USE: It's great for modifying exercises as well as helping yourself engage certain muscles the brain might not automatically engage (such as your inner thighs in a supine spinal side twist!) Used it a few times and already noticed I started to engage those muscles automatically thereafter! For the more experienced/fit, it is also great for increasing the difficulty of various moves.
QUALITY: Just as described and exactly like those you find in any pilates studio. It is sturdy, high quality and an overall great purchase.
NOTES: This ball is meant to be a little less than fully inflated. It is also smaller than a basketball, but larger than a softball.
Doing Barre at home requires a ballet barre (substitute with furniture), an exercise mat (you can buy anywhere) and an exercise ball. This ball is exactly the same as what we use in Barre class. It's used for all sorts of leg, seat and ab exercises. It also takes the pressure of the lower back during ab work, which means you can do more exercises without experiencing lower back pain.
The ball is easy to inflate and deflate, perfect for travelling. I just store the deflated ball and the straw used to inflate it in a ziplock bag, throw it in the bag, and I can do Barre wherever I am (store the videos to your phone or tablet).
My favorite exercise with it so far is double ball abdominal lift/crunch.
* Laying on my back and tighten your abdominal muscles and I squeeze the 9" inch ball with my knees, while holding the larger exercise balls with my feet.
* Then I raise the ball off the floor. To protect my lower back, I pull my bellybutton in toward my spine.
* Then I squeeze the ball between my knees for one deep breath.
* Return I return to the start position and repeat.
This exercise really gives a good burn!
In addition to the exercises I get at the PT office, I found additional information by googling for 'fit ball' exercises. The ones with video are almost as good as going to the physical therapy office as you see the correct way to do the exercises. For example, Mayo clinic has a nice set.
