Product Description

With his provocative feature debut, twenty-six-year-old Steven Soderbergh trained his focus on the complexities of human intimacy and deception in the modern age. Housewife Ann (Andie MacDowell) feels distant from her lawyer husband, John (Peter Gallagher), who is sleeping with her sister (Laura San Giacomo). When John’s old friend Graham (a magnetic, Cannes-award-winning James Spader) comes to town, Ann is drawn to the soft-spoken outsider, eventually uncovering his startling private obsession: videotaping women as they confess their deepest desires. A piercingly intelligent and flawlessly performed chamber piece, in which the video camera becomes a charged metaphor for the characters’ isolation, the Palme d’Or–winning sex, lies, and videotape changed the landscape of American film, helping pave the way for the thriving independent scene of the 1990s.

2018 Criterion Collection Blu-Ray
5 Stars
2018 Criterion Collection Blu-Ray
A few years before filmmakers such as Quentin Tarantino and Kevin Smith would "revolutionize" the world of independent cinema in the early 90s, Steven Soderbergh and crew made Sex, Lies, and Videotape that did just that.It is a powerful film that showcases just what you can do with little money if you have the right talents behind the project.Soderbergh is a master craftsman. The movie touches on infidelity issues, prudence, love, lust, infatuation and the basic, human condition. It's a film that truly speaks for itself. If you are a living, breathing human being, you will get a lot out of this movie. This new Criterion Collection Blu-Ray is amazing. The restoration on the transfer is top tier. This movie looks gorgeous. Also includes a good amount of supplemental features, such as a "making of" filmed in 2018 with Andie MacDowell, Peter Gallagher, and Laura San Giacomo, an amazing interview with composer Cliff Martinez and sound editor Larry Blake where he breaks down the difficulty of getting a good sound mix, with comparisons to different releases of the movie over the years. The sound in this Criterion release is beautiful and apparently Soderbergh was finally happy with it and requested all previous mixes be thrown out.If you love this movie, you NEED this version. It really is the absolute best it's ever looked or sounded.I can't even imagine them being able to do better than this.Blu-Ray includes a slimline, digipak inner with clear slipcase and a booklet. It really is worth the bit of extra money. If you haven't seen this movie, you definitely need to!And this is the perfect release to experience this landmark film.
