One Last Risk: A Small-Town Romance (Family Ties Series Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 1,153 ratings

* * * A SEXY small-town contemporary romance * * *

A guilt-driven firefighter, a widowed mother, neither is ready for love, but love has other plans.

Firefighter Lucas Bennett had the carefree life he’d always wanted until a deadly blaze took the life of his company mate and best friend. Blaming himself was easy but pulling himself from the tailspin of guilt proved to be much harder. The fog of sadness and guilt pushed him down a dangerous path until he nearly died fighting the beast. Forced to stop and reevaluate his life, he decided to make a change before it was too late.

A fire took almost everything from Sarah Robinson—her husband and her home—leaving her to raise their precious daughter alone. Everywhere she looked held memories of her husband, pouring salt on her ever-present wound. Unable to live any longer around the memories of her husband, she and her daughter moved to Oak Grove, far away from the grief of the past. All Sarah needed was the chance to start a new life for her and her daughter.

A car accident on a dark, rainy night put Lucas and Sarah on a collision course neither of them expected… with questions they’re not ready to answer. Can a single mother open her broken heart for a second chance at love? Will a broken firefighter risk his heart for what might be his only chance at forever? Are each of them willing to take one last risk to be together? His risk. Her reward. Together, they’ll mend each other's broken hearts.

If you like small-town romance where the heroes are sexy and the women are strong, unlock One Last Risk to start your visit to Oak Grove, Pennsylvania and fall in love with Lucas and Sarah!

I received an ARC of this book and this is my voluntary review.
This is a heartfelt and touching story that I enjoyed very much.

Lucas is a firefighter who feels guilty after the death of his best friend and fellow firefighter who died in a fire 18 months earlier. He starts taking risks and putting his live and the lives of other firefighters in danger. He is suspended for 60 days and now has to work as an EMT.

Sarah is a widow and single parent who moved to Oak Grove to get away from the memories of her husband. When she meets Lucas, they are attracted to each other. A week later she is in an accident and Lucas is the paramedic who helps her out of the car and stays with her at the hospital that night. A relationship develops between them. Lucas does not tell her that he is actually a firefighter because he doesn't want to scare her off. As their relationship develops into a physical one and he falls in love with her, it becomes even harder for him to tell her. She, however, also keeps something from him.

What I loved about the story is that the two of them got along so well almost from the start. Lily was also very sweet and she loved Lucas and he her.

This is a touching story that I highly recommend.

This author is new to me and I mostly enjoyed the book. I like low angst, good family and friends, and kids so it was all there. I’m not a fan of the miscommunication or secret trope, both were here. I’m not an author but miscommunication tropes just feel ridiculous. I could see it in a book about teenagers but I’m reading about adults.

    What a beautiful story.
Lucas grew up in Oak Grove along with his two brotherhood and one sister. Lucas was raised in a family that was taught to help others, so it felt very natural for him to become a firefighter and paramedic.
Sarah lost her her husband two years ago in a house fire and has brought her four year old daughter to Oak Grove to start a new life.
Sarah and Lucas both have things from their past that they need to overcome. Sarah needs to overcome the guilt of wanting to start over after she looses her husband and Lucas needs to get overcome the guilt of feeling like it was his fault that his best friend and fellow firefighter died in a fire.
There is a HEA but not before there are a lot of tears
This is a wonderful story and very well written.

The plot of this story can be summed up as “Good communication could have solved everything on page 2!” Michael and Maggie are friends with benefits—except they don’t even seem to be friends honestly just hook up buddies. But when he suddenly moves back to Oak Grove without telling her he’s surprised to find out she’s pregnant with his child.

Honestly most of the story feels more like wrapping up plots from some of the other (better) stories. Even the author mixes up the FMC’s name on the final page saying “I hope you enjoyed Michael and Brittany’s story…” the FMC’s name is Maggie.

I have to admit that at times I thought this was a little sappy but it didn't deter me from finishing the book.

The author captivates the reader with her prose and detail.

I would definitely recommend this book to anyone looking for a good read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good...
Reviewed in Canada on November 15, 2019
This was a quick story told by both of the main characters’ points of views. There seemed to be some details missing, though. For example, we only find out a little info about Sarah’s job when the book was at about 50%, & even then, not much is mentioned. I realize the focus is more on Lucas & his job (because he’s having lots of feelings of guilt for the death of his good friend), but still, some info is missing here.

They seemed to be getting along fine, but at one point the chemistry just wasn’t believable... When Sarah was grieving for how her daughter seemed to have forgotten her father, there was lots of tears, & within minutes there was a bedroom scene... It just didn’t ring true.

As for Lucas, he had plenty of time (& warnings from others) to be honest about his job to Sarah, yet he just doesn’t do it. He is reinstated in his job & still, no discussion with Sarah. He takes away her choice & her ability to see their relationship in full honesty, really... At least he finally realizes was he’s done, though. It’s after the fact, but better late than never...

Sarah and her daughter move to a new town to escape the memories of the husband she lost in a fire. Lucas is suspended from firefighting as he is taking too many risks. They fall hard but secrets come between them.
