its somat like guts but more...), then when you read the history of how the writting came about i defy you not to be affected by that knowlage.

Many of us have, or will, feel like we are, or deserve to be, a part of the midnight nation. Its a desperate place to be, lonley and voiceless are those so placed. it takes monumental luck or serious compasion on the part of another to leave this part of society, and join the daylight nation as its put. In this book with one fantastical bound they are free but in the real world it takes more, the devise in the book and in real world is the same, kindness, compasion, love for your fellow people. we all need to be cared about, and that is well hamerd home here. soapbox dismounted.

please read, enjoy it, it is fun, but also i hope you take more from it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Startet gut, flacht zum Ende ab. Buch fällt (klebetechnisch) leider auseinander :(
Reviewed in Germany on October 1, 2018
