The Most Complete Starter Kit with High Quality Components and Tutorial
Quantity and quality are both important here in Elegoo MEGA starter kit. The most essential parts in this kit are MEGA controller board and expansion board, which is a perfect clone with excellent product finish Compatible with Arduino projects. Besides, we offer other over 60 kinds of components and sensors from small parts like LED diodes, resistors and potentiometer to big parts like LCD1602, RFID module and 830 tie-points breadboard, which meet your demands for your different projects either it is simple or complex.
Sturdy quality is definitely the most important thing to Elegoo even with so many components provided we never compromised on the quality. Pins and wires on some of the parts like LCD16502 and motors have been pre-soldered which is very convenient and saves your time.
LCD1602 Display module
LCD1602 module is a display that has an LED backlight and can display two rows with up to 16 characters on each row. You can see the rectangles for each character on the display and the pixels that make up each character. The display is just white on blue and is intended for showing text.
Lining up the display with the top of the breadboard helps to identify its pins without too much counting, especially if the breadboard has its rows numbered with row 1 as the top row of the board. Do not forget, the long yellow lead that links the slider of the pot to pin 3 of the display. The 'pot' is used to control the contrast of the display.
DC Motors and L293D Transistor
In this project you will learn how to control a small DC motor using a Mega board and a L293D transistor, which is a very useful chip. It can actually control two motors independently. We are just using half the chip in this lesson, most of the pins on the right hand side of the chip are for controlling a second motor.
L293D is quadruple high-current half-H drivers and designed to provide bidirectional drive currents of up to 1 A at voltages from 4.5 V to 36 V. The L293D is also designed to provide bidirectional drive currents of up to 600-mA at voltages from 4.5 V to 36 V and drive inductive loads such as relays, solenoids, dc and bipolar stepping motors, as well as other high-current/high-voltage loads in positive-supply applications.
74HC595 Shift Register and LEDs
74HC595 is a Serial to Parallel Converter which has eight outputs (perfect) and three inputs that you use to feed data into it a bit at a time. This chip makes it a little slower to drive the LEDs (you can only change the LEDs about 500,000 times a second instead of 8,000,000 a second) but it's still really fast, way faster than humans can detect, so it's worth it!
74HC595 shift register is a type of chip that holds what can be thought of as eight memory locations, each of which can either be a 1 or a 0. To set each of these values on or off, we feed in the data using the 'Data' and 'Clock' pins of the chip.

But I know nothing about Arduinos other than they exist. UNTIL NOW.
I just finished Lesson 5, Digital Inputs. The PDF instructions explain what is going on and warn you that in this particular section things seem a bit backwards, a good thing to make you aware of so you can learn. Each lesson is brief with excellent pictures and diagrams and just enough explanation. Follow and HAVE FUN.
The kit already contains a lot of what I will need to build my project someday: Arduino and power supply; LCD display; motors; motor controllers; buttons; LEDs and other electronic bits; remote controller and sensor. I will need to add thermocouples and the associated interfaces, and the information for those is available everywhere on the 'net. I may also add Bluetooth and WiFi, using BLYNK to create an app for the phone...someday.
The kit comes neatly packed in a nice plastic container with a bunch of compartments. You get your development environment from the 'net, and the included CD contains all the code you'll need, which is EASY to upload to the Arduino. There are breadboards to let you lay out your parts, do the lessons, and experiment. You do not need to solder. You just need a PC with a USB port, and you install the development environment there and plug the board in. The Arduino already has a program loaded and running to blink an LED, and you will modify that program by changing a number, then you'll upload it and see the results. That is how easy this is to get going.
Additional parts are easy to get and relatively inexpensive, and when your project is all designed, you can get boards where you can solder everything permanently. I have a long way to go to get to that point. This kit, though, has been a wonderful learning experience so far.
About the only things I found with the kit, which are MINOR:
- It is tough to discern the colors on the resisters. This isn't the fault of Elegoo. I suggest getting a stand with a magnifying glass and light. Note that the tape from which the resisters come is labeled, so you can just go by that.
- I needed a longer USB cable than what was included. I had one on hand. Again, not Elegoo's issue, as they supplied a USB cable in the kit. Plug and play.
Overall: Lots o' stuff in a fun kit with great instructions!
Note: I do have some basic familiarity with electronic components and programming. Having these basic skills does help, but I think a beginner can follow along. Just take your time to follow the pictures, and take even more time to understand the programming examples (the "sketches"), which are short and fairly clear. And HAVE FUN.

It not only guides my son through the basics of programming and electronics but also encourages him to experiment and create his own projects. The step-by-step instructions are clear and concise, fostering a sense of accomplishment with each completed task.

I have programmed extensions for a lot of the exercises, and have kept myself out of mischief for months!
Über die Funktionen der einzelnen Teile kann ich derzeit (noch) nichts sagen, das wird sicher noch das Wochenende warten müßen, obwohl es in den Fingern juckt, denn der Spieltrieb ist geweckt.
Daher bisher: 5 Sterne + ich würde auch mehr vergeben, denn das hier sieht nicht nach ganz billigem China-Sch**ß, wie einige Leute die Teile nennen, aus, hier hat sich jemand ganz sicher Gedanken gemacht. Betreffend der Funktionalität werde ich eine Update verfassen. (und dann sehen, was dieser Lieferant noch so zu bieten hat!)

Nachtrag: Kaffeepause beendet: IDE und Anderes wie Libaries geladen, läuft bis hier her wunderbar. Und übrigens: ich nutze ein crystal case vom Wettbewerb, aber zum Einen paßt das board exakt und zum Anderen ist von Außen, nicht nur von Oben jeder Pin gelabelt und auf jedem Steckerboard steht, wofür es steht: z.B. Power, analog In ...etc, Alles wunderbar von der Seite zu lesen. Wirklich erstaunlich.
Yes, in fact, it has so many things that it gave me many project ideas with Arduino. It contains a good PDF with tutorials showing how to connect each parts/tools to the main chip (Arduino) and introducing the projects (codes) available on the CD. All of the content is avaible in many languages and fairly up to date (2016). I have intermediate knowledge in electronics and I mainly just play around with all the tools, but I took the time to check the lessons and the guide explains the basics for the tools used in each of them. This means it would be a decent purchase or gift for a teenager or a person with less knowledge in the field (or even none).
Last of all, I had a concern with one piece in the kit. It was working but had a small defect. I made a video with my webcam showing the small defect and shared it in an email (address provided in the kit). Elegoo responded promptly and decided to send me a free replacement because they could see that it was not normal. I am a very satisfied customer and would not hesitate to contact them again for any other concern. They even pointed out a wiring error in a picture I've sent them and fixed my rookie problem.
