- Reviewed in the United States on November 9, 2014An excellent action/adventure book that wastes little time presenting the foundation of its plot and maintains a similarly styled storyline throughout the duration of the book. What I liked most is that the author didn't try to take the reader 20 different ways in an attempt to convey an intricately complex plot. Sometimes simple is a good thing with regard to a storyline and can actually convey depth in that simplicity. Although I am one that often enjoys books of the opposite nature (See any book written by Tom Clancy or W.E.B. Griffin), it's been my experience that very few authors can pull it off effectively. Kudos to Mr. Stephenson opting not do so and presenting instead an enjoyable, easily understood action/adventure plot, with enough thrills to satisfy a reader not looking for an adrenaline rush.
Although "Wanted" is the first book in the series, the interactions between the main characters were presented in such a manner that I actually felt as though I understood the underlying dynamics that provided the foundation of each relationship. In other words, the author did a fantastic job of welcoming readers to the beginning of an ongoing series in such a way as to instantly project a familiarity and connection with the characters that normally takes at least a second book to accomplish. In fact, I connected around the third or fourth chapter. I am an avid reader so I know accomplishing this takes an enormous amount of skill.
The only negative remark I could give is that I think the author should have expounded more in depth, the interactions/relationship between Mary and Leopold. The way each expresses the underlying sexual tension/angst that is obviously present is downright hilarious; exacerbated by the intellectual wit they both use to try and deflect it. In addition, I thought the author should have found a way to increase the presence of Mary as he did an incredible job of presenting a female protagonist who is as well rounded of a female character as I have seen. Tough, smart, sexy...and as much as she would probably hate to admit...very feminine. However, this being the first book in a series, I'm not even sure what I just wrote can even qualify as a complaint.
Great, enjoyable read.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 6, 2015I am a huge fan of mysteries and thrillers and I'm pleased to say that this was a pretty enjoyable read.
The plot was fast paced and full of suspense but lacked originality. I found myself spotting similarities to other mystery books that I've read which, on some level, disappointed me. However, the plot was engaging and did keep me interested through the entirety of the book.
The multiple points of view, although a tad confusing at first, converged nicely towards the end of the book and did help move the plot when there seemed to be a momentary pause in Blake's chase.
Blake himself, although intelligent and witty, lacked vulnerability until the very end, making him seem somewhat unrealistic at times. I also didn't like that he didn't seem to worry much for his friends who may have been injured, missing, etc.
However, his interactions and relationship with other characters (i.e. Sophie and Mary) were well developed. While Mary seemed more like a sibling to Blake rather than a potential love interest, her conversations with Blake exposed a lot about her character as well as Blake's.
Overall, the plot was fast-paced and engaging though a bit unoriginal, and the characters were well rounded. This book kept me at the edge of my seat and I would recommend this to anyone who wants a thrilling race for answers and a satisfying resolution.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 15, 2015This is an enjoyable story for escape reading. I would imagine it as a great TV story series such as "Miss Marple" or "Murder she Wrote"
I read this book in a day and a half because there were no glaring errors and it didn't use large words I had to research. There was quite a bit of action that strained the imagination. The story was consistent but not boring. I don't know much about the French police system so I will have to take it on faith.
Lots of characters coming and going. The main ones to focus on 1- Leopold Blake 2- Mary Jordan and 3- Jerome ( just Jerome). Leopold reminds me of Sherlock Holmes' sidekick Dr Watson ( only younger). He makes decisions that don't always seem logical. Of course he doesn't have Holmes to bail him out and so has to rely on Mary Jordan ( NYPD) and Jerome (his bodyguard)
The story can stand alone but the ending raises questions that will only be answered in a later story. Time will tell whether I want to go that route.

An excellent novel, at first it was hard to get the string of the chapters since they don't seem really related, but as I continued, I just couldn't stop reading. I would recomend it to whoever likes to be on the edge when reading a book.
