I originally bought it in 2017. It does not feel great out of the box -- it's slippery, hard, and dribbles a bit like wood. Nobody wanted to play our pick up games with it because they are so used to those soft, grippy, nice feeling basketballs.
It took MONTHS to break it in. That's both a pro and a con. That's a lot of dedication you need to break in a basketball, but it rewards you in two important ways: the fact that it takes so long to break in is just a sign of how long this basketball is going to last you, and it was so slippery in that break in period that my handles actually improved.
After it's broken in, the basketball feels great. You can continue using it indoors and it just feels better and better. It's noticeably softer to play with now, and you actually get a lot more grip. Unfortunately I'll have to buy a new one and start over because my niece and nephew started taking this to play outdoors. Fun times.
This ball is authentic, nice grip, great feel to the ball, bounces perfect and amazon shipped inflated in the original Spalding packaging.
I got the newest version of the ball where there's the @NBA to the left of the logo.
Would recommend anyone who loves the game of basketball to give this one a shot at least once in your balling career!
Longer Version:
A little side-note first, I'm a long time Amazon customer since 2005 but this would be my first review ever because how happy I am with the product!)
Okay, Here goes! This is by far the best basketball that I've ever purchased...
I've been playing basketball for 13 year...during that period of time, I've owned more than 10 basketball just to name a few Spalding's TF-1000, neve-flat, zi/o, infusion...Molten's GM7 and a couple of Wilsons...
This ball has the nicest grip to it straight-out-of-the-box....not to mention all the reviews on how it gets even better after 3~6 month of proper break-in.
It is a little unfair to put the real deal against the ones that I've listed above, but if you are just like me, a person who never ever even have the thought of dropping $100+ on a basketball crossed your mind, do yourself a favor and pick this thing up.
I bought it because of the love I have for basketball and I believe that everyone who love basketball as much as I do should at least spoil themselves a little bit for once and pick up this genuine leather basketball. There's a reason why these are the official game ball of the NBA, lets show some respect to the creator of this awesome product and to the game itself.
*You know you have done something right when you crack a huge smile on your face the second you place your hand on one of these!
This ball out of the box shoots like a dream. Something about how this ball releases when you shoot it makes any shooter just smile. The ball lends itself to finesse shots with good rotation. By the way, I usually play a 3 or 4 position, but shoot pretty consistently outside the arc. There are little to no imperfections in the ball so dribbling is a dream too. The ball just goes where you bounce it.
It does take some breaking in. Right now, I play about 2-3 hours a day, 6 days a week and the ball isn't totally broken in yet after 1.5 months, BUT it keeps getting better every time I play with it. If you are used to the Wilson Evolution or the TF-1000, this ball may not be for you because the composites just have a crazy amount of grip (which leads to a lot of amateur ballers to carry so pick your poison). People don't call that stuff in pick up games anyways, BUT there is a reason why NBA players hate composite balls. I find the composite balls also don't dribble consistently because they have so much cushion to get that grip that they bounce too soft for a strong drive.
If you are used to playing with street balls or outdoor ball and can still handle/dribble a ball even when the ball is slightly slick, then you might like this ball right out of the box. The ball is slick at first but break it in and it plays like a dream. Composite get super slippery with the sweat on your hand, but leather balls get even grippier.

I received both balls packed individually in plain boxes, not in the retail packaging. The quality is immediately evident once you pick one up. Out of the box, the rich pebbled Horween leather feels stiff and somewhat slick. I can see why some people say that it feels ‘fake’. The genuine leather panels are cut beautifully and the deep channels have a nice reassuring feel. This is definitely a shooter’s ball. When you dribble there’s a solid thunk instead of the ping of lesser balls. A lengthy break-in period is necessary to develop the buttery feel and character of a true NBA game ball. I’m looking forward to taking them to the gym to give them a real workout. Simply put there’s nothing like a Spalding NBA game ball. If it’s good enough for the pros, then it’s probably good enough for you. Get one while you can!
