Product Description
From the Manufacturer
The "zero clearance" concept is simple: The blade cuts its own perfectly sized slot by being raised through a machinable "blank" insert. Leecraft inserts are 1/2-inch-thick, high-density phenolic laminate, with bonded-melamine surface. They offer superior rigidity, flatness, durability, and low friction. User-friendly features include top-accessible leveling screws, lateral adjustment screws for a vibration-free fit, rear anti-lift pin (except JT-1), and a precut-blade bottom pocket that provides clearance for fully retracted blades and bevel cuts. Instructions included. Use carbide-tipped blades only. Fits Craftsman (Sears). Size: 14 by 3-3/4 inches.

I researched inserts and decided to try a zero clearance insert made by Leecraft. I measured the stock red metal insert and it turned out to be slightly less than 14” long by 3.75” wide. Based on these measurements I ordered the CR-1.
It arrived and I was immediately impressed by its weight and how rigid it was. The material this insert is made of is IDEAL for this application. My insert’s color is black with a beige surface laminated on the top and bottom. I have no problem at all with the color. I read the included directions twice and went out to the garage to see if the CR-1 fit my table saw. I first made sure my table saw blade was at a perfect 90 degree angle. I lowered the saw blade completely and using a 3/32” hex wrench, I backed out the four hex headed alignment set screws of the CR-1 insert until they were flush with the underside of the insert. I attempted to insert the insert but something near the tab end of the insert was blocking the insert form seating. After several minutes of close examination I realized what the problem was. The blade opening has four recessed platforms (two near the front side of the table and two near the back side of the table) that the four hex headed alignment set screws rest on. I realized that the two recessed platforms near the back side of the table were a little two wide to let the insert drop into position. I inserted a simple straight bit in my router and set the depth of the router to match the recess on the bottom of the CR-1 insert. Then using my router I removed about 1/8” of material near the set screws on the tab end of the CR-1 insert. I removed only a very minor amount of material. I tried inserting the insert again and it fit. It was a tight fit but it fit. The reason the fit was so tight was due to the overall length and width of the insert. In my opinion, I really like the tight fit. Then using the four hex headed alignment set screws, I adjusted the insert until it was perfectly flush with the surface of the table saw. I then verified that the table saw blade was not making contact with the underside of the insert. I clamped a large piece of wood across the top of the table saw to hold the insert in place. I made sure the clamped piece of wood was not directly above the blade of the table saw. I then turned the saw on and very slowly raised the blade of the table saw to its full height and then I returned it to its lowest position. I raised and lowered the blade several times.
After I removed all the sawdust, I ripped about twelve small pieces of scrap wood. Every cut was perfect! There were no saw marks or burning on any of the cuts! I love this insert. It has made my table saw a precision cutting tool. I wish I bought this years ago!
I uploaded several picture of my CR-1 insert showing where and how much material I remove with my router.

The Good:
Fits my saw very well. Great adjustment to get co planar with table top. Clever design for adjustment to make length and width a tight, perfect fit.
Eliminates the very real danger inherent in the overly wide clearance on the original insert plate when working with thin cuts or small parts. Very much worth the cost (or time to make one yourself if you'd rather go that route). One way or the other this is a mandatory upgrade IMO. Wish I had done this immediately.
The so-so
Even with the blade fully cranked as low as it could go, the blade kept the insert from seating in the slot. Not wanting to risk using power to cut enough clearance, I just turned the pulley by hand with very light pressure to get to the point where the blade would spin freely with the insert fully seated before using the power to cut through. Used some 600 grit with light finger pressure to deburr the slot just enough that wood with a sharp edge would not catch when sliding flat on the surface. But don't deburr too much; you do not want to widen the slot or chamfer the edge.
On the same day i made my own insert out of some scrap 1/2 birch plywood for my dado set. Took about an hour. Not as pretty. Worked as well but takes a little precision and a tenon fixture to get the lip thickness just right and some sanding for tight length and width fitting.
Either way works out great, just down to personal preference, skill, and the right fixtures. Just get it done one way or the other for both safety and cleaner cuts.
