Overdose (Dr Peabody Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 2 ratings

Camilla, a kindhearted but not entirely competent young doctor, is training to become a psychiatrist. Having fallen under the spell of an enigmatic senior colleague, she is struggling to combine the demands of her job with pursuit of their illicit affair. After one of the patients in her therapy group takes a fatal overdose, Camilla gets involved in a tragicomic series of misadventures. With elements of satire, mystery and romance, Overdose has been described as giving a "gripping but shocking" picture of the dark side of psychiatric practice in 1980s England. Set in the forgotten world of a mental asylum, its medical background is largely authentic, but the plot and characters are fictional and not intended to be taken too seriously.

After publishing several medical books, I have returned to my childhood passion for writing fiction. Originally from England, I qualified as a doctor from the University of Oxford in 1970, and spent 30 years working in clinical and research posts. From 1991-2000 I was consultant in psychological medicine, with special interests in oncology and palliative care, at the Churchill Hospital in Oxford. After my husband and I moved to New Zealand in 2000 I decided not to resume an orthodox medical career but, having done some training in natural therapies, practised as a Bach flower practitioner and life coach for ten years. I also developed interests in choral singing and animal welfare. My novels reflect these interests as well as my medical background. The latest one "You Yet Shall Die", set in southern England, is a story about family relationships and the uncovering of a long-ago crime.

Camilla is in the wrong profession; far too immature to be a therapist of any kind, attempting to assist others with their problems. She has enough of her own - and no self-awareness, little self-worth and a totally misguided view of where the moral line should be drawn. Which, of course, makes her an intriguing, if unlikeable character. Her infatuation with the good-looking but cad of the highest order, Dr Alvin Musselwhite leads her to make many disastrous decisions in her private life that have a flow-on effect on her medical practice. The insight Barraclough gives us into psychiatry as it was (hopefully) - the influence of drug companies, the improper use of certain interventions, the very thin line between patient and doctor - along with a clear, relevant explanation of certain procedures and medications, all contribute to making this quite an intriguing story.
    The ending was a surprise - and I see there's a sequel!

Powerful evocation of psychiatric practice 30-40 years ago, parts of which are truly shocking. Story that carries you along - I did not want to put it down til I knew what had happened. Great read with serious thought-provoking aspects and a character to hate with a clear conscience.
