I decided I'd spend the extra $$ and get the pro version this time. So far I'm impressed, it operates the same as the 1600 but is much more robust. The only down side is that its about twice the weight, so not as easy to carry around, but time will tell how the 1800 will hold up compared to the 1600. I anticipate it will give at least twice the service time as the 1600's based off of its better construction and heavier weight (I'm hoping heavier = heavier duty components therefor longer lasting).
I'd recommend someone using this type of ladder daily to go with the 1800 pro instead of trying to save money going with the lighter version because it should give you more service time in the long run.
For your average home owner, go with the 1600...still a very useful ladder, but not meant for daily use.
Only trouble is that the new one does not lock out easily on steps 3-5 from the top.
I have requested a replacement from Amazon and it has been set up for replacement.
Not all telescoping ladders are equal. This is the third one I own and it is definitely the most robust. The OSHA compliant Type IA rating certainly makes this ladder a different kind of beast. It shows it's designed for daily, commercial use. The tubes move smoothly as they telescope. The steps are significantly wider than those on other models that are engineered for consumer use, the tubular telescoping posts are a larger diameter, and the locking mechanism is entirely different from the others. There is but one release on the bottom of the second step that controls all the steps, not one on each step like some other telescoping ladders. What is unique to this design is an indicator on each step that goes from red to green when the step is engaged and locked in, providing added confidence that the ladder is ready for use. I look forward to using this ladder as I work on the roof of my RV's and my rental properties.
I will provide a fuller review once I have used this ladder at least six times..
