Haven Kindle Edition
Rain Ryland has never belonged anywhere. He's used to people judging him for his rough background, his intimidating size, and now, his orphan status. He's always been on the outside, looking in, and he's fine with that. Until he moves to New Wurzburg and meets Friederike Burkhart.
Freddie isn't like normal teen girls, though. And someone wants her dead for it. Freddie warns he'd better stay far away if he wants to stay alive, but Rain's never been good at running from trouble. For the first time, Rain has something worth fighting for, worth living for. Worth dying for.

About the author
Mary Lindsey is a multi award-winning, RITA® nominated author of romance for adults and teens. Her books Shattered Souls and Fragile Spirits have been selected for the 2017 Spirit of Texas Reading Program.
Mary lives on an island in the middle of a river. Seriously, she does. When not writing, she wrangles her rowdy pack of three teens, two Cairn Terriers, and one husband. Inexplicably, her favorite animal is the giant anteater and at one point, she had over 200 "pet" Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches. The roaches are a long story involving three science-crazed kids and a soft spot for rescue animals. The good news is, the "pet" roaches found a home... somewhere else.
She loves to connect with readers and can be found at marylindsey.com and on Twitter at @MaryL_MarissaC

- Reviewed in Canada on December 4, 2017I really enjoyed that this book took its time with revealing everything. While I did find it a little slow, it does build nicely by giving you bits and pieces at a time when it came to the true nature of the town and Freddie. I had a lot of fun trying to put everything together before the big reveal. It's been a long time since I read a novel where I didn't know the paranormal twist so I enjoyed that.
I wish there was a little more action though. It was a lot of talking at times with vague conversations because no one wants to let Rain in despite his best efforts. But in the meantime, I enjoyed him building his relationship with his Aunt and him trying to uncover the various mysteries of the town.
I also found it refreshing that Rain (the male lead) is the one left in the dark. Lots of paranormal reads have the male lead as the intriguingly mysterious interest and it's the everyday, regular girl who finds herself thrown into this new paranormal world. But here, Rain is your everyday person and Friederike is the mystery. It's a nice spin on what seems to be the "classic" YA paranormal approach.
However, the romance was definitely a weak point for me. While I loved the passion between these two it was a little too "unexplained" connection (almost insta-love) for me. It's a shame in a way because I liked how Rain and Freddie worked as partners and balanced each other out as the story progressed.
In the end, I really enjoyed how this book came together. It took its time to get there and it was a little overwhelming at times but I was definitely entertained. It has a lot of the features I love about YA paranormal and so it reminded me why I enjoy this genre when it's all said and done.
**I received an ARC of this book and this is my voluntary review.**

