As parents respond to their imperfections with kindness, children will learn to treat themselves with compassion too! Being a parent is challenging, no matter what age your children are. Parenting with compassion is a way to treat ourselves with gentleness as we struggle with the demands of parenting. Licensed marriage and family therapist Kim Fredrickson comes alongside you as an imperfect mom and counselor to help you parent with compassion. Not only for your children, but for yourself too! When we exercise self-compassion, we: • have more love and compassion to give • don’t waste precious energy beating ourselves up • correct mistakes and repair hurts with our children • learn what we don’t know and find solutions Children also need to learn how to be compassionate with themselves. They are constantly learning new things through trial and error, which involves lots of failure. When kids practice self-compassion, they become more resilient, feel better about themselves, and have a greater ability to handle life’s problems.

Review

"Kim Fredrickson's new parenting book is a compilation of some of themost effective parent training materials I have ever been exposed to. Ihave had the privilege of sitting in her classes and teaching alongsideher. You will find the material and advice to be practical, based onsound research, and easy to understand. Parents regularly comment thatKim's teaching frees them to experience child care in a more positiveand meaningful light."
~ Kenneth Logan, PsyD, Psychologist and Professor of Counselor Education, Western Seminary, Portland

"Kim's wise advice helped me learn how to validate a teen's opinion even when I disagreed with him or her. I learned to move from teaching teens tocoaching them. These skills and others helped me to foster truerelationships with my own children and now enhance my relationships with them as adults. In fact, the concepts are so valuable, I use these same skills to inform my counseling practice."
~ Carol Karkazis, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, Roseville, CA

"Kim shares practical advice that is simple, makes sense, and issome-thing you can do. Her motto regarding parenting is 'It's all aboutthe relation-ship,' and she offers guidance to develop a compassionaterelationship with your kids. Her principles are in line with raisingresponsible and respectful children."
~ Betty Koons, Teacher and Mom

I’m so thankful for all of the nuggets, the freedom I’ve obtained, the challenges & the education I’ve received from this book! I’ve learned that I truly do not show myself enough compassion & in turn lack that with my children! I’m working on it!This season has been one of the very hardest in my life. Both physically, emotionally & spiritually. I feel like I’m trying to understand God & the purpose of prayer....and trauma. So, opening the book tonight & reading this page, brought me to tears. This book has challenged me to be better for myself & my family!

I am so grateful for this immensely helpful resource for parents. I have been a Marriage and Family therapist for 30 years and have taught parents and parenting classes my entire career. Give Your Kids a Break is the book that has been missing. Kim wisely addresses what others do not- the game-changing impact of self-compassion on our capacity to positively parent our children. When we fail to live up to our own standards as parents (which is inevitable) we tend to be very hard on ourselves. When we’re hard on ourselves we’re especially hard on our kids. With wisdom and grace, Kim, helps us learn how we can be compassionate toward ourselves which directly impacts our capacity to be empathetic and compassionate to our kids.

Other books tell us what to do with our children. This book helps us learn how to be with our children. Kim offers clear guidelines as to how to be a “coach, encourager, and challenger” and develop that strong emotional relationship with our child that is more impactful than any parenting techniques. I cannot recommend it more highly.

Kim's book is teaching me how my own compassion toward myself is essential for a healthy life for my children that begins with my own journey as a healthy parent. Kim speaks compassion into the pain we feel when we realize our limitations as human beings.

“Self-compassion is a crucial practice for parents. If we continually give to others without nurturing ourselves, our emotional gas tank will be stuck on empty. By nurturing and supporting ourselves, we will have more emotional resources to give to our children. By forgiving ourselves for the inevitable mistakes we make as parents—remembering we’re only human and doing the best we can—we won’t waste precious energy beating ourselves up. Instead, we can learn from our mistakes and focus on the joy and meaning found in raising our little (or big) ones.” (2017, Fredrickson)

This is one of the most helpful parenting books I have ever read. Kim’s book provides clear guidance within the context of the challenges of parenting in today’s world. She is real about the realities of being too busy, tired, overwhelmed by social media, and so many other pressures parents experience. This book is filled with practical tools for parents that desire healthy relationships with our children in the hopes they will grow into healthy resilient adults.

Give Your Kids a Break shares the much-needed concept of how parents can raise their children with compassion, teach their children to have compassion, and it offers a healthy dose of compassion for the parents along the way too.

I love that the author, Kim Fredrickson, shows us Jesus’ example as the basis for this in Matthew 9:36, “When [Jesus] saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless....” Isn’t that how we parents often feel as we try to parent as well?

Kim goes on to say, “Notice what it says and doesn’t say. It shows that Jesus saw that they were harassed and helpless, with no one to help. He responded with compassion and sought to meet their need. This verse doesn’t say that Jesus was mad at them or blamed them for the mess they were in. No, He responded with compassion and help. What a wonderful model for us.”

Frederickso has written another remarkable book here that every child will hope their parents will read.

    Highly recommend, 5 stars.

Kim Fredrickson has done it again! Her first book, “Give Yourself a Break, Turning Your Inner Critic into A Compassionate Friend,” became an invaluable tool for me to learn the ways of self-compassion and kindness. This second book teaches more about growing in self- compassion, but also instructs the reader on ways to help their children do the same. Do you need encouragement? (Who doesn’t?) Are you short on time? (Who isn’t?) Add this book to your must-reads and then make time to read it! The stories Kim shares and her insights, gained from her thirty-plus years as a counselor and her personal experiences as a mother, will help you feel normal, less inadequate, more human and less alone! The book is easy-to-read and includes many practical ways to get started. “We’re in this together. We are all a mess. We love our kids, and we are doing the best we can…”
