Just remember that when using any mic with a mobile device, unplug it when you playback your file. Why? Because you plugged your mic into the audio jack, of course. Most apps will assume you've plugged in a headset or other type of speaker, so the apps send sound through the jack and not to the main speaker. Please don't panic and assume your mic malfunctioned (some reviewers appear to have done just that). If you really want to keep your mic plugged in during playback, you can change your settings to always use the main speaker (very easy to do on most phones/tablets, but I still find it simpler to unplug the mic).
The little clip is strong, and the mic stays on securely. The chord is much longer than I'll ever need, which is fine by me. I've never fully unraveled it, and never will. Nor will I ever run into a problem with it being too short. Bottom line, I feel I can rely on this mic to do the job, whatever I'm doing.
One last thing. When buying electronics it's really important to understand that the manufacturing costs depend very heavily on what % of the devices are lemons. You can sometimes find the exact same product coming off the same assembly line under different brand names and the only difference is that the cheap brands are more likely to be faulty (eg. maybe 3-5% of the cheap ones are duds, while the expensive brands only allow <0.1% failure rate). Even so, most of the cheap ones will work just as well as the high-priced brands. For simple electronics like this, I usually choose a low-cost one and take my chances. I would never take that chance with a complex device like a phone because too many things can go wrong. But with a mic? Sure! I took a chance and I would do so again. I always check reviews first though, and make sure I see some glowing reviews. I want to know that if the product works, it's going to work well. The last thing I want is a device that is poorly designed, and there are plenty of those out there too so be careful.
For me, this little mic is a good example of an inexpensive product at a price low enough for me to easily take the risk. Do be honest with yourself though. If you get a dud, would you be really upset? Would you bother trying to get a refund? Maybe you wouldn't bother, but you're willing to risk the cash anyway. Just be honest with yourself. And if you're feeling unlucky, don't buy cheap electronics!
Audio has always been a challenge. I remember purchasing a shot-gun microphone as an easy, multi-purpose microphone that I can use to do events and shoots solo, planting everything on the camera setup itself. For interviews, however, it wasn't very helpful. Lapel microphones are expensive, especially wireless, are expensive. Even the wired ones come with their own challenges. I needed something to fit in a 3.5mm jack, and work out of the box.
The day I found this BOYA mic, I haven't looked back.
For $25, this purchase was a no-brainer. It gave me the opportunity to record clear audio for a fraction of the cost of an expensive lapel setup.
=====
PROS:
=====
1. You get the benefits of an omni directional microphone for a fraction of the cost.
2. The direct plugin via 3.5mm jack means that you can plug-and-play with your DSLR without any issues.
3. The metal design of this product is truly fantastic. It makes it feel sturdy and solid, and something that improves your confidence as it hands on a subject as they are talking.
4. Wired lapel brings one big issue: the wire. If you have a short wire, you are pretty much in trouble to optimize how you want to shoot the video. This microphone comes with a large wire that allows you to give ample space between the camera and the subject, while also taking advantage of the direct connection to the camera.
5. The 3.5mm to 6.35mm connector is a nice addition to the kit.
=====
CONS:
=====
1. The LR44 battery with the microphone is honestly useless. I would purchase a replacement equivalent silver oxide battery instead (SR44) to give better performance than the included alkaline.
2. The foam covering on the microphone is nice, but a deadcat style attachment would have been nice for use during windy days.
3. This does connect directly to the camera, so it will add the audio directly to your video footage. If you want the flexibility of optimizing your audio, you may have to extend your setup with a mixer and other tools.
4. There is no battery life indicator. ALWAYS do a sound test, because you don't want to end up with video with no audio. I would also replace the battery after about 10-15 uses (15-20 min conversations), depending on how long you keep it on and all.
5. For use with a DSLR, you need to turn it "on" with the battery power. If you forget to do this, you will have no audio. There is no indicator for this, so keep it in mind.
Even with the cons I mentioned above, this microphone is a staple for any interview videography setup. For $25, you cannot go wrong with this. Please do keep in mind that this is not meant for anything other than conversation shoots, as it would be useless to gather sound from like pan shots, environmental shots, and such. You are better off with a shotgun microphone for those.
Defenitely recommend for the price.
I've used this on both a Samsung Smartphone and a Canon EOS M6, both without issue. Note that if you do use it with a camera such as the Canon, you'll need an LR44 battery (which comes with it), and you'll need to remember to switch it to camera mode.

Its main purpose was to get better sound recording while filming (Sony zv1) out in the hills.
Although the microphone on the Sony is excellent I was hoping to cut down on the sound of the breeze/wind.
I have used the microphone on two separate walks in the lakes and have been impressed so far.
As with most products there are some personal little niggles, which might not bother other users.
1. The cable is extremely long which is great if your using it in a studio setting. But out and about you need good cable management.
2. The microphone comes with a foam wind cover which comes off easily and makes the item look cheap. Buy the ‘dead cat covers’.
3. The cable has a 3.5mm jack that plugs directly into your device. However, it requires a power source. This comes in the way of a small LR44 battery. That sits in a housing that also has an on/off switch. You need to remember to not only switch the microphone on but also off. As being left on drains the battery very quickly.
4. While on the subject of the battery. It’s replacement is quite fiddly.
5. The sound quality is excellent and you may have to play around with your microphone placement. It picked up my breathing while attached to my collar. This maybe just to do with adjusting the camera settings.
Overall, As a novice user I am happy with the purchase and its performance.