HAVEN is both a haven and a hell, filled with chilling secrets and too many mysteries drenched in blood. Teeming with werewolves and witches straining against each other and amongst themselves in a never-ending turf war, one long-forgotten stranger arrives just in time to become the answer for some and the bone for others.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is like Twilight and Grimm rolled together.
Verified PurchaseI absolutely LOVED Love Me to Death by Marissa Clarke. I’ve been waiting for the next book in the Underveil series for three years now. So when I heard Marissa’s alter ego Mary Lindsey had a paranormal book coming out, I couldn’t wait to read it. Admittedly, when I found out the book was a YA/NA story there was a moment of pause. I hardly ever read New Adult and I definitely don’t read Young Adult. But honestly, once I started reading, none of that mattered.
I went into reading Haven having read the blurb. I still had no idea what the story was about. From the beginning, the story had me intrigued and that intrigue continued as the mystery kept getting deeper and deeper.
Seventeen-year-old Aaron “Rain” Ryland arrives in New Wurzburg, a small town in Texas Hill Country, after his mother dies in a Houston area shelter. He’s surprised that his mother had a sister that he knew nothing about and is even more surprised at the things he discovers about his family. Friederike “Freddie” Burkhart isn’t your typical seventeen-year-old girl. She was conceived, born, and raised to be a leader. Freddie and Rain establish a friendship and that friendship grows to be so much more. But there are those who don’t want her to lead and view Rain’s presence as a threat. Soon, Rain and Freddie find themselves in a race against time to figure out who’s trying to kill them and stop Freddie from fulfilling her destiny.
First and foremost, I LOVED the characters of Rain and Freddie. They’re simply amazing. They’re strong characters on their own and even stronger and better together. Both believe in doing what’s right, no matter what it might cost them. Both are strong-willed and refuse to back down. I loved that there was a huge mystery/suspense element to this story. The secondary characters definitely help in keeping you guessing as to what was happening.
For me, Haven was all about trying to figure out what was going on in the town of New Wurzburg and who you could and couldn’t trust. For that reason, I’m not going to get into all the details. Haven was an addictive read. It’s like Twilight and Grimm rolled together. While there is conspiracy and murder, this story is so much more. Haven is about family, friendship, young love, and believing in yourself. Ultimately, it’s about finding out where you belong and where your safe haven is.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Fun Take on Werewolves!
Verified PurchaseSomewhere over the years, I became fascinated with werewolf books! Don’t get me wrong, my first love will always be vampires, but I love a good werewolf book as well! I had heard exceptional things about Mary Lindsey’s Haven, so I knew it would be one I had to read for its sheer awesomeness!
Rain Ryland moves in with his aunt after his mother died, leaving him an orphan. He’s had a tough go of things his whole life practically, living in a shelter, living on the streets…so when he moves in with his aunt, he really was expecting much of anything to happen for the remaining months until he turns eighteen. But New Wurzburg, the quiet little town that is now home, is about to become a whole lot more interesting when he collides with Friederike Burkhart.
Freddie isn’t like normal girls, in fact, she’s so far removed from normal, it’s what draws Rain to her in the first place. There’s an air of mystery surrounding Freddie though as you may have already guessed it, Freddie’s secret is that she’s a werewolf, and they are plenty of them in town! What was unexpected was the inclusion of witches known as Weavers. In fact, there’s a very detailed history between the Weavers and the werewolves, also known as Watchers. The Watchers basically act as protectors for the Weavers when they are “weaving” their magic. Weaving magic leaves them vulnerable, so the Watchers, watch out for them.
Freddie is slated to be alpha as her late father was the alpha of the pack before his untimely murder. Freddie hasn’t been the same since it happened and since his aunt just happens to work at the sheriff’s office, Rain is determined to find out what happened. He’s not going all out on trying to solve the murder, but he’s doing everything possible to find a lead or something that might have been overlooked by the police who have written it up as an accidental death.
This was a rather different take on the werewolf love story! Or really, any paranormal love story, for time and again, I am so used to seeing the male paranormal type and the human female type falling in love and overcoming obstacles! Truly, (in regards of YA) I think the last time I read a book where the girl was the werewolf falling in love with a human boy was Blood and Chocolate, which is still one of my all-time favorite reads! So Mary’s book was like a breath of fresh air in that area!
The mystery behind Freddie’s dad’s murder was intriguing, as were the politics at play concerning the Watchers and Weavers. There is definitely a lot to be learned here and I think it was somewhere in the middle of trying to learn about the Watcher/Weaver relationship that things got a little muddy. It was hard to truly grasp the reasons behind the adversity. I think that’s where my biggest problem laid, if I can’t really get an idea of their past relationship, understanding the present time one isn’t going to happen without difficulties. Though I was able to get the general idea of it all, so I wasn’t totally lost within the story.
The romance between Rain and Freddie wasn’t what you expect either and I loved that! Yes, when boy meets girl, we expect them to fall in love and have so many problems they’d have to overcome to be together. But here, Rain will learn his first hurdle will actually be to get Freddie to like him! It’s not necessarily a love-hate relationship, but Freddie has been known to keep her guard up and it’s clear that she tries to protect Rain from her world…another trope we often see in these paranormal/human relationships. Their relationship was pretty intense though in some ways and I honestly couldn’t get enough of these two.
The ending was pretty shocking! There was more at play than a simple murder mystery and the results were earth shattering! I wasn’t expecting for several things to happen, at least not in the first book, as there is a second one planned! Whether that one will be a direct sequel or more of a companion has yet to be revealed. I almost want to root for a companion sort of sequel because I felt very content with where Mary left things. It was very complete and settled with the knowledge that a future remains…for some that is! Mary definitely put a whole new spin on werewolves for me and I must say I quite enjoyed it and cannot wait for more! I am already looking into her backlist!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow
Verified PurchaseThis book was an accidental glitch purchase, but man! Am I so glad it happened. I didn't read the description and just dove right in. I guessed the "plot twist", and my internal 16 year old was thrilled about it. I love the fierce girl power in this book, and that fact that it's not a poorly done insta love story. I think it took some of the basic generic plot points of this YA genre and twisted it to actually work. No one is all-powerful without effort, the ride or die to a fault is believable given the dark off the streets life. No one professed their love the day after they met. A+, 10/10

3.0 out of 5 stars Twilight nostalgia but with better writing
Verified PurchaseThis was good. It hot that Twilight nostalgia with werewolves- human gets drawn my paranormal creature and wants in. Better writing made it and characters made it fresh. Lost a few stars with a few writing style choices - some inner dialogue becoming a little repetitive for example- but all around was a good book.

5.0 out of 5 stars AMAZING with a capital A!!
Verified PurchaseThis book was sooo good! I recommend it to anyone who loves a good romance/mystical thriller. I’m not a huge bookworm and so I’m very picky about the books I read. When it comes to this book, I enjoyed every second of it and I couldn’t put it down! I also never write reviews but I couldn’t help myself with this one.
