HE PEBBLED PATH by Sarah M. Eden: Deep in the heart of a mysterious forest, Gretel trades her freedom to save her beloved father from the spell of an evil enchantress. Even attempting to escape would cost her father his life. Gretel’s determination to fulfill her promise wavers when she meets Hansel, a young man who captures her heart. For, she loves him too dearly to put his life in danger, and he loves her too much to simply leave her to her fate.
BLACK FERN by Julie Daines: Rós is desperate to find work in order to care for her ailing father and younger sisters. She applies to the mysterious owner of a crumbling castle and is soon swept up in dark secrets. Unsure if the owner of the castle is man or beast, Rós determines to help him at all cost. She soon discovers that the cost may be too great, even for her.
SCARLET by Heather B. Moore: When Scarlet needs to fetch a healing tonic on the night when the wolves are at their most dangerous, she has no choice but to apply to her nemesis, August, for help. He agrees to help her, but they encounter a pack of wolves that put up a fierce fight, marking Scarlet as their newly targeted prey.
SO RARE A POWER by Annette Lyon: Stella knows she’s taking a risk each time she meets Patrick in the rose garden that they’ve cultivated together. About the authors
Julie Wright (1972-still breathing) was born in Salt Lake City, Utah. She's lived in LA, Boston, and the literal middle of nowhere (don't ask). She wrote her first book when she was fifteen. Since then, she's written twenty-three novels and coauthored three. Julie is a two-time winner of the Whitney award for best romance with her books "Cross My Heart" and "Lies Jane Austen Told Me." The America Library Association listed “Glass Slippers, Ever After, and Me” in their 2020 top ten best romances and "A Captain for Caroline Gray" in their 2021 top ten best romances. Her book "Death Thieves" was a Whitney finalist.
She has one husband, five kids, two grandbabies, one dog, and a varying amount of houseplants (depending on attrition).
She loves writing, reading, traveling, hiking, playing with her kids, and watching her husband make dinner.
She used to speak fluent Swedish, but now speaks only well enough to cuss out her children in public.
She hates mayonnaise.
Annette Lyon is a USA Today Bestselling author. She's won a Whitney Award (2010) and is a 10-time recipient of Utah's Best of State medal for fiction and short stories. She's the author of more than a dozen novels, even more novellas, a cookbook, a grammar guide, and some 120+ articles. She's worked as a professional editor for publishers and bestselling authors and graduated cum laude from BYU with a degree in English. JUST ONE MORE is her first suspense novel. She is represented by Jill Marsal at the Marsal Lyon Literary Agency.
Heather B. Moore is a USA Today bestselling author of more than ninety publications. Heather writes primarily historical and #herstory fiction about the humanity and heroism of the everyday person. Publishing in a breadth of genres, Heather dives into the hearts and souls of her characters, meshing her love of research with her love of storytelling.
Her ancient era historicals and thrillers are written under pen name H.B. Moore. She writes historical women's fiction, romance and inspirational non-fiction under Heather B. Moore, and . . . speculative fiction under Jane Redd. This can all be confusing, so her kids just call her Mom. Heather attended Cairo American College in Egypt and the Anglican School of Jerusalem in Israel. Despite failing her high school AP English exam, Heather persevered and earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Brigham Young University in something other than English.

Julie Daines is an award-winning and best-selling author. She was born in Concord, Massachusetts, and was raised in Utah. She spent eighteen months living in London, where she studied and fell in love with English literature, sticky toffee pudding, and the mysterious guy who ran the kebab store around the corner.
She loves reading, writing, and watching movies—anything that transports her to another world. She picks Captain Wentworth over Mr. Darcy, firmly believes in second breakfast, and never leaves home without her vervain.
It's all about the books. Friends, family, school, "real jobs", they were just obstacles to be tackled so that I could return to my true love: books. All I have ever wanted in this world is to read and write books. My criteria for choosing a purse is that it must be able to fit a paperback book inside. I took books on my honeymoon, and bought more while we were there. I picked my major because it looked like I would get to read a lot of books, and also I thought it would provide me with interesting background information for my own books (which it did), so I now have a BA in Humanities -Comparative Literature with a minor in Scandinavian Studies. From the time I was twelve on up, I told people that I wanted to be a writer. When they said, "So, you'll teach and then maybe try to write a book?" I would just shake my head. No, I was a writer, and that was all I wanted to do. Over the years I have lived in Idaho, New Jersey, Delaware, and now Utah, because it doesn't matter. I can read and write anywhere. I've worked at a wedding invitation factory (Bet you didn't know they made them in big scary factories, did you?), at a video store (back at the birth of DVD), at libraries and bookstores, and even been an office lady at a school while I waited to get published. I knew that I would be published eventually, because . . . well, I just had to be.
Now, don't get me wrong, I have other interests. I took eight years of German, four of Norwegian, and even studied Old Norse so that I could read the great Viking sagas in the original language. I knit like a maniac: hats, scarves, sweaters, dog sweaters, socks, felted purses, you name it. I play the piano and viola, love to travel and to watch movies. I have a husband and three kids and a dog . . .
