About us
Lisle Corporation recently celebrated the company's founding and 115 years of continuous manufacturing in Clarinda, Iowa in 2018. The privately owned company is led today by third, fourth, fifth and sixth generation family members.
C.A. Lisle started the company in 1903 with the first product being horse-powered water well drilling machines. To combat the seasonality of the well drilling business, the young company branched out and also manufactured washing machines, cream separators, and push-type reel lawn mowers.
Product Description
A stout tool to remove and install plastic fuel tank lock rings from 4 inches to 7-1/4 inches without damage. Channel design on body allows the legs to adjust to fit a wide range of applications and keeps the drive centered. Works on the new smaller GM serrated rings and traditional rings. The design is compact so the tool is not left hanging over the work area with the potential for hitting other components. Also works on some Subaru plastic rings.

Caution: Usually the fuel tank around the location of the fuel pump will have a rubber like coating on it to prevent anything causing a spark. I would suggest not wearing any nylon clothing or shoes that could create a static spark situation. Usually when removing the fuel tank lid, you have removed the rear seat and are in the car directly over the tank. Disconnect the battery also. Once the lid is off, fumes and raw gas are exposed. A simple spark could prove to be catastrophic. Also, it is highly suggested you NOT perform this procedure within your garage. Do so with all doors open and in the open air, this to allow clean air flow and circulation to allow gas fumes to exit the vehicle. And have a Fire Extinguisher close by, or better yet, have someone standing near by with a extinguisher at the ready just in case. Do Not take this procedure lightly, it is probably one of the most potentially dangerous maintenance functions you'll ever perform.

Otherwise it is very sturdy and adjustable, probably works great on most other vehicles.
I ended up ordering Toyota part 77144-04010 from Amazon and taking a hack saw blade at an angle and cutting the ring enough to pop it open with a screwdriver at about the 1 'o clock point if you look down on it. It unwrapped and about the 3-4 'o clock position revealed the problem: a piece of thread in the old ring had broken loose and jammed in the threads there. There was no way that ring would turn.
I have no way of knowing if it would have worked on a non broken ring, but it seemed OK otherwise.
I did pull the wing nuts and put on regular nuts as I had to try lots of torque, but it did not turn.
Getting the ring back on was also more difficult than I thought it would be since the fuel module on my tank is spring-loaded and the nylon threads can flex without fully engaging. This tool can be tightened on one side, then loosened on the other, allowing a nice way to move the ring by hand (using just the tool), while applying pressure at the part of the ring that has not yet engaged the threads.

The solid construction of this lock ring tool came in handy because the tank lock was really on tight
