Product Description

Product Description

On a stretch of highway just outside the most magical place on earth, six-year-old Moonee and her ragtag band of playmates spend an unforgettable summer at The Magic Castle, a budget motel managed by Bobby (in a career-best performance by Willem Dafoe). Bobby's stern exterior hides a deep reservoir of kindness and compassion as he watches over the kids' adventures, protecting them from some of the harsher realities of life.

Incredible performance by all adult and children actors. Such an original, beautiful film. I was scared the movie was going to come to an end it was soo good, and was in tears towards the end of the movie. Sean Baker is such an amazing director.

Many people are going to be outraged by this film, but there is no denying its guts or its integrity. There is no point in this film which insults the intelligence of the audience. The way the scenes take place you have to figure out what is transpiring on your own. One example is when Moonee is taking a bath and the voice of a man enters the bathroom saying with complete surprise, "You didn't tell me a kid was in here?" Without any explanation being made, you realize Moonee's mother was with a John, and the John went to use the john.

It would be easy to point a finger at various characters in this film and call them scum, or to blame them for their horrible behavior. The principle complaint being: Being poor is not an excuse for being disgusting. But this film does not make such judgement on these characters. It does not excuse or explain their behavior. It leaves all such matters up to the viewer. For an hour and fifty minutes, you are going to have to deal with them whether you like them or not and though this may not be pretty or even enjoyable, one thing it isn't is false. Everybody in this film seems like they can really exist. Using your own experience from what you know about the underbelly of American society wouldn't a child in Moonee's shoes behave like a monster? The conclusion is how could they not?

As for child exploitation, or the argument that the young actress Brooklynn Prince who played Moonee was in some way harmed, I say imagine this. Which one of us at the age of six had our future paved out for us with such stark clarity. Right now she is the star - lead character of one of the most popular shows on TV in Home Before Dark. In essence, she already knows what she is going to be in life; heck, she is doing it right now. I would wager too, she had the time of her life on the set of The Florida Project. Just because you are playing a child who disrespects adults does not mean this is what she is in life. It's called acting. It's called playing a character. And for a six-year-old kid, it must have been exciting as hell to make a film, especially when they are one of the principle leads. Having their career path laid out for them, and now, making millions, Brooklynn Prince is probably bursting with self confidence, and to this I can only say, we should all be so exploited.

Lastly, the ending was fantastic. Despite what it might mean, or not mean, or anything else you may like or hate about it, it sticks right in your head. The way the music builds for the first time in the entire film, left me with a rush.
As for being outraged by this, I say, why aren't you outraged by the constant flux of action movies which treat the audience like they are dumb as posts, while presenting us with the most basic cardboard characters. Here, every actor had a role which must have been a dream to play. The performances by all the children, William DaFoe, Bria Vinaite, Mela Murder, etc. rank as some of the best of their careers. And it's all because Sean Baker and Chris Bergoch never once let their feet of the peddle when it came to realness.

For those with the guts to stand it, this is a fantastic film.

This is a serious, tough movie, very unusual in its subject matter, depicting the life of a marginalized portion of our population living in straitened circumstances in a motel converted to residential housing for people just scraping by. Amazing performances by a number of child actors and adults who are not professional actors, along with Willem Dafoe, who does a sensational job as the handyman/factotum who keeps the place going, and looks after the people, as best he can.

Without giving anything of the plot away, I would say that a number of the commercial reviews of the movie are utterly misleading, making it sound like a "magical childhood" feature, and it is anything but that. The kids in the movie are often left to fend for themselves in ways that are scary or actually dangerous and have been exposed to things that you would hope no child would have to see.

I think this is an excellent but very serious movie, and you should just be ready for some stuff that is hard to see, but it is probably important to be aware of, like the circumstances in which these people live their lives. It is definitely not a "feel good" movie.

This is a most original film in so many ways. Almost all of the actors were unprofessional first-timers in the film industry, at least one even found through instagram. A major exception to this is the Oscar-award-nominated performance of William Dafoe, who will break your heart with his portrayal of a good, empathetic man trying his best to live with a decent set of values, but who has been dealt a cruddy deal in life, working hard to maintain peace and order in a dysfunctional setting.
It is also a story of struggle, particularly of the outcasts of society, among which is a woman desperate for money who does her best to survive amidst her problems and faults, and who truly loves her daughter.
And it's about her child Moonee and Moonee's friends, and the magical world which children can create, oblivious to the sadness of their lot. A field of cows becomes a safari. Imagination is the key.
And the masterful weaving together of all these threads in a "housing project" in Florida near Disneyworld, where everything is town is painted pastel and built in kitsch architecture, is a triumph of the director Sean Baker. Bravo!

Amazing performances by very young children in an interesting film depicting the resourcefulness of little kids with parents with questionable child-rearing abilities in difficult circumstances. Willem Dafoe also turns in an excellent portrayal of a tough but compassionate adult.

within days of receiving this video I had watched it at least 6 times. Now that a month has passed I'm up to 10. I can't think of a single movie in which the kids come across as so deeply real and natural. The acting is marvelous across the board. You forget that you're even watching a movie. You just feel like you're an invisible tenant of the motel with a front row seat on the drama of life. it unfolds gently and slowly which might frustrate those who wish for more action and a very clear story arc, but if you are the type who loved Nebraska then you will also love this film.

It's a great movie, but boy did it make me sad. Any A24 film is a fan favorite, so if you're into their movies, check this one out too!