But mostly, it's about the books.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 6, 2017This review is for two of the novellas:
Julie Daines' "Black Fern":
My favorite of this collection, "Fern" is a Beauty and the Beast retelling. I have to admit to being disappointed in Disney's adaptation this year, since Beast is my favorite fairy tale. Belle was not who she should be--smart, compassionate, and kind. Instead, she was aloof and a bit unlikeable.
Therefore, I was looking forward to reading something closer to the true heart of the Beast story. Rós did not disappoint. She is brave, smart and kind--a true Belle. When faced with her family's starvation, she gathers her courage and knocks on the door of the most terrifying (and richest) home in town. Instead of being repulsed by the hideous resident, she wonders how long it has been since he has spoken with someone or felt the sunlight. She spends hours talking to him, cooking for him, helping in any way she can. Rós is not cowed by his temper either, and shows kindness in return.
With a highly original twist involving myths and legends I hadn't even heard of, this is not your average fairy tale retelling. And once again, it's my favorite Daines' story yet!
Eden's THE PEBBLED PATH:
Eden is a seasoned, smooth, original author. She always delivers a story I haven't heard before and this was no exception. Gretel sacrifices a life of servitude to a witch in exchange for her father's life. Hansel is a wood worker who stumbles upon Gretel in the woods and is intrigued by the mystery of Gretel's constant disappearances and her demanding mistress. With an ending both twisted and super awesome, I loved this story. Not one to miss.
Highly recommended.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 25, 2019I love short stories and this is a very sweet collection, with new stories woven into ancient tales of fear and wonder.
I especially liked “Mail-order Princess” by Jessica Day George, “The Pebbled Path” by Sarah M. Eden, and “Black Fern” by Julie Daines. Each writer brought her own magic to her story, with unexpected events and finely crafted, strong heroines — who are every bit as courageous and loyal as the men they come to love.
If you're not already a fan of these talented authors, you're likely to discover a new favorite.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 19, 2022Wow! I absolutely loved each story in this happily ever after collection. I loved how the stories focused on a different fairy tale and had their own happy ending. I added a new author Jessica Day George to my TBR books pile and was completely engrossed from the beginning to the end.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 7, 2018Mail-Order Princess by Jessica Day George - nice take on The Wild Swans fairy tale. The story was cute, but may be a little too sweet. I liked that the love interest was mixed race and not the reach guy the princes was meant to marry. I wish the romance was a bit more developed and I have to admit I wasn’t entirely convinced about Wild West setting. 3.5 stars
The Miller's Daughter by Julie Wright – was boring and entirely non-convincing. The retelling brought nothing to the story, except tearing the magic down. Isa was horrible main character – she did nothing, was capable of nothing and just let the circumstances and other people dictate the paths and turns of her life. At least the princes in the original story was wise enough to outsmart the demon and the king. In this one, she played the part of Damsel in Distress, and the whole plan was by the love interest. Him – I hated for the way he treated Isa. He was so dominating and patronizing, and the thing he did to her in the end – deciding to act without even talking to her before… like she doesn’t deserve to be taken seriously. 2 stars.
The Pebbled Path by Sarah M. Eden – was the one of the stories I liked. I really enjoyed the way Eden changed the tale. I loved Hansel and Gretel as love interests. Contrary to the previous story, they both were true partners to each other. Everything they did – they did together with mutual trust and respect. In addition, I liked the magic, which was if not unique – intriguing enough. 4.5 stars.
Scarlet by Heather B. Moore – was a nice story with lovable mail character, grumpy brooding love interest, nice enemies-to-lovers trope and a much darker mood. I didn’t really get how the story can be counted as Red Riding Hood retelling, but it was enjoyable on its own. 4 stars.
So Rare a Power by Annette Lyon – was a pure agony to read. It was so bad I can’t find one good thing to say about it. The story has nothing to do with retelling, except renaming main characters (the purpose of which I cannot comprehend) and stripping the story of every interesting aspect. In overall, it felt like middle school book report of tell-in-your-own-words kind. 1 star. (the lowest rating I gave a story/book in 4 years)
Black Fern by Julie Daines – was as awesome as any other story by Daines I read before. The Beauty and the Beast is my most favorite Fairy Tale and this one was one of the best retelings I read. Like all the other stories by Julie Daines it was heartening, charming, magical and yet absolutely realistic and very very human. I loved Ros and Branan, their romance was lovely and very believable. I loved the addition of Wild Hunt mythology to the story as well. But the most I liked that in the end there were no transformation on Branan side. His scars didn’t go away, what chained was his heart and hers. For turning into pretty prince always feels like cheating. 5.5 stars.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 27, 2021If you enjoy fairy tales but you're bored with the stories you grew up with, try these. New, creative retellings of some old favorites, each one short enough to read in one sitting. Find a comfy chair, snuggle in, but don't allow yourself to get too wrapped up, lest you become one of the stories yourself.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 6, 2022I thoroughly enjoyed reading each one of these stories. They all were so well-written, creative & engaging. If you enjoy reading fairytale retellings and reimaginings, then I think you will love this book. Highly recommended!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 6, 2022What a fun collection of six fairy tales all with a new twist. Short interesting reads by some of our favorite authors.
