Since got all the harnesses from Metra, I initially purchased a Metra Axxess ASWC-1 in order to keep the Steering Wheel Controls (SWC). After initial installation everything worked just fine except the SWC. After expending more than 12 hours triple checking connections, hardwiring with solder, a few hours in the phone with technical support, and even a replacement unit, the ASWC-1 unit simply didn't work on my car.
While troubleshooting the issue I found an article indicating that even though Metra states that their device works with Subarus 2016 and older, there are documented issues between their device and all the Subarus with a StarLink module (believe most Subarus 2016 and older have a StarLink module).
So I decided to give a try to the Maestro. Oh boy, what a difference. Not only worked perfectly and I was able to retain all my steering wheel controls, but also the setup process was a lot user friendly. You just need to pre-setup the device in a computer before installation (for your particular car and stereo system) and make sure to connect the cables correctly. Online instructions and setup process are a lot better and more user friendly than the ones for the first device that I tried.
Not sure if this applies for other brands and models, but based on my personal experience, the Maestro seems to be a more developed device, both hardware and software wise.
Once I got over that hurdle, the programming was extremely easy. Just input your year, make, model, and trim of your vehicle, and the correct programming is queued for download. Their website even confirms by showing you an actual picture of your steering wheel so you have confidence knowing that you've made the right selections and the programming is specific to your situation. A subsequent quick flash of the device, and you are good to go. It even provide a color printout guiding you with which wires attach to the appropriate spots in your specific car.
Everything went off without a hitch for me and it worked right when I fired up the car for the first time.
This unit is Impossible to program, and I consider myself a techie, how come a company today is still tied to Windows/IExplorer/English base OS? OMG I did throw away my money. Please save yourself a lot of issues and go with whatever other option for steering wheel adapter you can find in the market it can be worse than this.
