Sanity: a Novel (The Intelligence Trilogy Book 1) Kindle Edition
Have you ever felt like you didn't quite fit in, that the people around you are concerned with petty things, that they're actors in a play that doesn't quite make sense?
Cal Adler does, until a mysterious new guidance counselor at his high school tells him exactly how he feels, and that he has friends he's never met. One day a woman strikes up a conversation on the college quad. And the real adventure begins.

Review
[O]ne of the fastest-paced books I've ever read. Chapters are seldom more than a few pages long, and every one skips to a new time or location with something significant happening in all of them. Even the slower chapters, with the protagonist, Cal Adler, camping out in the desert or just having a conversation with someone take on a narrative significance in part because of the contrast with the frenetic pace of the rest of the book. - Richard Carroll, Thermidor Mag
If this is a taste of the future of the espionage genre, you can pour me another glass any time. Jon Mollison, Castalia House

- Reviewed in the United States on December 18, 2023Cal Adler, a brilliant Stanford engineering grad with a hard-boiled Dashiell Hammett-like presence that exudes adventure, dames, whiskey, and danger, serves as the protagonist in Sanity (The Intelligence Trilogy Book 1). This gripping novel of ideas unfolds through non-chronological chapters, spanning the past, present, and future.
Recruited into the secretive Church of ReHumanism (ReHume) during high school, Cal's journey takes unexpected turns as he navigates academia, politics, and covert operations. The novel masterfully blends political intrigue with the author's firsthand knowledge of Washington, DC's corrupt machinations. The plot is enriched with humor, especially evident in the quirky recruitment attempts by attractive female ReHume operatives. The author skillfully portrays sex and violence in a manner that’s not exploitative—the mark of a true writer.
ReHume’s manifesto, evoking the spirit of Philip K. Dick, injects a thought-provoking layer into the narrative. Lamenting the degradation of modern life, the manifesto delineates ReHume's mission to 'ReHumanize' a segment of humanity capable of restoring humanity's innate spirit of adventurous inquiry and physically courageous exploration.
Each chapter is marked with specific dates, presenting a seemingly random yet artfully coherent brainteaser. The interlocking timelines include pivotal incidents in which Cal confronts terrorists, showcasing his mental alertness and physical prowess. As Cal progresses through different life stages, layers of the plot unfold, revealing connections to ReHume and deep state operations, culminating in a compelling missing-person case. Cal's strategic decision to collaborate with ReHume on a new mission while forswearing formal membership is an intriguing cliffhanger resolution.
Sanity conveys echoes of speculative fiction with a core of noirish realism. There are no sci-fi gadgets or gimmicks, just the world as it is. Neovictorian weaves these elements into an engaging narrative that lingers in the mind, leaving readers eager for the next trilogy installment.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 2, 2021As I rule I’m not a huge fan of “chosen one” stories. This isn’t that, exactly, but it’s got a family resemblance. Despite that, I thoroughly enjoyed it.
It’s got a very cool non-linear structure and some stream of consciousness prose that allows the reader to feel deeply “embedded” in the protagonist’s perspective without interfering with the gradual disclosure (the “twists”) of the narrative.
At the end my reaction was a bit “what the hell did I just read?!?” But in a good way!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 5, 2022That the American Empire is in decline is not a question in this story. (Perhaps it has already fallen and we’re just waiting for the dust to settle.) The threats to America are from within and without, though they remain deliciously murky in this offering (and perhaps so in reality). The solution to its salvation seems to be a mysterious cabal that has been recruiting Übermensch since 1945 or thereabouts. Behind them lies a shadowy and elitist Scientology-esque “church.” This novel straddles both the sci-fi and espionage genres.
Cal Adler, the protagonist, is a complex character, indeed often at odds with himself; and at death of his best friend, disappears into the desert to find his purpose in life and in society. He is also in a nontraditional way deeply spiritual. His path however is complicated. Starting as a genius engineer, he enters the world of backroom of politics and flirts the workings of government intelligence. By the end of his journey he has become vigilante covert-operative seeking vengeance; and then turns his new-found skills into a service for hire, and a means to right the wrongs of the world.
The story is told out of time, jumping from the present to the past, and sometimes the future. It’s easily to follow though. And it’s well written with some stream-of-consciousness passages, competent dialogue and very satisfying descriptive action sequences.
The novel decidedly comes from the right, politically speaking: reactionary conservatism— though not without clear thinking and salient observations. There are echoes of Ayn Rand here, as well as classic sci-fi from the mid-twentieth century: Heinlein to Hubbard, and even Robert Silverberg’s ‘The Stochastic Man.’
I enjoyed this book and I recommend it.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 21, 2023A fantastic read that features psychological intrigue, the decline (?) of America, secret organizations, and the coldest martinis known to man. With the unique chronology, you’re not just reading a well crafted story, but assembling a mental jigsaw puzzle all at once. Keep that wonderful table of contents handy to keep tabs on the various pieces. Really well done and looking forward to the next two in the trilogy.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 31, 2020Much like the main character who discovers he's not alone in the way he sees & operates in the world, it's nice to know there's an author in the world who share s the same sense of commitment to taking responsibility and building the best life possible.
The narrative is straightforward even though the story is non-linear. The action is clear, easy to follow, and perfectly paced.
Overall good read and I'm really looking forward to picking up the next one.
The only drawback is I can't keep track of which was written first, so I kept picking up book two.

5.0 out of 5 stars The clear pill from Alaska
A secret society dedicated to a kind of A=A metaphysics and the straight line of action. Highly entertaining, with some stinging truths along the way. Five stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well written, I wish it was true.
It reminds me a little of the Grey Spear society books which I also enjoyed reading. I hope there is a sequel in the works. Much recommended if you like wheels within wheels or have moved in intellectual circles similar to the author.
