Editorial Reviews

About the Author

Garret Romaine is an energetic writer and rockhound from the Pacific Northwest, having authored Gem Guides for both Oregon and Washington. Born in Spokane, he earned a geology degree from the University of Oregon and a geography degree from the University of Washington, and he currently teaches technical writing at Portland State University. He has earned numerous journalism and technical writing awards in his career, and continues to dabble in technical journalism and technical documentation when he's not writing field guides.

Garret is equally enthusiastic about gold prospecting, fossil hunting, and rockhounding, and is even starting to dabble in meteorite hunting. He was a reader and user of Gem Guides titles long before he wrote his first book, and credits his wife Cindy for giving him a copy of the first edition of Gem Trails of Oregon in 1989. He still has that dog-eared edition, full of hand-written margin notes. Little did she know that years later he would updated that title for its 3rd edition. He wrote for the Gold Prospectors Association of America (GPAA) for 15 years, producing nearly 100 articles for the "Mining the Internet" column, and he still publishes occasional articles there. He is a current or past member of some of the larger gold prospecting clubs in Washington and Oregon, and stays current on the region's legal issues. He is also a member of the North American Research Group (NARG), a thriving club of fossil hunters. That group conduct frequent "search and rescue" operations to secure paleontology specimens before erosion and weathering take their toll. In 2010, Garret was named to the Board of Directors for the Rice Museum of Rocks and Minerals in Hillsboro, Oregon, and in 2014 he was named Secretary.

He is active in social media, and you can find him on Facebook.

Garret Romaine is an award-winning journalist and technical writer hailing from Portland, Oregon. His grandfather, Harold Banta, was an attorney in Baker, Oregon specializing in mining law, and his grandmother Floy ran a rock shop in Baker. As a boy, Garret visited many collecting areas, mines, and ghost towns in the Baker area, and was hooked for life on field work. He earned a geology degree from the University of Oregon, studying under stalwarts such as Dr. Ewart Baldwin, Dr. William Orr, and Dr. Allan Kays, and followed that up with a master's degree in geography at the University of Washington and an MBA from Portland State.

Garret has written for multiple publications in the Portland area, and has managed technical writing teams for several technology companies. He has taught technical writing at Portland State since 1997, and serves on the board of directors for the Rice Northwest Museum of Rocks and Minerals and the North America Research Group, devoted to fossil hunting.

Garret authored a regular column entitled "Mining the Internet" for the Gold Prospectors Association of America (GPAA). He has written features, product reviews, personal interviews, field reports, and research compilations for many locales across the west. He wrote Gem Trails of Washington, updated Gem Trails of Oregon, and wrote Rockhounding Idaho. He has also written a series of rock & gem identification books, plus handbooks for rockhounds and prospectors. He has written gold panning guides for the Pacific Northwest and California, and is working on Colorado next.

In 2017, he completed "Geology Lab for Kids" which explores easy lab experiments for kids to educate them about crystals, fossils, meteorites, and geology.

Mr. Romaine continues to recon and explore, and with the help of Martin "Dusty Fingers" Schippers, he produced a series of YouTube videos modestly titled "Garret's World of Geology." It's an easy Google search. The inspiration behind the videos, each under ten minutes in length, is to share great rockhounding spots and encourage people to get out and explore.

He also has a blog at http://writingdocs.blogspot.com/ and can be found on LinkedIn and Facebook.

What a gem! Pun definitely intended. I purchased this book a few weeks before my trip to WA and just wow, what a brilliant piece to have with you. My boyfriend and I were able to hound a few of the destinations listed and were pleasantly surprised with the stones we found. We even ran into someone else hounding with the SAME BOOK. It was a pretty awesome moment. All in all, I’m super happy with my find. The entries were very well written and the detail provided was exactly what we needed out there. Highly recommend!

This book is very well written, with good directions to the sites. It has pictures and information about the materials to look for. It covers a lot of sites in each area. I live in SE Washington, and it has many short trips with 3 or 4 sites per trip.

Great book for rockhounding. This book not only gives you GPS coordinates of sites, but there are also detailed descriptions of how to reach each site. On top of that the books also includes a map for every site on the book.

I have used this book in several occasions to go rockhunting. Some of the mentioned spots are well known by people and have been mined pretty heavily. Other mentioned locations are less disturbed and provide a chance to find interesting specimens. So far I have used this book to find agates and quarts crystals.
